myTexts snow | Nov 2 2009 |
THUS.SPAKE.Z Well now, it looks like MOApp has just dropped the price of myTexts snow as well as myTexts regular down from $24 or 16€ to $19 or 14€. Really nice! If you wanna go for it, do so. myTexts, both versions, are indeed quite good. But I'm still partial to WriteRoom. However, if myTexts snow is offered as a Promo, I will go for it. (Version 1.1)

myTexts snow | Nov 2 2009 |
THUS.SPAKE.Z If you favor a white background in a distraction free writing environment, myTexts snow fills the bill. myTexts (regular version) offers 8 different colors as backgrounds. my texts' UI for writing is quite nice....the note feature being particularly nifty. I've been using Writeroom for some time. I purchased it nearly three years ago when it was offered for $15 as a MacUpdate promo. It's regularly $25. Writeroom works just fine for me....I really like it and am sticking with it. It's got an unlimited choice of color selections for screen background and writing field (white included), as well as for cursor color. There's also JDarkroom which is free, but it's rather "clunky". But I do like myTexts snow and will buy it if and when it's offered as a MacUpdate promo. I'm just not willing to pay $24 for it. It seems that much of MOApp's software is getting more pricey in terms of the US dollar.....no doubt because the greenback's value is steadily going down the toilet vis a vis most of the world's stronger currencies. About This Particular Macintosh | Nov 1 2009 |
THUS.SPAKE.Z I cut my Mac using teeth on OS 9; and most of my memories of it are saturated with rememberances are of CRASH! CRASH! CRASH! CRASH! CRASH! Jesus Christ, did it ever drive me to near insanity. Now, OS 10, especially in its later incarnations.....AHHHHH! Near Nirvana. Which is not to say that I haven't had any Pain in- the-ass issues with OS 10, but nothing remotely like the OS 9 experience. (Version 15.11)

World First Currency Converter Widget | Oct 29 2009 |
THUS.SPAKE.Z A big drawback of this currency converting widget is it's lack of inclusion of some important currencies. Let's see now; the Uganda Schilling, the Mauritius Rupee, the Tonga Pa-anga and the Samoa Tala are important enough to include but NOT the Brazilian Real or Russian Ruble or Chinese Yuan??? Oh come on now! Really poor judgement on the part of the developer. This shortcoming makes WFCC nearly useless for all practical purposes. Also, the list of available currencies is not alphabetized. I'd much rather use an online currency converter such as Yahoo's one at:http://finance.yahoo.com/currency-converter/#from=ARS;to=EUR;amt=1. There are other very good ones, too. Just do a search for online currency converters. (Version 1.0)

THUS.SPAKE.Z Well, the deceitful schmucks are at it once again. The developer and colleagues have, obviously, got their buddies to load MacUpdate with positive comments for their app. The commenters below, Mieze, Ausstan, Alexvovxhenko, Ivanoff, R397, Inemoss, all have no other comments or reviews posted on MacUpdate, no downloads(except for R397) and all have last log-in dates of between September 24th -27th, 2009. Personally, I have absolutely NO confidence in such ethically corrupt developers nor in their software. I absolutely DO NOT trust them. No doubt, personal integrity is a concept unknown to them. As far as I'm concerned, they can take their software and shove it up their bungholes! There's no shortage of quality maintenance apps offered by trustworthy developers from which to choose: Tinker Tool System, Cocktail, Onyx for example. (Version 1.6.1)

iAntiVirus | Oct 13 2009 |
THUS.SPAKE.Z I, also, have the issue of my MacBook Pro's temps sometimes shooting up and fans spinning at over 5000 rpm when "Protect My Mac" is on. When checking Activity Monitor, I find that iavd is at nearly 100%. Turning "Protect My Mac" off brings temps back down and fans back to idle speed (2000 rpm). Hope the developers find a fix for this issue. Other than this one problem, iAntivirus seems to work ok and is fast. It hasn't found any viruses, yet, but that's because there aren't any active ones in the wild at this time, but I do like to keep an anti virus program available and run it once in a while. Autumn Screensaver | Oct 12 2009 |
THUS.SPAKE.Z Pleasantly soothing to gaze at. Requirements say that it's for 10.6 but it works just fine for me with OS 10.5. Would like to see the option to set one's choice of background to any color, not just black. And allowing the tree image to be made larger would be sweet, too. But otherwise really nice, esthetically pleasing work for a screensaver. (Version 1.0)

