Readiris Pro
Sep 23 2009

TOMJWRIGHT  Has anyone been able to download the latest version and open it successfully? I downloaded it yesterday and it installed a folder in my Applications folder. But the Readiris 12 folder cannot be opened. The message says that I do not have permission to open the folder. I contacted the company and they suggested several things (repair disk permissions, try another administrator), all to no avail. They now have "opened a case" for my problem but, in the meantime, I have a useless folder. If they don't find a fix soon I'll give up on this product and avoid dealing with this company again.

PCalc
Aug 13 2009

TOMJWRIGHT  Correcting my previous post - It was actually in the early 1990s that I started using pCalc. I guess I'm so used to having it on my computer that I thought I had it earlier. Anyway, it's a great calculator that only gets better over time.

TOMJWRIGHT  This was the first piece of shareware I installed on my Mac SE back in the 1980s. It just gets better and better with every upgrade. James, you are a great contributor to the ease and enjoyment of using a Mac. DragThing and pCalc are absolutely the tops in their fields.

iClipboard

TOMJWRIGHT  I ran into two problems when attempting to set up projects.

First, the program would not remember names assigned to projects -- after assigning a name, the project name would reset to Untitled. If a second project was then added, the result would be two projects, both named Untitled.

Secondly, although the All category would accept additional clippings, none of the newly added projects would accept more than two clippings.

These seem to be problems that should have been caught prior to release.

FLOWERM  I saw the same effect but then I took the time to read the instructions. After typing in the name of the Project you have to hit the Return key before clicking on the Done button. If you do this all new Project titles are kept.

FLOWERM  Oh...but I see what you mean about the two clipping per project problem. I found nothing in the instructions to cover that problem !

SOHO Notes

TOMJWRIGHT  When I upgrdaded from StickyBrain to this program, it erased every entry in my iCal calendars (in fact, it deleted the calendars) and, in addition, removed all information from my Apple Address Book except for the name of each contact (gone were addresses, phone numbers, etc.)

To make matters worse, Chronos support policy is to charge for phone calls and for e-mail trouble-shooting.

Be extremely cautious before using the sync features of this program.

ShutterBug
Jul 10 2006

TOMJWRIGHT  In response to the comment by SJJ_PUBLIC, I have used both ShutterBug and iWeb (in conjunction with iPhoto and dotMac) to create websites and do not agree that ShutterBug is "a complete mess." In fact, I prefer ShutterBug for its greater flexibility. Personal preference may depend somewhat on which program the user is more familiar with. I started using ShutterBug before Apple introduced iWeb.

As for SJJ_PUBLIC's complaint about templates, he (or she) is looking in the wrong place to start designing a website. ShutterBug has many Themes with preview panes. Templates become useful only after selecting a Theme.

TOMJWRIGHT  The latest version of this widget closes immediately after opening on my G5 iMac running OS 10.4.7. This happens every time I try to launch it.
