Calico
May 14 2006
*****

TONYGOULDING  As a beginner just starting with panoramic images, quick successes mean everything in terms of keeping momentum and not losing interest.

After researching the many panorama creation workflows, tools, and applications available, I was about to lose that momentum...then I came across a reference to Calico on the Panoguide forums.

I downloaded the demo, hit LOAD to import 10 images, hit ALIGN, and within a couple of minutes had a stiched panorama. Hitting MAKE and a few minutes later I had a QTVR image I could navigate.

Very impressive. Of course, I might evolve to something more 'pro' at a later stage, but the key point (esp for the beginner) is the simplicity and the excellent results. This has boosted my interest and helped me maintain momentum...I'm on a roll now.

Very impressed.

TONYGOULDING  In my enthusiasm, I commented incorrectly.

Calico does NOT generate QTVR; just the JPG panoramic image.

QTVR requires other tools such as CubicConverter.

I stand by my original ratings, however, based on what Calico is designed to do.

MACUPDATE ADMIN  It appears that the developer is switching his service provider (the server to host his site and files).

I know that the developer's site was accessible, as was the download, just a very few days ago.

Likely the developer will resurface soon.

TONYGOULDING  Running on a 2GHz iMac G5 with 10.4.5. No problems whatsoever.

Would like to have it silently DISABLE dashboard upon login, but it's not scriptable :-(

But it does what it says, so great!

MICHAEL WILLIAMS  If you would like I can make a version that when opened it will disable the dashbaord and then exit. That way you can then just chuck in in StartUp item's folder. If you want get really technical then you can use a program (I can't remember what's it's called) that will hide the application icon from the dock so no one notices.

AuctionSieve
Mar 9 2006

TONYGOULDING  Looks nice. Only problem I'm having is when trying to VIEW an auction in Safari. I'm using Saft, and instead of the auction appearing, I get the following.

file:///Library/InputManagers/Saft/Saft.bundle/Contents/Resources/space.gif

I think it's probably a Saft problem, so I'm not attributing the issue to AuctionSieve. However, it is a major pain since Saft is one of those 'can't live without it' apps that I'm not prepared to give up....

Shame.

TONYGOULDING  You need to uncheck the "Block Ad/Banners" or "Block Pop-Up Windows" in the Safari> menu. This also happens (e.g.) in Google searches if you click on one of the featured links at the top or down the right hand side.

*½...

TONYGOULDING  Just a re-affirmation of the below comments, since sometimes you get quirks in different systems/configurations.

Yes, kernel panic ad nauseum.

It started off fine, prompting to identify what kind of recovery you need instead of having to wade through menu options, but as soon as it tried scanning the hard drive - POOF!

Strange that someone would spend (clearly) a lot of time on a piece of s/w like this only to fall down at the finish line...bizarre.