3D Desktop Zombies! Screen Saver | Oct 9 2009 |
THUS.SPAKE.Z While I don't feel that Zombies(rather lame) is worth the price or is worth spending any time with, this developer can come up with some esthetically appealing screensavers, i.e. Desktop Dolphins and Pyramids of Egypt. Most of his screensavers are not IMHO worth the price of admission, but then there are virtually no screensavers out there that are actually worth $10. My all time favorite screensaver is "Electric Sheep"; It's brilliant, beautiful and fascinating (free of charge, too). (Version 2.0)

Previous version, 10.4.8 had been working just fine for me( I'm not running OS 10.6, but 10.5.8 on a MacBook Pro Intel core 2 duo) so I reinstalled it and I'm back to mouse nirvana. I've been using USB Overdrive for more than 3 years and loving it. Since I've no intention of installing Snow Leopard in the foreseeable future I'll just stick with a good thing, which is what USB Overdrive 10.4.8 is; it's very trouble free and smooth working. THUS.SPAKE.Z xBack crashes every time when trying to run the wonderful screensaver "Electric Sheep". I notified xBack's developer about this issue a while back but so far no fix. Maybe in xBack's next version, hmm? One can hope. Wallsaver runs Electric Sheep without problems, though, so a fix should be quite feasible. Otherwise, xBack works quite well....been using it for several years. (Version 3.7.6)

THUS.SPAKE.Z Works just fine on my MacBook Pro Intel core 2 duo w/10.5.8. Wallsaver's U.I. isn't as polished/slick as xBack's (been using xBack for several years...it's $10), however, Wallsaver runs my all time favorite screensaver, "Electric Sheep" smoothly and without issue while xBack crashes every time when trying to run it. It would be nice if Wallsaver had a setting to utilize screensaver options just as xBack does, though. A menu bar icon to invoke Wallsaver's features would be sweet....xBack has one. With the above mentioned additions, I'd be willing to pay a few drachmas for Wallsaver. (Version 2.5.2)

Stellar Wipe | Sep 5 2009 |
THUS.SPAKE.Z Yeah, you can download Stellar Wipe but you can't use it; when you attempt to do so, it tells you to register it to complete the wiping process, which means buying it first. So there's NO trial period in actuality since its totally unusable. For this reason, I give Stellar Wipe THE FINGER. No functional trial period? Makes a lot of sense, no? THUS.SPAKE.Z Was glad to see Mighty Mouse finally available for OS 10.5 after a long wait. Updates from Unsanity are a long time in coming. I used MM in Tiger when I had a Powerbook but then moved up to a MacBook Pro and Leopard. Now, any cursor that I select in Mighty Mouse 2.01b disappears from my desktop within a few hours, reverting back to my Mac's own cursor. I emailed Unsanity about it a couple of times but got no reply; oh well, another software developer whose customer support stinks. When I installed version 2.0.1b I got a notice asking for a $7 contribution to help them with software development. I foolishly gave it to them; I was delighted to have Mighty Mouse available again. Well, I now feel that these schmucks don't deserve any contributions in light of their foot-dragging regarding updates and their stinko customer support. (Version 2.0b1)

