SEMIOTICMONKEY  The idea seems smart: Combine multiples SSB in one window. But has some problems:

a) don't let the user decide wich modules are activated. Ie, you are forced to have a tab for ecommerce even if you don't have a need for it.

b) It is not clear (UI side) the workflow of the note and todos panels. Why do you need to have context for notes? why do you need context for todos (no errands)?

c) no site specific refresh intervals. You don't need to refresh your blog (or paypal or rss) every 3 minutes as twitter, of course.

Put some customizations power inthere. Let the user activate only what he really needs (or/and add his customized tabs) and you'll have something with a specific niche but useful.

SEMIOTICMONKEY  Well, my experience:

Copy of 17GB of multiple files to old Ext FW HD:

NTFS-3G: 18 minutes.

Not so shabby, imho. I mean, so much it depends on your config and the test you run. Try to test both sw with multiple files, with a plenty of RAM and a FW HD to see how they works.

SEMIOTICMONKEY  Good shot but it has a long way to go before becoming usable as my twitter client of choice.

Can we have the possibility to choose from system fonts for the tweet list?

Can we have a post tweet box resizeble (and more differed from the list)?

Can we have the timestamp in a font size differed from the tweet text?

I can go on and on. As you can see are all UX/UI problems. The mainframe is there. It lacks a proper UI.

I like it as a barebones twitter client and i hope in some of the above improvements.

Keep the good work.

SEMIOTICMONKEY  Good integration but it lacks some features:

!important: no duplicate check. If you bookmark a page already bookmarked, delicioussafari doesn't warn you and post the bookmark again and again (Pukka warns you)

No way to permanently check private post. You have to hit the checkmark every time (important. Pukka does the same)

Selected text from the page bookmarked doesn't automatically fill the text field in the new bookmark panel (again Pukka fills that information for you automatically).

Pro over Pukka:

Integration

No bias here cause i'm testing both for buying, so i'm considering my workflow and these two options i found, between all those present, the only viable solutions (apart for cocoalicius)

ps. consider change icon in safari toolbar and make it more consistent with the UI.

BLODWYN  Sure you can. Just highlight the files with the tag you want to edit/delete, bring up the Tags window and delete/edit the tag. You can use a Finder Spotlight search to find the files with the tag you're interested in - search for Tags>Contains>Name-of-Tag (the "Tag" can be found by selecting "Other" and then scrolling down the list to "Tags"). You can select all the files in the search window, bring up the Tags window and edit/delete them all at once.

||"Deleted the tag, the file info (comments) show the old tag still".

--> this new way of tagging is not happening through the info comment field. it is written into the extended attributes, and that is the great thing. so of course the comment field does not change, if you change the tag.

||Selected a file with a tag, you can only delete the wrong tag, not edit it. In no way this ||application permits tag editing (neverthless there is a 'edit tag' window ?:p ). You have to ||delete al the wrong tags and start over, hoping all will be ok.

if you double cklick on the tag ont the tags field, you can edit it. but you are right, the tag manger should be called tag overview, since one cant really edit tags there (yet???).

DONEBYLEE  The info provided about how to remove a tag and/or edit works fine, but it is not listed anywhere on the website or in the help files that I could find.

AND, the method is extremely poorly designed. I should be able to add, edit, manage and remove tags from within Tags itself. I should not have to use Finder/Spotlight to do this.

I would humbly suggest employing a right click (control-click) option or some scheme that allows us to manage our tags completely from within Tags.

warning. The download link is broken.

Anyway, testing high and low, i found no way to import a OPML (flat or structured) into this thing.

Yes, there is an 'Import' menu but...you are asked to register an OPML file NOT to open one.

Bah!

No Drag and drop of Feeds from Mail/NNW to Headline (single file or multiple files).

Animation, yada yada and then the Usability ABC isn't there. Who did the design of this Application from usability POV? Fire him!

URL Copy and pasting from NNW result in a malformed URL in the Headline URL field. You have to remove the (unnecessary) trailing space from the URL to get Headline to recognize it.

After all this, Headline goes in a wonderful loop trying to validate the URL. I'm here from 5 minutes waiting this damned dialog box to activate the OK button.

As you can see for yourself (in the shot), the Feed's titles are often truncated so you have to enlarge the window to accomodate a quick eye scrolling. In this way, the entire UI fill almost the same screen space of, say, NF. Another Usability fault. Good in a shot, bad in everyday workflow.

And so on and on.

Stick with NNW/NF/Mail. Free, Usable applications and save your money for something valuable.

