TRONDAH  A lot of ports are indeed broken in Snow Leopard, but this cannot be blamed on MacPorts. A lot of changes has been made under the hood in Snow Leopard, and a lot of GNU software needs to be patched or updated in order to build under this environment.

JIMBLU  that's a really great question. on the dock icon i do not put a check next to "keep in dock" but it still shows on restart. and when i remove it from Login Items, well then the app doesn't start up at all. i can't figure out the answer but i'm sure the developer will fix it soon. i can tell the developer has been busy making many UI changes. but how hard can it be to make an application icon not show up in the dock? -- it's done all the time. i'm sure there's some third-party app the could do it-- but i would just wait til the developer gets around to it.

i get the feeling this latest incarnation of atMonitor opened a whole new can of worms.

atMonitor is a full application, which uses UI (ie, TopWindow) that make it impossible to be implemented as background only application. Background only applications have very limited access to UI.

atMonitor is a replacement for "Activity Monitor" and as such will remain a full application.

However, if there is enough interest, we can create "atMonitor lite" with less features (no TopWindow, no FloatingWindow, etc.) but with menubar display and no DockIcon.

Playback
Aug 18 2009

TRONDAH  SAP1, what are you trying to accomplish? Playback is a really good alternative. Ok, so you don't need Growl support. Turn it off. You don't want bandwidth management. Don't use it. In my experience, Playback is a lot more stable and performs better than MediaLink which I've used before. The developers are also extremely helpful both here, on the forums and on mail. The price is for _three_ licenses. That right there is reason to switch. If you don't feel like it adds any value to you, nobody is forcing you to abandon what you already use.

The only reason I can see for your bickering is because you are the developer of an alternative and don't like the competition.

This subject matter is highly personal, be we agree that iStat looks lovely. It takes a while to get used to atMonitor look, but once you do, you will appreciate the higher info to space ratio that atMonitor uses (it is a developer tool) and you might even start to wonder why you ever put up with the beautiful but wasteful and "fluffy" look of iStat before.

Privoxy

TRONDAH  Nowhere does it say that Privoxy will not run or compile on OSX. Like I said, it runs fine.

Here's the steps to install it:

1. Install MacPorts

2. Run 'sudo port install privoxy' in a terminal.

I agree that it might not belong on MU though as nobody is providing a packaged installer for it, but just because they ain't supporting OSX anymore doesn't mean it doesn't work. OSX is UNIX and POSIX compliant, it's pretty much guaranteed to work the same way as in BSD or Linux.

TRONDAH  SciFi: simple request? In your previous post you sound like you are being forced to use this software, and it's really easy for the devs to add tiger support.

In reality, we are all lucky to have those few devs working hours and hours in their _spare_ time to get us XBMC for OSX. They do not have the resources to do a tiger port, for sure. No bug report will fix that.

That's why I suggest talk to the main developer, he is actually very responsive to requests and a really nice guy.