THUS.SPAKE.Z Onyx is good and, of course it's free. I'm a fan of Tinker Tool System. Been using that one for several years without any issues. It's now $16. And Leopard Cache Cleaner is no slouch. It's $10. TTS's and LCC's developers can be counted on to make their apps Snow Leopard compatible. They're quite on the ball. But Macaroni works automatically and works well, too. Good question about Snow Leopard compatibility, though. I just emailed the developer about it. MICHAëL FORTIN Personally I think an alarm would be out of place in this screensaver. The alarm would only be activated when the screen saver is active. THUS.SPAKE.Z I gave the download another go and it went pretty fast this time, just a few minutes. It launched without issue. Took it for a spin and it seems well designed and fun. No problems. I then decided to try another download to see if the process remained fast and stable. Once again extremely slow going, with the remaining download time going all the way up to past 1 day ! and a download speed of less than .7kb/sec. I tried installing my first download once again and this time got a message telling me that "the file/volumes Neverball 1.5.2 .mpkg does not exist! Clearly there's big trouble with the downloads; very wonky and unstable. But my original installation remains intact and plays very well. If you can manage to score a fast, trouble free download and installation, I think that you'll find Neverball fun and challenging. The developer needs to make the download process work well every time, though. (Version 1.5.2)

THUS.SPAKE.Z The download, whether via MacUpdate or directly from the developer's website takes forever. It started with time remaining at just a few minutes and then kept increasing to a half hour, then one hour. When I went to the kitchen for a repast and returned an hour later, the downoad still showed over two hours remaining!! And I've got a fast DSL internet connection. So I stopped the download, put it in the trash and went on my merry way. Most downloads of 52mbs, the size of this one, take just a few short minutes but this POS is very constipated. Dunno what's up with that, but I don't need the aggravation. (Version 1.5.2)

JAMMNROSE I am one of the developers of Neverball and can shed some light on the issue. We have two download mirrors, caffeinatedcontent.com and icculus.org, which users are transparently redirected to... I did just try downloading from both servers and they seemed to both be fast. All I can say is click the download link on the site, if it's going slow, cancel and retry until you get it going faster (different mirror)... It also could be due to some server maintenance that happened recently. If anyone else has issues, please reply and try to include which mirror it was coming from. (Version 1.5.2)

THUS.SPAKE.Z I'm sorry, but Virtual FireworksX is crude and garish, especially when compared with the elegant, beautifully designed and very esthetically appealing "Skyrocket" screensaver. http://seiryu.home.comcast.net/~seiryu/savers.html. Check it out. (Version 2.1)

THUS.SPAKE.Z The website belongs to a Benedictine monastery in Bangladesh. Their biblical translations are in the Bengali language only....not useful to/usable by most of the English speaking world. I'm just puzzled about why they would choose to offer software of such very limited appeal through MacUpdate (???) (Version 2.0.3)

CleanMyMac | Jun 14 2009 |
THUS.SPAKE.Z Downloaded this but dunno how safe it is to use. CleanMyMac looks interesting but could potentially wreck my OS, and I don't need that aggravation. MacPaw's staff and developer(s) seem quite young and MacPaw has no track record. Don't know how responsible/reliable they are or how long they'll be around to support their software. Could become abandonware at some point? I think that I'll pass on this. Seems too risky. I don't feel at all comfortable about using it. (Version 1.5)

THUS.SPAKE.Z Well, I declare, Firefox now seems to be just as fast as Safari 4 or any of the other sprightly browsers....iCab, Opera. Never thought I'd see the day. And I do prefer Firefox's features over the others. Hmm. Firefox just might become my default browser now. Dunno yet, I'll have to mull it over. (Version 3.0.11)

iClock Pro | Jun 9 2009 |
THUS.SPAKE.Z With 1.0 b17 iClock Pro now works beautifully (at least it does for me). It's nice to see the developer finally conscientious about fixing bugs....a far cry from iClock's earlier incarnation of several years ago when, bug ridden, it would languish forever unattended to. IClock Pro is now a joy to use. (Version 1.0b17)