SEMIOTICMONKEY  Well, i don't know you but i'm downloading right now the trial to see what's changed cause the comments below are the same old adagio about Quark out of biz yada yada and nothing to do with the version 8.0.

Have you tried this before comment on it?

It works? It is better than 7.0? And so on. The preferred DTP sport, Quark bashing, is now too old.

Judging by on line reviews and from the version changes it seem it is now offering a bunch of good features.

All i can honestly say, without tried it out, is about its price. Here in Europe it costs 1.300 euros VAT excluded and it is way too much (WTF about Adobe and Quark charging so much we europeans? Protectionism at its worse).

Just for clarity but we are still waiting proper fixes from Adobe for the silly bloated Indesign so stop to glorify it cause it have its flood of faults and quirks not fixed and waiting in line for the next CS4. After that, we will be waiting for the CS5 and so on and on.

Aug 3 2008

DONMONTALVO  This isn't about bashing QuarkXPress. This is about spreading the word that Quark (the company) is milking Tim Gill's hard work. The bugs and issues we've reported over the years have NOT been resolved.

Caching/temp file routine is STILL unmanageable - we've asked for a temp directory pref and never got it so QuarkXPress documents go south in many Xinet/Helix environments ; lack of *.plist mean inability to push defaults commands which is a huge step back in production environments; I can go on...but why bother.

The simple fact of the matter is people need to be warned. Do NOT spend money on QuarkXPress until you've done your homework - get in touch with the folks who manage large production environments to get the untainted truth. Call the schools (who are pushing InDesign heavily). Call the recruiters (who have an overage of overpaid QuarkXPress experts, but can't keep up with the demand for InDesign pros.

Please...let's not get into a food fight. Just make a few calls and get the truth. And, for the record, if you're looking for work in NYC, you better get up to speed on InDesign. Those production environments that haven't made the switch are quietly working on getting switched over as I type.

Aug 5 2008

SEMIOTICMONKEY  Let me be clear. I'm using Indesign from version 1.0. Yes, from day one on freelance projects (Quark on studio projects). So i know the pros and cons of Indesign versus Quark.

I'm simply stating the futility of comments Quark bashing on a new (e revamped) version. These comments give us no real info about the software in the actual state but all the so famous Quark (Devs) problems. You all are right about the Quark (Devs) but now we need to know if and how somethig is changed in Quark (SW). I don't believe is a good choice to have no choice but the Adobe Behemoth that, btw, is full occupied charging you for bug fixes in Indesign (and the all CS) from so much time (Illy crashing all the time anyone? Install Air from Admin account? Acrobat costing the same amount on Win and Mac despite the fact there is a module not bundled with the Mac version, and so on).

It is better for us, consumer, to have real competition.

ps. the DTP arena is always too monolithic in its choice. Or ID or Quark.

Gets a bit of life from the Web world (or the 3D world). There are so many ways to accomplish your homework. The right tool for the job not the one ring to rule them all approach is something DTP is unwilling to learn.

Oh, btw i'm not willing to take a software only cause it is in a bundle if (IF) there is something better out there. It costs more? Well, i must consider the ROI not the initial cost for a more mature decision.

Media Catalog
May 12 2008
***..

SEMIOTICMONKEY  In my opinion this trial version is a bit too much crippled and renders the trial period unusable.

First, you are limited to 5 media in the catalog. How i'm supposed to see if it fits my need with, say, 300+ media?

Second, it keeps popping its register screen on every start up. It is like a clerk continuously remembering you need to buy the book you are flipping through if you want to read it all. I know that! Leave me alone reading here and there to see if it is an interesting reading!

Feature wise, has some quirks which need attention.

It is not keyboard friendly and so you need to switch to the mouse to move from the task pane to the main form.

For a strange reason it is not coming with any result if you use wildcards.

It has a strange delay between the media eject and the aplication updating itself with new media indexed.

All in all, it is a good application but i keep testing alternative in search for the better fit for my bucks.

At this time, i'm more oriented to buy CDFinder (i'm trying it and it is keeping me nervous with the same absurd remainder behavior. What gives with the media cataloging software Developers?!).

Times
May 3 2008
**...

SEMIOTICMONKEY  Let me divide three kind of arguments.

a) workflow

I have to quote FRIDGE here and, indeed, this application has serious usability problems, Seems as it was designed by someone not used to the RSS world and use.

A GUI is not eyecandy only but an effective and down to the task at hand design. Good icons, beautiful details are welcome, we are all on a Mac after all, but all these must adhere to a logical process as it can predicted by simulations of everyday use of the average users. This is the center of users centric design.

