Screenshots Preference Pane
Aug 1 2009
****.

SHAWNB  I've been using this little pref pane utility on my macs for a long time now and I don't see why everyone gives it such a hard time. It works great and is mondo fast and easy to use

Yes I know it only takes 2 lines in terminal to do the same thing. But when you are in a hurry and don't keep the EXACT terminal commands memorized all the time, and have to go to a mac help site and look them back up everytime. With this it is MUCH faster to just click on Settings and then the Screentshots item and change them with your mouse and BOOM your done!

Also complaining about giving a developer a lousy $2 for something that can be done for free just doesn't make much sense to me. I just timed it and it took 3 minutes to do it the terminal way and 15 seconds to do it the Screenshots Preference Pane way. I know what my time is worth on a busy day. How about you?

SHAWNB  I had this happen to me too on my DD-WRT router and after being frustrated by it for a minute or two I decided to change the SNMP community field in the settings screen of the widget.

Even though I had my router SNMP set to public and the widget show public in the SNMP community field I erased what was there and retyped it and then went back to the widget and it all started working. I don't know why it worked after doing that but it did so give it a try!

Labels & Addresses
Dec 16 2008

SHAWNB  Well... The Mail Factory product gave you the ability to edit individual labels by clicking on the edit button when printing the sheet of labels.

This functionality no longer exists in Labels & Addresses so yes this was a 'Feature' of the Mail Factory which was REMOVED in the Labels & Addresses product.

So let me re-iterate my original complaint:

I asked you to make this function BETTER in a newer version of the Mail Factory so that it wasn't such a kludge to use and instead you REMOVED this feature, discontinued the product AND want me to pay for a new version that has LESS functionality than that of the software I paid for.

How does this seem right?

P.S. The money is irrelevant. Charge whatever you want for it and if it does what I want I will pay for it. BUT, if it doesn't do what I need it to do it is of no use to me and will not get my money.

Labels & Addresses
Dec 15 2008

SHAWNB  Mail Factory was great and getting better all the time. I had even asked the developer to move the 'Print Multiple Designs' feature from their Business Card Composer product over to this software so that I could print several different styles of mailing labels on one sheet. Like Christmas, Halloween, 4th of July all with my same return address, etc. on one single sheet of labels and that way I wouldn't have the wasted labels I do now.

BUT... Then they released this crap (Labels & Addresses) which actually REMOVES functionality that I previously was using in Mail Factory. WTF?!?

AND get this! Now they want me to PAY them $25 to UPGRADE to this inferior software after already plunking down $80 for their Prinfolio Suite?!?

NO, I don't think so! And I will start looking for another product and publisher that actually listens to their customers, not ignores them regarding added functionality for their products.

It's too bad really, I was very fond of their products and company until this. I still like their CD Labeling and Business Card Creator products.

SHAWNB  Well I couldn't pay him for this so I registered his Screen Recycler software instead (which I don't use). Yes it's that good! Thanks and keep up the good work!

SHAWNB  Here is something else you may not have thought about regarding the purchase of the bundle...

Do you already own several of the things in the bundle? Yeah I did too. So I figured that I would just give away the licenses to the software that I had already bought before hand that I got with the bundle to my friends and/or family that could use them. You do have all of your friends and/or family converted to mac's by now right?

Any two items in the bundle that you can use is worth far more than the price of the whole thing anyway!

Just Do It! Be Like Mike! Or Steve, or Avi, or Joe, or Max. You get the point!

SHAWNB  Intaglio... So close we can taste it.

Think of intaglio like this. A young version of Adobe Illustrator and Corel Draw wrapped up in one very responsive tiny little app that will let you draw vectorized crop circles on your screen to your hearts content!

Well not having an artistic bone in my body does not help here but I do use it for network diagrams, origami creations and cool new paper airplane creations with flames on them!

Hehe, you weren't expecting that last bit were you!

A shout out to all my MacHomies! Just cause that's the way I roll... Peace! I'm out!

Well no just one more thing...

Visualize whirled peas!

SHAWNB  You guys and gals are keeping up here aren't you? I'm not writing too fast for you or anything am I?

Little Snitch also known as the idiot app that the boneheads at apple forgot to include in OS X but should have.

This is the second part of your firewall solution for OS X. OS X does great at blocking incoming connections to your machines but not outgoing.

