MacTheRipper | Aug 30 2008 |
THECAUSE MacTheRipper claims to be 'free' but to get the full and best mactheripper 3.0 you need to donate. So shouldn't 2.6.6 be called a demo? Additionally, the latest donationware version on the 3.0 version 'phones home' every time you use it. So it is very possible that personal information of yours *may* be broadcast across the internet, which could also identify you as an MacTheRipper user. Doesn't it seem ironic that the developer of an app used to help circumvent movie protections is implementing an anti-piracy scheme for his own-software? Where did this project go wrong? What ever happened to open source being open source? (MTR is dependent upon the open-sourced GPL libdvdread and libdvdcss libraries.) Great software core, terrible chains tied to it and bad exploitation of open source resources. (Version 2.6.6)

Snapz Pro X | Aug 6 2008 |
THECAUSE From the get go Snapz Pro X 2.1.2 is obnoxious with a startup screen that takes a very long time to go away at every launch. Further more, its interface further invades your workspace by requiring you to click again to do something simple like a screen shot. Very invasive, would work better with assigning key commands for each function. (apple+shift+2 for video, apple+shift+3 for screen, etc.) It also corrupted my screen shot button (apple+shift+4), making it give me an error every time I used it. The only redeemable feature is the movie capture mode, and you can now get this from Copernicus for free dollars as opposed to spending $29 and having a bloated app on your computer to take video. Snapz Pro X | Aug 7 2008 |
Snapz Pro X 2 displays the splash screen every time it launches. As Snapz Pro X 2 is in your Login Items, it displays each time the machine is logged into. Splash screens are pretty standard for third party applications - from Adobe Photoshop, to Unreal Tournament. Snapz Pro X 2 also runs invisibly in the background, not in the Dock, so the splash screen indicates to users that it is up and running. As for "ts interface further invades your workspace by requiring you to click again to do something simple like a screen shot." that is the control preference that allows you to finely tune the capture that you take before you take it. This control panel is rather small when you compare it to what it offers the user. you do not need to set up key commands as when you invoke the software, all you have to do is follow it up with a tap on the number 1, 2, 3, or 4, which is the options for the Screen, Objects, Selection, Movie. So, hotkey, and then quickly press a number. relatively fast and painless. We have not encounted any problems with the screen shot buttons corruptions, if you write to help@ambrosiasw.com i'm sure they will be more than happy to help you in figure that aspect out. All that said, if you do not want to see the splash screen at the beginning, type the following into the Terminal: defaults write com.ambrosiasw.snapz SkipSplashScreen true and you should be all set. In regards to Copernicus, it's a free application, and it's usages and options are not surprisingly much less than Snapz Pro X 2 which is aimed at not only novice users, but also the Prosumer alike. Those wishing to learn more about Snapz Pro X 2 can download a free trial and test it out to compare this against the other screen capture software available. Thank you for your comments and we need to see things like this to keep us continually building bigger and better applications to keep the Mac Users happy. (Version 2.1.2)

THECAUSE From the get go this software is incredibly obnoxious as it squawks at you in a harsh robotic tone for everything you do. This tone was consistently harassing me as unnecessary dialog boxes popped up while the application was open. After being attacked the harsh tones, the user interface is terribly strewn throughout in the main window and made my eyes bleed slightly. I opted for this app because it has VLC support, however, it is not available from the get go, you have to enable it, making this program even worse in its functionality. While the idea of this application is well needed in the Macintosh community, the execution is poor resulting in great disappointment. (Version 1.6)

THECAUSE I tried using Apple's Mail with imap as an alternative to Mailplane and while it was a mostly positive experience, when Mail decided to get all the accounts up to date it would take every single bandwidth resource and cause other programs to drop their Internet connection and sometimes Mail would even crash. (ie. a cd querying the CD Database would freeze in itunes) I noticed this problem on other computers with faster Internet connections, and the same hording of system Internet resources existed. This is the reply that I recieved when I voiced these concerns: "I see no need for automatic updating, as such a feature provides a whole lot of dead traffic to my web site - which has to be paid for - and is a relatively minor issue as anyone who looks at my web page can quickly see what the latest versions are." -Richard Bannister March 13, 2006 So all we, the users, are to the author is traffic. DANIELFLUGT Couldn't agree more with the other reply - Emulators are rarely updated, so there is no need for automatic updates Besides, I hate when people complain about lack of support for free software. Why should he pay for dead traffic when you get his software for free? The fact alone that you rate stability, value, features and ease of use by one star each shows that you don't really care for the software nor the brilliant MacUpdate site for that matter, as you only see it fit for crying about a polite reply from a developer, who actually takes time to reply you without gaining any profit whatsoever. ZED Awesome compression and numerous options. A lot of work obviously went into this application and it shows. Compression is excellent, allowing clear pictures without substituting size. Some complain that it does not convert audio. Call me simple but I want an newsreader for my news, a music player for my music and a video compressor just for my video. When authors get swiss army knife on applications they lose focus on improving what is important. A queue option would still be greatly appreciated in future versions, and without a queue it is greatly hindered. Nonetheless, overall great software, and after going through numerous other software compression programs this is one of the few that actually works. (Version 1.0)

ZED Thank you for taking time to make a wonderfull application for Subtitles for macintosh. Subsync is the only application I could find for it so it was One suggestion that would make life easier on the user is the ability to drag and drop subtitle files onto the application, and have them open. I do this almost habitually and get slightly frustrated when I can't. Keep up the great work! I am giving limelight to your application on my community.... http://www.livejournal.com/community/macdvd/ (Version 1.0)

Sorry, I couldn't find any host named SubSyncX.tk. (#5.1.2) The same result occurs for your guestbook. Many people would love to give you commentary but unfortunately neither of your contact sources are working at the moment. (Version 1.0)

ZED It has refused to work under my computer's OS. It continues to tell me the drivers are not installed in the preferences, when they are installed from this installer. I am on 10.2, an ibook, 128 MB Ram, 800 MHZ. (Version 1.2)

ZED Excellent viewing software. Though I wish it had more functionality. Long file names would get chopped off. They should instead go down to the next line. You should also be able to display any of all the available fields. Finally, viewing of artwork, with an option of resizing it to fit the desired preference would be great. Thanks! (Version 1.0)