This applications lacks all of these above.

You can't see, immediately see, which news are new. The simple red pillow is something good on a page with 3/4 elements but it pass by unnoticed in a page full of articles. A bold headline, as newspaper, could be a better sign.

You have to read the news before the refresh cause there is no way to keep them in a unread status between session.

The refresh and mark as read task is a All or None matter. You can't refresh or mark as read a single page or article. All or Nothing. Stupid (sorry but it is true).

Read the review below for further strange behaviors.

Maybe the next updates will change something of these but right now you have to deal with it in a current state and pay in the hope of changes.

b) optimization

It consumes after a fresh start 60MB RAM. After an hour of activity, it pumps up at 140MB RAM. This is simply unaccetable (NetNewsWire eats 23MB RAM). C'mon it consume more RAM than Photoshop with a full website mockup loaded!

c) price

Oh well! It is the price the Dev choosed so stop complaying. In my opinon it not worth of the price requested BUT, at a lower price AND in this state, i still will not consider buy it, so...

ps. Don't try to Trim The Fat (or Xslimmer it) from this application. It will crash on startup indefinitely.

psII. Stability wise, on my Machine it worked fast and well (MacBook last gen with 4GB RAM and Leo 10.5.2).

SEMIOTICMONKEY  two things merely about usability and user experience design:

a) the site is totally a mess. navigate in search of info about you and your software is a guess game. The stupid menu (dock like) is the worse offender but the page menu is even worse (with that Helvetica 12 clashing with the rest). Please, consider clean up your 'personal home page' and give it a more professional looking, usable and customer centric layout If you want to charge 79$ for your application. Don't understimate your 'client'.

b) the same for the application.

b1 - The stupid widgetesque splash is irritable. The user begin to work with the splash still waving around. Shut the splash down. It doesn't give me useful info making only noise.

b2 - The icons (both the App Icon and the toolbar icons) are toonish and perception disturbing. Stick with the OS X color palette and integrate your app with the rest of OS X world.

The Ugly

Why on heart it is mandatory to give the database name on a new connection?

The Bad

The Sql editor doesn't follow the selected table. You have to manually clean up each and every time the editor to start writing.

Always the SQL editor doesn't autocomplete fields in a given table.

Always the SQL editor doesn't have collapsed region (ala Database Spy)

When an error in the statement occurred, we have a disturbing popup window. give contextual information in context without using popups (as everywhere in OS X - check mail, TextMate and the likes)

After a statement error, the table selection reset itself. (!?)

The infuriating behavior

The SQL editor insists on operate on the database selected in the connection panel ignoring the user choice. If you switch to another database (the application permits it and there is a Select menu), the SQL editor doesn't follow you. But the commit button yes. This inconsistency is the worse thing in this application. Choose a behavior and stick with it. Or no operation at all on databases other than the choosen one, OR all operations permitted. And, please, make the stupid SQL editor follow the user and not the application.

suggestions:

smart folders to store e retrieve sql staments on a given table.

All in all i like your application. It is a good starting point. But if you compare to the professional competitors, as Altova Database Spy or Navicat, priced in the same price range or above, it gives no distinct feature set to justify the price. Lower it and i'll consider buy it and use it instead of terminal.

If you use MySQL, continue to use the Terminal or CocoaMySQL.

If you need Oracle support, give it a try.

The second monitor doesn't see the plugged monitor immediately. You have to close Sys Pref and reopen it to force iTheater to recognize it.

The uninstaller (the Automator workflow) doesn't works. So i ended up searching all the frameworks it installs in Library and clean up eveything.

Kudos to the Devs to build a native OSX version well tought and tailored to the Mac GUI and workflow (compare it to the Win version to see how they have choosed differents paths for the Mac version to make it fit nicely to the OS).

The price is truly too high alas. A 'express' (not so stripped, tought) version in a more affordable price tag would appeals more customer and spread the brand and the use of it and challenge Filemerge users like me.

SEMIOTICMONKEY  So, after so much anticipation here it is.

What set it apart from competitors?

Nothing.

The features are there but some bugs still too.

The back/forward buttons for example doesn't work always (sometimes yes. sometimes no).

It crashed on my first launch and attempt to customize the toolbar.

Same as above on my first click on the 'add bookmark' button.

The search doesn't works.

No other view but list view without the option (as the open source Cyberduck) to open folders from within the list (you have to enter the directory).

No dual pane (of course. it is trendy now, it seems).

A bunch of animations.

No way to setup multiple editors to use (as in Cyberduck, again).

