TAOEFFECT  Another note to that: After turning off the status bar (supposedly) from the preferences and removing the preferences pane, it still left its uBarAgent running in the background.

This shouldn't happen, if I turn it off, it should be gone, and this also caused the error beep sound to happen each time I switched spaces, probably because the system tried to switch to the agent but it was hung or something.

TAOEFFECT  The .DS_Store file is a hidden file. Since Houdini reveals these files you now see it. The .DS_Store file has a special purpose for the Finder. It places one in every folder that has any special configurations on it.

When you deleted your .DS_Store file, you deleted those configurations as well, and that's why your view settings were reverted back to default.

This is not a bug in Houdini, it's just how the Finder works.

TAOEFFECT  This software isn't for people looking for a shiny Cocoa-application. It's for people looking for a top-of-the-line mathematical and computational tool. I've yet to come across any software that can compare with Matlab in this regard, it's amazing.

Its language is very easy to work with, well designed. People with limited programming experience should be able to pick it up easily.

The built-in documentation is top class as well. I've compared it with Mathematica's documentation, and it blows it away. It's easy to search, comprehensive, and the examples work.

Matlab makes it painfully easy to manipulate and visualize data, and run various experiments. Its full capabilities are rarely tapped, as it can even integrate with various other languages. If you're looking for a product that makes it easy to do hard things, look no further.

TAOEFFECT  FileVault is exactly what you want if you want to encrypt your entire Library folder.

Espionage is designed to encrypt individual folders to save you from the performance hit incurred by FileVault. Encrypting your entire Library folder would result in a fairly significant performance hit, and if you're not concerned about that you should just use FileVault.

Espionage also stores its preferences and database in the Library folder, and if you encrypt that you'd have a rather nasty Catch-22 situation.
