VMware Fusion
Oct 27 2009

TEORIC  Did they also tell you they were going to release a major upgrade within a little more than a month and that only ‘Customers who purchase VMware Fusion 2 from October 1, 2009 [i.e. two weeks after the promo] through end of November qualify for a free downloadable upgrade to VMware Fusion 3’[1]?

Of course, Fusion 2 is a good product, but this rapid major update is somewhat – surprising?

Adobe Reader
Oct 14 2009

TEORIC  Preview has its issues, too, and sometimes disagrees with other viewers such as Adobe Reader and XPDF/Poppler (including derivatives). For instance on my computers, it messes up the fonts of nearly all PDFs generated by MS Word (Windows) – and other viewers do not.

It can therefore be handy to have ‘the standard’ application available (and, yes: I know that PDF is supposed to be viewer independent). Even if we don't take the ‘standard’ issue too seriously, Adobe reader is probably the easiest to install ‘alternative’ PDF viewer for the Mac. So it is far from superfluous.

Still, I agree it would not harm if usability were improved and maccified.

TEORIC  Well, yummy is not usable as a file manager, is it? Furthermore, it does not easily permit to choose ‘commander’ type keyboard shortcuts.

So, open your eyes, there are differences (even if they may be irrelevant to you).

But of course, neither programme beats the flexibility of the midnight commander in a terminal, but sometimes clicking is quite nice. ;-)

PlugSuit
Nov 30 2008

TEORIC  The installation program gives me only the option to install locally; since 1.5.6, it has given me a warning that I my local drive is not the system drive (filevault is activated). PlugSuit indeed does not work.

Moving the PlugSuit from ~/Library/PreferencePanes to /Library/PreferencePanes (i.e. the system-wide directory) makes PlugSuit work. As long as this option has not been included in the installer, this is a work-around.

(Otherwise, I like PlugSuit very much – especially being able to switch plug-ins on and off!)

iTerm
Dec 30 2007

TEORIC  This terminal allows using normal keys (Page-Dn, End etc.) in fullscreen terminal apps (vim, mutt, mc, etc.); overall the keyboard feels more adequate (coming from Linux/FreeBSD, I have to admit). Apple Terminal can be configured(!) to allow this for most keys, but it does not work well for me (10.4/10.5). Therefore, iTerm is often the first application I start and the last I quit.