Simple to use and to setup.

Clean GUI (not like the terrible CaptainFTP and, to some extend, Yummy FTP)

Price on par (or more than) with commercial competitors (Cyberduck apart).

Good to have a new kid on the block. i'm little pissed cause the hype has promised so much and then delivered what i already have (nearly).

Keep up the good work and improve it. It can compete with Transmit, Forklift and Cyberduck. Only not now.

VERYCARLA  I really wish egotistical programmers would stop trying to hype their apps. Inevitably there's some problem with the 1.0 of the app and then the hype turns into backlash.

Flow sure does look nice, but it's not going to replace Yummy FTP for me any time soon. If they can get WebDAV working I'll consider it. Otherwise, forget it. I want apps that WORK, not apps that look flashy.

Outspring Mail
Apr 2 2008
*....

SEMIOTICMONKEY  Tried out in search of a meaning to the price.

Something to point out:

Searching high and low, i didn't find the way to set up the check mail interval. It insists pulling the server without a way to stop it. Please, gimme back my options.

No way to save all the attachments or preview them as in mail.app. You have to 'download' (?!) them one by one.

It puts a stupid 'This message has been sent with Outspring Mail. Please visit.... yada yada' footer on every message you write. No way to delete it from the message. It is possible to remove it once registered? it is a trial version? if yes, gimme the full trial period!

It doesn't remember previous state. You have to click everytime to select the last mailbox and/or the last message seen.

the Task pane HUD goes out of screen instead of switching opening direction.

Application icon poorly designed (look at it with Quicklook or command+tab)

Task pane icons OS 9 era.

Sort toolbar icons not in Apple HIG compliance (and poorly designed). Please use Apple standard GUI elements.

95$?! Maybe 5$. Maybe. Mail.app over this every day.

SEMIOTICMONKEY  There is something wrong with this price tag.

I can buy a complete PIM (Entourage, Contactizer etc with mail client integrated or integration with Apple stuff) with the same or less money (The entire Microsoft Office Suite Home Edition costs more or less the same amount).

If you charge so much be sure to give back something that works. It is a minimum required.

On a side note: spend something on your site (the stock Joomla! theme is a cheap option) and in marketing effort (some screenshots maybe? a guided tour illustrating all the features? a clearly stamped price? and so on).

SEMIOTICMONKEY  let me suggest the addition of a useful feature.

'open invisible files'.

cvs puts his old working copy as invisible file and the option to open it directly from Changes would be a welcome addition.

same rating as my previous review as nothing changed (no pun intended) from the last time.

****.

SEMIOTICMONKEY  the foundation version i tried out has, in 6.0.7, still the spaces bug (as 6.0.6). every time you switch to smartcvs on command+tab, it don't holds focus. No way to wake up it from his catatonia without switching manually to its assigned workspace.

the same don't happens when in dock minimized state.

in this version finally it sticks with the color theme preference (no more blue scroolbars when you have graphite).

features wise it is a very good client (yep. on Mac it is a godsend. No tortoiseCVS here and you are in the cold if you don't want to install the entire apple developer tools only to have this little damned cvs client, via devtool or fink or macports it doesn't matter). i still use Eclipse (cvs+diff+merge) cause the spaces bug slow down my work habits. Anyway i suggest you to try it out to check if it fills your need.

SEMIOTICMONKEY  nothing beats this at css editing (TopStyle, i look at you).

all the features you need to get the work done in a small, well tought package.

the x-ray window is the right tool for the dynamic pages work. i'm using right now on a velocity-tomcat project and it is a god send. no more firebug and refresh to see the tweaks in real time.

the autocomplete is good and the style preview 'drawer' is a welcome and useful bonus. you can drag and drop styles to arrange them in a organized way (layout, tipography, forms and so on). in this it beats the poor coda's csseditor.

but i have a little remark. i would prefer the option to hide the styles preview drawer.

i bought it before the trial period was over.

SEMIOTICMONKEY  good GUI on top of the trim command. simple, effective, no frills and free.

One window, drag application, done. No buttons to push, no icons. You can't batch operations (as Xslimmer does), but it is not a real problem after all.

start fast.

maybe some preferences about the language to keep would be a good feature.

if you want go the terminal route here is a good place to start

SEMIOTICMONKEY  on my last gen macbook 4GB RAM is slow slow slow.

sure, it is GPU oriented. Sure it could be fast with a decent GPU.

in the same time it goes full screen with a stupid 900x600px image i start photoshop, work on the same image and close eveything.

a little bit of compatibility with the actual apple lineup could be a welcome new feature for the next version, don't you think?

so in sys requirements it needs to specify:

iMac last gen, MacBook Pro, Mac Pro or better (or specify the minimum GPU required, 'certified cards', for 'normal' operations, as Autodesk Maya).

if it needs a 'Pro' Machine to run decently, it is a 'Pro' application after all. or not?

low rating because i can't try the application (everything is slow o fails to render on screen) in the appropriate mode (ad intended by devs).

so much hype for a gimp subset on a cocoa gui.