THUS.SPAKE.Z This particular beta version is buggy. When quitting iClock's preferences or Mini Calendar, System UI Server crashes with the message "The application SystemUIServer quit unexpectedly. The problem may have been caused by he iClockTimeMenu plug-in. Also, most of my time/location settings do not appear in the menu bar read out. The previous beta version worked just fine. iPhoto gridSaver | Jun 6 2009 |
THUS.SPAKE.Z Works really nicely on my MacBook pro core 2 duo w/Leopard 10.5.7, although it does cause System Preferences to crash once in a while, even though a copy of iPhoto library is in my ~/Pictures folder. I've got many hundreds of incredible Sound Spectrum "G-Force" screenshots that I've saved and iPhotogridsaver presents them really effectively. The images in the grid can be set to change at intervals of 1-5 seconds and the number of rows of images set from 2-8. Makes for some very satisfying eye candy. (Version 1.1)

THUS.SPAKE.Z Well, the crashes are occurring regularly now, usually within a minute after actuating gridSaver, every time. Maybe I oughta deduct one of my stars....I was bit too generous. So it's four stars after all; the full five stars comes after the crashing issue is resolved. Too bad, 'cause gridSaver is really a sweet little confection otherwise. (Version 1.1)

Speed Freak | May 29 2009 |
THUS.SPAKE.Z When I click on the "activate" or "hold" tab in Speed Freak's U.I. panel I often get an AppleScript error message("The specified object is a property, not an element. [-10008]" I've no idea what that means or why that message is appearing. I emailed the developer about the error message but have gotten no reply from him. Hmm, another developer who can't be bothered with providing support? Yeah, Speed Freak is free but does a free app mean that the developer is absolved of the courtesy of responding to legitimate queries? (Version 2.8)

THUS.SPAKE.Z Works just fine on my late '08 Macbook Pro core 2 duo. OmniDisksweeper does the job quite well and is now free. Go for it; it's a no brainer. I bought it several years ago and have used it many times without issues. (Version 1.7)

SafariBlock | May 22 2009 |
THUS.SPAKE.Z Upon launching Safari browser, a Safariblock "welcome" message appears right in your face on top of the just launched Safari page. I find it quite annoying. There's no apparent way to disable it from appearing. True you can easily quit the message but still, is the message really necessary? And in ones face no less? Other than that annoyance, Safariblock is really fine. (Version 2.2r1)

CYBORG9 I agree! The very "in your face" message states, "Safariblock 2 will eliminate the annoying advertisements you see while browsing the internet". Well, what is the message if not an annoying advertisement. And there's way to eliminate that annoying advertisement. Developer, get rid of it; it's totally unnecessary. (I wonder, what was the developer's rationale for including it....makes no sense at all.) (Version 2.2r1)

CPU Speed Accelerator | May 17 2009 |
THUS.SPAKE.Z Greek localization for Version 4.4, whoopee! Let's break out the retsina and all drink a toast to the developer for this brilliant move. A new localization in itself warrants a new posting here on Macupdate?. I mean, there's no update to CPU Speed Accelerator other than Greek localization, huh? Way to go, developer. You've already established a bad reputation for yourself here at MacUpdate. But you really want to dig a deeper hole for yourself, right. You've long demonstrated a propensity for shooting yourself in the foot, haven't you? Well, pour me another glass and I'll have another serving of spanakopita, please. THUS.SPAKE.Z Dress Assistant has made life for Mey Ling, my personal valet. masseuse, concubine, and sex toy so much easier. Dressing me each day is now a cinch. My wardrobe containing 85 suits, 50 sport jackets, 120 pairs of shoes, 165 shirts , 140 ties, 200 pairs of underpants(in assorted colors), and 125 pairs of socks ( and more items added all the time)) was a nightmare to wade through without Dress Assistant. Now, she just fires up the Mac, coordinates my outfit for the day or occasion and dresses me with aplomb., whistling a happy tune all the while. Long live conspicuous consumption. THUS.SPAKE.Z After installing Leopard 10.5.7 over 10.5.6 I installed the Safari 4b update over my previous Safari 4b installation. Everything's working just fine here. No issues to report. I've got Glims and Glimmerblocker installed.....no problems. (Version 3.2.3)