Now you may be asking yourself, but duh ralph we're not all software pirates floating on the high seas so why would we need something silly like that! Well let me 'splain it to you! Let's say someone did by chance write a piece of software for the mac that was very virus or spyware like and somehow you got it on your machine somehow and so it started gathering all of your financial data (bank, stocks, etc.) off of your computer and sending it to kerfunkle.arghmaties.com so an evildoer(c) could maybe transfer all the funds from your bank account to theirs. How would you know or stop it. LittleSnitch of course! It won't let anything off your computer and onto the internet you don't specifically ok to go out. Worth it's weight in gold for a number of reasons. Already own it? But using it on more than one system cause you know you can with the same serial. Buy it again you silly geeks! "It Just Works!"

NEXT-> Intaglio! Yeah you all know we are going to get it. It's just too close not too at this point!

SHAWNB  Ok I've been using GraphicConverter for about a year now and the thing I use it most for is the one click 'convert to another graphic format' automator action that it let me put in my right click (context) menu. It's nice to have a directory of gif's, jpg's, tiff's, and with one click convert them all to png's! As to the more advanced features I don't use them real often but I have changed the color depth (True Color to 256 Color or Greyscale) a few times and it seems to work great for that too. For me though I mainly use it as a Graphic Converter. I know it sounds silly that a program called that could actually be used to do that.

NeXT-> Hey wasn't that a computer company? Yeah maybe... NEXT-> Little Snitch

SHAWNB  Hehe you thought I was going to skip FETCH didn't you? Nope! I just thought I would throw in a curve ball there.

Here is my take I have used both Fetch and Transmit a fair amount and if you are coming from the PC world of FTP programs I think you will like Fetch better than Transmit. However if you like the whole 'it just works' philosophy of the mac and want most of the advanced features hidden you will like Transmit better. Transmit is ftp for dummies and Fetch is FTP for sysadmins. Get it? Good! Cause I'm not sure I understand it all either.

SHAWNB  Yes, I know that I skipped Profcast. Sorry as I've never used it or any other screencast tool. I'm sure if you need to do screencasts you will love it.

On to Amadeus, well my wife loves the movie and the soundtrack... Oh wait, that wasn't what the review was supposed to be about was it?

I'd never tried it before today but this morning I had a need to pare done a couple of mp3 songs into much smaller loops as ringtones for my cell phone and it was very fast and proficient at that task! Star Wars ringtones anyone? ;-)

SHAWNB  Cocktail: well actually I'm not too fond of this one and actually like Onyx better. It seems to do the same things as Onyx does just not in as concise a way as I like. For either I like to just jump in and click the clean and optimize my system with one button click and I just like the way Onyx does this more than Cocktail. I don't really use all the hide/unhide features that both offer so maybe someone else can comment as to that stuff.

SHAWNB  Garagesale! Do you ebay? If so the bundle is worth the price for this app alone! I find it way nicer than it's competitor iSale and I did use them both for a couple of months before this bundle was available so no bias here.

I find the templates a little less flashy than iSale's are and for me that is a good thing. Most ebay auction item buyers want a clean and to the point auction without all the flashy crap that hides the meat and potato's of the auction which is the text description and some nice photos and GarageSale does a wonderful job of this!

SHAWNB  Hmm, well someone asked if someone would post about the apps in the bundle so here goes. SRS iWow is pretty neat! I'd never tried it before I got in in the bundle. It does a nice job at making your teeny tiny desktop speakers in your mac or slightly larger third party speakers sound much larger and it enhances away most of the compression artifacts that we hear in compressed music these days like lost high end headroom. DVD Releases Widget
Feb 6 2007

SHAWNB  Ok please forgive my idiocy above and replace all occurances of IMDB.com with movies.yahoo.com.

I think I must have just been looking at a review at IMDB.com when I wrote the comments in my previous posting. I actually meant to say add Yahoo Movie Reviews at movies.yahoo.com as an option instead of just the amazon reviews as I like them better. IMDB reviews would be great as well, but would still not give me the big red rent from Netflix button I am looking for.

Thanks!

DVD Releases Widget
Feb 6 2007

SHAWNB  I like this widget. The little DVD spin at startup is a nice touch. It also seems to have some nice features. I like the DVD cover art as well.

A couple of things I would like to see added:

Add more review sites like IMDB as well as Amazon.

I am sure you are using Amazon's click through feature so that you get commissions to help pay for the widget and that is great but I like one button add to my Netflix Queue which only a site like IMDB.com offers. Plus I trust the reviews at IMDB more than Amazon's reviews.

I'd like to click on the title in your widget, be taken to IMDB.com for the review of the movie, peruse the review and click the big red NETFLIX button if I like it well enough to add to my Queue.

Also offering the ability to choose your sort order would be nice. Sort by release date, alphabetical, or movie rating would be nice as well.

All in all though still a very nice dashboard widget and a welcome addition to my dashboard.
