TIM.DEHRING I think the original author was referring to Apple using Software Update on Windows to force users into downloading Safari, and later on, having an iTunes update install a MobileMe control panel without a way to deselect it. Sure, Apple didn't force them to download Safari, but they made it seem like it HAD to be installed. As with MobileMe, it wasn't til recently when Apple made it part of SU and optional at that. But Apple is perfect, I keep forgetting about that part. (Version 3.0.1.321)

TIM.DEHRING Regarding the ability to print cards, calendars, etc...Sure, you can't do that natively in Picasa BUT you have your option from choosing from various online services and go from there. Just FYI :) (Version 3.0.0.310)

TIM.DEHRING I don't understand how this is unneeded, but another browser is welcome? There are a few photo editors (iPhoto and Shoebox come to mind), yet there is Firefox, Safari, Camino, Opera, Shiira, SeaMonkey, etc...and everyone still wants Chrome to come out? (Version 3.0.0.310)

TIM.DEHRING In Picasa, go to Tools-->Folder Manager. Locate the external drive on the left, select it, and on the right, click on the 'eye' to scan always. After that, anytime you add pics on the drive and reopen Picasa, it will detect them and add them for viewing/editing. (Version 3.0.0.310)

TIM.DEHRING Coming from Windows, I used Picasa to edit and organize my photos. Since it ties in with my Gmail account, I can upload my pics to the web as well as send an email from within the program. Now, Mac users of course will point out that iPhoto does all of this and more, but I challenge them to try this out and give it a test. Since I don't feel MobileMe is worth the price for what is offered, you can't beat a free product with 1GB free storage for your photos. There are also more filter options and edits in Picasa than iPhoto, and Picasa is blazing fast. I've tried iPhoto and it does do the job, but I found it to be sluggish on my 2.4GHz Intel iMac with 4GB RAM. I've downloaded Picasa for Mac and am very impressed with what Google is providing to Mac users. Again, give it a try and an honest run before being quick to judge. Of course, tomorrow Apple may introduce a new iPhoto version that is better, now that Picasa is out. :) (Version 3.0.0.310)

ALBION Congratulations on switching. iPhoto is bloated and slow -- agreed. While it doesn't natively support any free hosting services, Flickr does offer a plug-in for iPhoto. I'm going to check out Picasa for Mac now. :) (Version 3.0.0.310)

E_COMMERCE There is also an iPhoto plugin for PicasaWeb. iPhoto may be dog slow, but this just doesn't look "Mac-like" to me. (Version 3.0.0.310)

TIM.DEHRING Not useful for web design? I'm sorry, do you still use Frontpage to do a basic page? This program is great; I don't have to use more than one app for coding, css editing, terminal commands, etc. Well worth the price. (Version 1.6.2)

AOL Desktop | Dec 9 2008 |
TIM.DEHRING The point of this software is an all in one package for AOL. This is great for switchers from Windows that are used to using AOL Desktop so that they don't feel alienated. I should know, my grandfather refuses to get rid of AOL and so when I set up his Mac mini, I made sure I installed AOL for him, and he loved it. (Version 1.5b8)

Safari New Tab Button | Oct 6 2008 |
TIM.DEHRING No review, just some comments: I understand that you can't click for a new tab if you don't have one already. This is also under the assumption that the "Show tab bar" option isn't selected. If it is, double-clicking works just fine. Second, the feature of opening a new page when you create a new tab is already in the Safari 4 developer builds, which is freely available to anyone with a free developer account through Apple. I'm not criticizing this app, especially since Safari 4 is just a developer preview and not finalized yet. Just making everyone aware of the options before they spend the money and then complain about it. (Version 4.5)

TIM.DEHRING Very nice. This isn't the first time a 3rd party developer has stepped up to the aid of the Mac community for this. I remember also that the Icon Factory released an app that would check the integrity of a downloaded file when launched (which has since been implemented into the Finder since 10.4.3(?) I believe). Kudos to the dev! (Version 1.0)

TIM.DEHRING Since this program claims it simply activates Fast User Switching, why not go to System Prefs-->Accounts-->Login Options and check the box to enable it, which then puts an icon in the menubar and has the option to go to the Login Window? I'm not knocking the developer, but I didn't see any difference between this app and what I have enabled already. (Version 1.1)

TIM.DEHRING So I'm officially confused. It's listed here and on their website for $29.95, I understand that. TIM.DEHRING "If the Open XML File Format Converter for Mac is installed, this update enables Office 2004 for Mac to read and write Office documents that are in the Open XML Format." This actually works on my PowerBook G4 that still has Office 2004 installed. Nice! (Version 11.5)

I'm mostly trying to fill a niche for Time Machine users on a laptop who don't own a Time Capsule. If you don't have an external hard drive plugged in and Time Machine fails a backup, the menu item says "Latest Backup: Delayed." If you open the System Preferences, it simply says "Failed." This is more useful for me and it helps me to decide when I want to connect to my external drive. (Version 1.5)