NetShade | May 12 2009 |
THUS.SPAKE.Z The problems that folks here have reported with the developer and Netshade iitself are nothing new. They've been been going on for years. I've purchased and used this app, had problems with it, contacted developer and found him completely unresponsive. In my experience, available public proxies become fewer and fewer over time 'till eventually there are none that work, especially so of the most secure ones. And one can't be sure that one's own I.P. address is really being hidden when using any of the proxies. Don't know about you, but I'd rather not use Netshade under a false sense of security. In light of Mr. Rayner's ongoing inattentiveness to his app and his customers, I'd have to say that it wouldn't surprise me at all if Netshade becomes abandonware at some point. To potential Netshade purchasers: prepare to experience a lot of aggravation if you intend to purchase Netshade. The hassles just aren't worth it. (Version 3.3.4)

Electric Sheep | May 1 2009 |
THUS.SPAKE.Z As far as screensavers/visualisers go, Electric Sheep is, IMO, in the same league as the wonderful G-Force; both render some incredibly beautiful and breathtaking imagery. What E.S. lacks, however, is method to capture screenshots, which G-Force already has. E.S. sorely needs that feature. I think that it would be a very interesting collaboration for the developers of both E.S. and G-Force to work together and combine techniques. Anyway, been using E.S. for some time now and loving it. In light of the apparent glitches with E.S. 2.7b15, I'll stick with version 2.6 for now and wait for the beta to evolve into a stable version. (Version 2.7b15)

THUS.SPAKE.Z So far, version 5 is working beautifully for me. Earlier, when I attempted to download the zip file all I got was an html file which, when clicking on it took me back to the MacUpdate page. I asked the developer to send me a working download and he did so within 20 minutes. Now that's outstanding customer service! My license code was automatically accepted; I already had the previous iTubeX Ultimate version installed and didn't have to enter the code # myself. I've got nothing but praises for the app as well as the developer. It's been an incredibly good experience. (Version 5.0)

ROGER KATZ I have had the same download problem that is described here, as well as having this download problem with two earlier versions of iTubeX Ultimate. The developer was kind to very promptly directly send me the I application. I agree that the developer deserves a round of thanks and applause for his excellent customer service with respect to giving prompt attention to working around this mysterious MacUpdate problem. By the way, despite the fact that I successfully download numerous MacUpdate applications (almost every day, for several months), I have recently experienced this same download problem with two other MacUpdate downloads. Warblade | Apr 24 2009 |
THUS.SPAKE.Z While the game is well designed and executed, it's also treacherous, mean spirited and backstabbing. Not only does it spit in one's face, it also kicks one in the gonads. I, too, found it great fun initially, but, as the developer tightened the screws, making Warblade more vicious, I essentially gave up in disgust; I now play it only occasionally. Snooker | Apr 24 2009 |
THUS.SPAKE.Z So what's the problem with allowing the potential buyer a good number of full games? If the game is "excellent" as you claim, then, I would think that the developer would want the player to immerse him/her self in the full game experience, and hook the player in. As it stands now, I have no doubt that developer is alienating no small number of potential customers (Version 10.7)

Wyzo | Apr 22 2009 |
THUS.SPAKE.Z I can't see why I would want to use Wyzo instead of Firefox or any of the other decent browsers available. Nothing really unique about it. I'll stay with Firefox in lieu of Wyzo, with Safari 4 as my default browser. Safari 4's quite a bit more sprightly, although it's still needs some fine tuning; it's still in beta. No need or inclination to add Wyzo to my browser choices. Don't know why a new browser is needed unless it can demonstrably blow the others away in some areas. And Wyzo clearly can't. It's not that Wyzo is bad, it's actually OK, but there's nothing special about it. It just doesn't wow me. (Version 3.0.2)

Batch Enhancer's icons disappear from iPhoto window after using B.E. for the first time. B.E. apparently still needs lots of work to make it run smoothly and problem free.
