Except no one really wants to install crapwares like Stuffit expander onto their computer.

Please compile this program as an universal binary. Also, to comply with the GPL, you have to include the modified source code.

Because OS X icons aren't available for free?

Personally, I think the icons from the Oxygen (supplying icons for KDE4)/Tango (supplying icons for GNOME) fits nicely in OS X. In fact, I find the subdued look of Tango more attractive than OS X icons.

Does Transmission 0.7 support Azureus' and µTorrent's Message stream encryption?

Regarding native interface: Unlike most Java applications, Azureus uses SWT (rather than Swing), which is just a thin layer on top of Carbon. This means its interface is fully native and there is no emulation at all.

I don't think there is a file size limitation for MU hosting.

This being said, OS X supports segmented disk images. Just man hdiutil and search for "segment". Since the application is Tiger-only, you can also make use of the new UDBZ image format, which uses bzip2 compression.

In this latest incarnation of Firefox, the "Mac" theme has taken a nosedive. In fact, the new visuals will look ugly on every platform except Vista (It looks awful even on Windows XP).

Personally, I believe the Mozilla Visual Identity team must be mad to release this kind of work to the Mac platform where users have a much higher expectations about HIG compliance.

To solve this problem, Mac users have two options:

- Switch to Camino, which features a Cocoa UI and integration with system spellchecking service in version 1.1 alpha 1

- Use the updated Pinstripe theme: http://kmgerich.com/2006/09/27/pinstripe-for-firefox-now-with-20-more-macintosh/

On the other hand, The Unarchiver supports 7z, which is far more common due to its open source root, cross-platform nature and high compression ratio. I have only seen old .sit file around the internet. For the most, I think we can say .sitx is irrelevant.

With the release of Azureus 2.5, a number of OS X-specific bug fixes and enhancements were added.

The most notable of these would be .torrent file association. Now you can double-click the torrent file to open it in Azureus.

Another important feature addition would be NAT-PMP support, which enables automatic port mapping in Airport wireless routers.

Finally, Azureus 2.5 uses SWT 3.2, which makes use of Quartz for drawing. This means GUI redraw performance is vastly improved.

Yes, Azureus 2.5 is a universal binary.

Cocoa/Java is deprecated in Tiger. Also, one of the biggest advantage of ImageJ is its cross platform nature. Porting it to Cocoa would mean it will no longer be cross platform.

As for the out of memory problem, you need to increase the heap size of the Java VM in order to be able to open large files. There is a setting in ImageJ for this.

Websites can still obtain an IP address, but it certainly won't be your IP address. It will be the IP of another onion router on the network.

Vim is a command line based program. If you prefer a "Cocoa version", you can always open up terminal and type "vim" (vim 6.3 comes with OS X)

That's expected: You are running a x86 OS on an x86 processor. You should expect 80% of native performance from this kind of "emulation" (more properly known as virtualization)

With the upcoming processor support for para-virtualization and Xen, 90+% of native performance should be possible.

This release is able to decode the cook audio codec, which is the most widely used real audio codec for streaming. However, note that VLC still doesn't have support for the ACELP.net codec used in real audio 4 and 5 as well as the ATRAC3 codec used in real audio 8.

This release still does not have a decoder for recent versions of real video codecs.

Under version 2.0 alpha, the system wide service no longer works and remembering text position doesn't work at all for PDf files.

Works as advertised: checks your gmail account every 2 minutes, can act as your default email program and has Applescript and plugin support!

While version 1.8.2 brings new icons and update notification, it now uses plain http access instead of https (encrypted) access. The new icons also fail to blend in with the other menu bar icons.

The "Inbox" and "Compose" menu items are hardcoded to use the Gmail website. The default mail program setting is only used by browsers and other programs when they encounter an email link.

If you prefer mail.app for email composition and only want a tool to check your gmail account, then I would suggest the Gmail widget from Google.

7zip is an open format. 7zip (the win32 application) is an open source program (in fact, one of the most popular on sourceforge). So I wouldn't dismiss the format as a replacement for the proprietary .sit and .rar (both of which offer inferior crossplatform support and compression ratio)

This is mostly normal. 7Zip compression is very CPU intensive. However, the decompression is very fast regardless of the compression setting.

This is a Quicktime plugin. To test how well it works, just open your 3ivx/divx/xvid file in Quicktime.

Have you always used to auto-update function to update your compy of Azureus. In that case, the version number in the Azureus.app package won't be changed. This is probably why the versoin # displayed by Get Info is only 2.2.0.2

The only reliable way to check the version number is to check the About dialogue of Azureus.

You will have to wait for Camino 1.1 to have spell-checking integration. The patch is already in, but the developers deemed the change to be too drastic for version 1.0.

Strain on CPU? Azureus is using less than 4% of my CPU when hidden and no more than 7% when opened. This is with RC4 encryption enabled (to prevent shaping) and I only have a G4. So I don't see what's the problem here.

Please note that Java *does not* run in interpreted mode. All java applications are compiled to native code when launched. Also, the Hotspot JIT is much more advanced than Rosetta and is able to *exceed* native performance under the -server mode (Java is used extensively on enterprise servers)

I haven't confirmed the file association bug yet (on 2.4). However, the icon problem is present in the *latest version* (2.4). You can try it yourself by opening up the ratings dialogue and check your dock icon. I am sure this is just a slip-up on the developer's part since there used to be a related bug that was fixed a long time ago.

As for the resource-hogging, it actually became quite resonable lately. Running on Java 5 allowed me to get the memory footprint down to 30-40mb. This is quite light compared to most web browsers. Also, I have never seen the CPU-cycle hogging as reported by the previous posters and I only have a G4! However, Azureus does hog CPU and Disk IO during hashing, but that only lasts a few minutes and you can turn on a slower version that is not so hard on your machine.

Azureus does have a few bugs. The most obvious one is the file assocation problem (double click won't open .torrent files). The developers have known this problem for a long time now and apparantly it has something to do with Apple's Java implementation.

A second bug is the taskbar icon, which sometimes switch to an ugly low res icon. This is actually due to the ratings plugin. If you ever open the ratings dialogue, then the taskbar icon will be switched. To fix this, you can either avoid opening the dialogue or just uninstall the plugin if you have no use for it.

As far as features goes, Azureus is the best of the bunch. It not only includes many useful features, such as UPnP port forwarding, Encrypted connection (against Rogers bandwidth throttling), trackerless download etc., but it also has a plugin framework which allow you to add additional funcionality to the software.

It also became easier for novices to use since version 2.3.0.6. With the beginner mode, Azureus hides away many of the complex (and rarely used) settings from novices, which makes it much less likely for beginners to get confused and mess up the settings.

Unlike some of the previous reviewers, I found the performance of Azureus to be excellent. I have rarely seen beach balls and the interface is as snappy as any native Cocoa applications (note that Azureus uses SWT, which uses native widgets). One thing to note here is that by default, Azureus launches with Java 1.4.2 instead of Java 5, so you will need to edit "info.plist" inside the Azureus.app package and specify 1.5+ for JVM in order to bring out the best performance.

Stability is always where Azureus shines. Again, I have only seen Azureus freezing once during years of use, compared to several crashes per month for Safari or one freeze every few months for BitsOnWheels. Azureus also seen to be able to handle low traffic torrents better than other BT clients and tends to downloads at a higher speed.
