TIMBO13  Great, I needed to convert some movies and author them to DVD to send to the family back home for xmas. Hopefully this will make it as painless as possible.

TIMBO13  Fun set of classic-style games which I was already thinking about buying at the normal price. What a bargain!

TIMBO13  lol. I work in a noisy Chinese office and don't speak much Chinese... I'm wondering what kind of effect this would have for me.

TIMBO13  Simple, good looking fun.

It's good how it runs on just about every mac, from old G3's to brand new Intel's.

TIMBO13  Are those results on a PPC or Intel Mac?

On my MBP, after launch it is using 11mb memory. After throwing a few different avi's (300mb+ xvids) and mov's (200mb 720p H.264) at it, it's sitting just under 25mb memory. During playback it seems to sit around 58mb memory useage (probably due to file buffering or something).

In any case, memory leaks usually only become an issue after extended/prolonged use.

TIMBO13  haha, typical.

Great to see a intel compatible version of this. Just a little too late for me though. We have a hp laserjet 1010 and have been unable to print to it from our MBP's. We are receiving a new HP laser which is compatible with Mac OS X today. The same day the intel compatible version of these drivers are released which work with our old, no obsolete hp laser... Isn't life ironic. sigh.

TIMBO13  Actually this website does the exact same thing and has been around longer:

http://www.thejosher.net/iTunes/

I used it since it didn't require installing/running an additional program and was usually faster to find incorrectly named music.

TIMBO13  The first time the success page loaded for me, the movie loaded and played fine. Playback seemed ok on my 1ghz iBook G4 but slowed down the rest of my system pretty badly for such a small sized movie without sound.

But as I commented earlier, after closing that browser window, it promptly crashed Safari. Thinking it might be a once off, I loaded Safari back up again and tried the success page again. This time I got the same error as you (""Video playback couldn't be set up").

As I investigated further (in my previous comment) I found it to be even more buggy and unstable... I have uninstalled it now and sticking with default quicktime and VLC.

TIMBO13  It moves a PPC only version of the plugin to the trash during installation. It also installs a universial version of the web plugin in /Library/Internet-Plugins/

I'm not 100% sure if the PPC only version existed before the install... I know for damn sure I never installed DivX before, though. I did a clean install of OS X Tiger just a week ago and I know I didn't install any DivX.

To find everything it installed just use spotlight to search for "divx" in the /Library directory. There is also a ".xpt" file in Internet-Plugins which spotlight doesn't find. There is also 2 apps installed in /Applications

TIMBO13  I would avoid installing this until there is a bugfix update.

Installed DivX 6.5 on Mac OS X 10.4.6 with latest security update. After installing it opens a browser window (in safari) which loads a welcome movie. After playing the movie and closing this browser window, Safari crashed shortly after.

Replicated by going to their website again and loading their trailer for divx for mac. After letting it load for ~30-50 mins Safari was using 500mb "real" memory (seen in activity monitor). After watching some of the movie, I paused it and close the browser window (my machine was starting to chug because it was forced to do a lot of paging). Shortly after closing the browser window Safari crashed, again.

I'll be uninstalling this mess/trash and sticking with VLC's browser plugin, me thinks.

TIMBO13  It looks like there is actually a Windows version as well. Which means you should be able to easily use voice chats with PC friends/people. I have found iChat a little problematic to say the least to talk to PC users.

I still like Skype for this kind of thing and ultimately waiting for gaim to include voice and video, so Adium will get these features.

Apple iMac SMC Firmware Update
May 16 2006

TIMBO13  Taken from: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303725%94

"The SMC Firmware Update 1.0 is a System Management Control (SMC) firmware update for certain Intel-based computers, including iMac (Early 2006), Mac mini (Early 2006) and MacBook Pro (15-inch) computers..."

So it looks like the update effects the "behind the scenes" management of the machines. Perhaps affecting thermal/power management? I would be very interested in the results users have after this update.

****.

TIMBO13  I use this with the CEDICT (ChineseEnglish) dictionary. Very handy little tool for my work and personal use.

I have been looking for something like "PowerWord" on windows which pops up mini translations of text which you mouse over.

This is a nice feature to add to safari (and some other cocoa apps with some modifications - see devs website for tips).

The dev is also quick to respond to required updates and listens to feedback.
