Things

*****

TICONUCK  There are strengths and weaknesses in all of the competitor in this application category, including Things. But may I just say that I have used a variety of similar applications, most notably OmniFocus, quite extensively, and I really wish that Things had been around sooner, and had matured sooner. It could have saved me so much of the frustration that I experienced with those other apps.

It is very easy to use, and it has a very pleasant interface, and it is quite powerful, without being overwhelming, and without forcing you to use all of its features if you don't want to. I recommend you give it a try. Maybe it will be as good of a fit for you as it is with me.

TICONUCK  I love it. This app will save me a lot of time, and without much of a learning curve, or initial setup time. Very powerful in terms of the number of tasks it can automate, and very flexible in how those tasks can be triggered. Probably one of the best software purchases I've made.

TICONUCK  Very cool. So good I almost bought it despite the fact that I don't use archives much.

TICONUCK  A beautiful piece of software. I only just discovered it, but it now has a home on my Hard Drive and even in my Dock. It is perfectly configurable and comes with a help file that is helpful and concise. It does its job very well, without being heavy on system resources. It really shouldn't be freeware.

Highly recommended. It's going to help me out tremendously!

TICONUCK  I really like it. It's got a slick interface, it's rich in useful features, and it works beautifully. I haven't found any bugs, or weird system resource usage. It's got great customizability. In short, it does its job well and comprehensively. Definitely worth having. It really shouldn't be free.

TICONUCK  I really only like Nucleus. The other 2 included games I probably won't play much at all. I find them way too hard right off the bat. And I find Firefall uninteresting (visually, and otherwise). But Nucleus alone might make the app worth it. So I ignored the other ones, and just rated Nucleus.

I like all the science elements – the black holes with their gravity wells, the electrons and the atoms – it's like something I might have dreamed up during a grade 7 science class.

I wouldn't mind being able to change the difficulty level, though. Because I'm not much of a gamer. I only play games sporadically, and I like to be coddled – less work, more pay-off. But that's just me.

TICONUCK  I also had the same keyboard problem. And this is with a USB keyboard. I don't type nearly as fast as Chris, yet I still had keys not registering during high score entry, if I typed fast. It happened numerous times. I, like Chris, have not had problems with my keyboard elsewhere.

TICONUCK  I have become a definite convert since I wrote my last review of this app. Partly, that comes from using it (I did buy it), and partly that comes from the various minor improvements that have been made to it. And the developers seem very responsive. Also, I must say that the plans they have for future updates/versions of the software are quite exciting.

TICONUCK  It isn't obvious to me what the differences between MindNode Pro and MindNode are. Anyone? A nice comparative list of features for the 2 would be ideal, but I didn't see that on the developer's website or in the documentation. Maybe I didn't look hard enough.

TICONUCK  Also, it would be great to be able to define some custom templates. There are a few other minor tweaks that also could be made. But I understand the app isn't being actively developed. So maybe someone else will come along and make a similar app incorporating the strengths that this one has (that I can't find in any other), but improving on the weaknesses in the ways I have suggested.

And maybe, just maybe, it will be made possible to import one's Studycard files into that app. And then I will buy that app. And then I will live happily ever after, and never be sad ever again, and life will be perfect.

TICONUCK  Best app of its kind I can find. I love the flexibility in composing cards. It wouldn't hurt to have an alternative, simpler entry mode, e.g. with a question field and an answer field. But I wouldn't give up the flexibility offered by the ability to enter text and images, format them freely, and simply enclose the answer in one kind of brackets, and the question in another type. I also leave some things unenclosed in any brackets, so that they always come up before the card is flipped, and other things I enclose in both brackets, so they never come up before the card is flipped (you can set it to alternate randomly between showing you the answer first, or the question first, which is what I do.)

The only thing lacking is that there are a lot of characters that you cannot enter (e.g. for linguistics notation and modern languages), and I find I have to work around that by pasting screenshots of these characters (typed and appropriately formatted in another application) into the text (and adjusting the vertical alignment (using "nudge up"/"nudge down") so they appear to be part of the body of text. (Of course I only do this when I really, really want the characters in there.)

TICONUCK  Beautiful app. Great idea. A pleaure to use. Real potential.

Combine Mental Case's interface beauty and ease-of-use with Studycard Studio's richness of features and of customizability; then on top of that add hierarchical folders ("cases"), tagging, and comments, and I'd gladly pay $30 or quite possibly more for it!

Well done!
