Return to Dark Castle | Feb 29 2008 |
SIMX Compared to the latest beta that was released 2.5 years ago on the Z Sculpt website, this release is *excellent*. I experienced no crashes, no glitches, no bugs, and everything that's playable in the demo is feature-complete, including the training and the various new Return to Dark Castle rooms. It's a complete turnaround from beta 13; I thought RoTC was dead, but apparently not! I noticed one small control scheme difference from the original Dark Castle and Beyond Dark Castle (if you are pushing up + one direction, Duncan^WBryant will continue up stairs in the other direction as well), which is admittedly minor and easy to adjust to. What may be really hard to get used to, though, is that all the rooms from the original Dark Castle and Beyond Dark Castle are colorized, and the sounds have also been updated (when Duncan^WBryant runs across different kinds of ground, the sound his steps make are different), and the three episodes in the Dark Castle series are somewhat integrated via the various ante rooms, which is interesting but well-done. If you're just looking for nostalgia, you can easily run the original versions of Dark Castle and Beyond Dark Castle (in their pristine black and white glory) using Mini vMac. But if you want a modern version, Return to Dark Castle (surprisingly) delivers in spades! (Version 1.1)

SIMX Do not under any circumstances try this piece of software. If it thinks you are using a pirated serial number, it will delete your entire home directory. The developer admits this in the comments at VersionTracker. See http://www.versiontracker.com/php/feedback/article.php?story=20070207124614786 and any related comments. (Version 1.85)

SIMX I've been able to reproduce this bug -- it is at the top of our list of Mac fixes. (Version 1.6.170)

SIMX I will re-try the latest version of D2X-XL on the MacBook and MacBook Pro that I have access to, but if this is a problem that's specific to Mac Pros, then I don't know if I'm going to be able to fix it in a reasonable amount of time. (I may have to go to an Apple Store to test this out.) (Version 1.6.170)

SIMX What the heck does "it does not work" mean. If you're having a problem, it'd be nice if you'd report it. (Version 1.0.3)

SIMX Have you dumped all the textures in the Data folder, or have you created a subfolder called Textures in the data folder and dumped them in there? (Version 1.6.130)

KARX11ERX If unzipping the textures, be aware that they are already zipped with a subfolder 'textures', so unzipping to e.g. c:\descent\textures will put them in c:\descent\textures\textures (WinXP type folder names, but I guess you get the point). Turn off folder usage when unzipping or unzip to your main Descent folder. (Version 1.6.130)

SIMX Mmhmm, Stuffit has been able to make and expand self-extracting archives for a while now. As for the hi-res textures, yes, those work already too. :) You need to put a "-hires_textures 1" line in your d2x.ini file. Also, go to [Configure --> Miscellaneous] and make sure "Show Expert Options" is on. Then go to [Configure --> Render Options --> Advanced Render Options] and make sure the render and texture quality are set to high. (Version 1.6.130)

SIMX The .exe files should be expanded by Stuffit Expander; the .exe files are not the level files themselves. I tested out the file from Encounter at FarPoint 2 -- once expanded with Stuffit, the required eaf2.hog and eaf2.mn2 files can be placed in the required folder. I tested the map, and it works with D2X-XL on the Mac. (Version 1.6.122)

SIMX Custom levels are never in .exe format. There are usually two files (a .hog and a .mn2) for custom levels and they should work fine. Descent 1 levels should also work fine -- if they do not, please post a bug report at http://www.descentbb.net/ in the D2X-XL forum. (Version 1.6.122)

Lostify | Mar 22 2006 |
SIMX Ugh. Lostify is nice in that it lets you set video tags, but it's interface is utterly horrid. It only shows you the info for one video at a time, so if you want to batch modify certain info, you have to use the kludgy "locking" mechanism -- you lock certain fields, and the locked values will be retained when you open the info window for the next video. Furthermore, once Lostify finishes processing all files in a batch (which you have to drag to the Lostify icon in the Dock), the app quits! That's really annoying! The creator of this app seriously needs to take a class in interface design. It's annoying, and it really makes me not want to use this app. I'll come back once Lostify starts using a list, can do batch processing without a kludgy interface, and doesn't automatically quit after processing. SIMX Um, version 1.5.86 no longer contains a disk image inside a disk image. That only occurred with the previous version. (Version 1.5.86)

SIMONE Actually what johnnycat said is incorrect. You hold down play/pause while pressing the up/down volume buttons, not the back/forward buttons. In any case, it's a great improvement. (Version 1.0.4)

SIMONE MANGANELLI OK, guys. If SBE isn't working, you've gotta send me an e-mail. An obscure comment on MacUpdate saying that it just doesn't work won't help me in figuring out the problem. Because bookmark file formats change often, I keep SBE constantly updated. So please send me an e-mail at simX [at] mac [dawt] com if SBE isn't working for you. (BTW, it works for me with Firefox 1.0, or I would've fixed the problem by now.) (Version 1.0.8)

SIMONE MANGANELLI This is the awesomest IM client I have ever used. It will never come off, even when Apple finally releases Jaguar with iChat. Proteus just rocks everything else, and blows all other IM clients out of the water 10 times over. It IS WORTH IT TO GET THIS CLIENT. (Version 2.0b3)
