StuffIt Deluxe 2010
Oct 11 2007

TOMSTRAUS  I would really like to read opinions of how the software works from people who have tried the new StuffIt Deluxe 12.0, rather than from those who are offering criticisms of the company or the pricing.

Opal

TOMSTRAUS  Opal, an OS X update to Acta, has some nice additional features and works as expected. Import of OPML permits translation of a number of other formats to Opal. It doesn't have the extensive feature set of OmniOutliner or TAO, but then, some of us taking notes just want something simple and easy that works fast. Opal does this.

TOMSTRAUS  Version 5.2 presents the message "An exception of class OutOfBoundsExceptions was not handled. The application must now shut down" when starting. I deleted the preference com.koingosw.PasswordRetriever.xml in ~/Library/Preferences and restarted. Was able to open my file once, but the next time I received the same message. Deleted pref again and again I was able to use it once. Needs to be fixed ASAP!

ELACHOWITZ  I submitted a bug report to Koingo this morning - I too have had the same results... This surprises me as I never have had problems with their software before. I have reverted back to 5.19 - (In this version, I can deal with the small "copying" bug which occurs when you click on the copy button in the menu bar, nothing goes to the clipboard - hey, its better then not crashing at all!

TAO
Mar 18 2006
****½

TOMSTRAUS  Now that TAO can import MORE documents, it has become the best outliner currently on the market. Its import of outlines is flawless, including comments, formatting, page breaks, etc., unlike OmniOutliner, which just brings in the basic outline and comments. Its structure is somewhat more cumbersome than MORE was (and still is, under Classic); its style sheets take a bit of practice to master.

The comments about it being only a beta are a bit unfair. The changes made between updates are just that - updates with significant improvements. See VueScan for the way it should be done. This is a worthwhile outliner.