**...

SEMIOTICMONKEY  i found it too much mouse oriented for my taste.

everything needs a mouse click to work. no tabs to switch focus on a particlular field or button. in find mode (command+f) there is no automatic positioning on the search filed (lack of usability) and no way to focus on it via keyboard (what's wrong with fields in this app?).

press enter doesn't work in launching the query (you have to click on the button).

the nested info panel is barebone and poorly formatted and gives you no info about the metadata.

the info panel on command+i is slow to start and close (and keeps on hiding itself).

the preview thumb space is filled with the alwayspresentreflectionthing instead of a better thumb to look at (btw, no way to setup your thumb size).

nice try but it is long way to home. the price is not justified if you look at competitors.

Changes
Feb 1 2008
***..

SEMIOTICMONKEY  good first shot for a valuable niche but...it needs more and more features to justify the price as the optimus FileMerge is free with the Apple Dev Tools and you can, like me, use Eclipse only loaded with the CVS, SVN modules (fast loading time and central control over yours repos). Eclispe has a very good diff tool full of option and working with the local history too (apart from the repo).

Changes lacks all the bells and whistles from the duo above (integration and tools) and in this incarnation is quite a very barebone diff with the merge addon as a bonus (textwrangler has an efficient but

limited diff too. but it is free).

It needs more visual rapresentation of conflicts, more info about the files being edited and where they are and so on and less vfx (sorry, a merge tool isn't a delecious generation tool).

A more mature CM and an effective syntax coloring are welcome too.

Apart from these point i like to have a new native kid on the block cause we need more options. I believe it has all the time to grow in a more mature application as the time goes on and the dev keeps focused on features and not on vfx.

keep the good work.

SEMIOTICMONKEY  Again here we are.

repeat with me: Official Bittorrent client:

more download speed = more CPU cycles.

this applications seems CPU hungry more than Alias Maya and Photoshop combined.

45% of my PBook CPU on one (1) torrent.

More than Azureus and Bow and Trasmission and Tomato all togheter downloading.

I don't know what is wrong with this application but i know i stop here checking every new version in the hope of improvements.

bye bye Official client.

SEMIOTICMONKEY  Good for Audio Output. I'm testing right now and it works with my stereo speakers better than "airtunes" in the Audio Volume Settings. I need to say, tought, that a short delay is at work between your click on a song in iTunes and the audio output.

In no way usable with Video Files (in every form). Its delay is quite evident (about 5 seconds) and make this puppy unusable.

All in all far away from perfect but quite usable right now if you don't worry the delay and don't have plans to use it with video.

SEMIOTICMONKEY  w o n d e r f u l

Let me say a thing, first.

I hate Dashboard.

But this widget push me to use Dashboard. It is the only widget i use every day. Simple. Effective. Multipurpose.

Wonderful the Add Artwork to iTunes option. Not limited to the current song but, with an elegant overlay on the cover, it presents you an option to add the cover to the song currently playing or to all the songs in the Album.

Options to select the fetch artwork site (good choices)

And Option to drive iTunes too (mouse and hotkeys).

All this in a so small size. And...free.

Great job, indeed.

tnx so much.

Torrent Station
Jan 3 2006
**½..

SEMIOTICMONKEY  First thing first. It lacks a way to generate .torrents. So it is useless for the those who are not accustomed to the hit-and-run policy of the others p2p protocols.

In this regard it is comparable to Transmission but:

Transmission is at 0.4 release and not 1.0

Transmission is freeware

In my opinion, It is not a good idea to request a fee to give a unfinished product and this, until the dev puts the "Generate Torrent" option, is an unfinished product.

then, the GUI is a wasted screen space. To have all the info visible you have to have the window at a minimum of 640x480 and this, for all those on a 12" iBook or PowerBook is an insane request. This is valid for the others too. I suggest a GUI rethink. Something more compact. I would suppress the "Folder Pane" the utility of which i don't see.

It lacks, like the others client (except Azu), the Selective Download Option. But, again, this is not freeware so i expect somethin more than the free alternatives for my money.

It persists in not remembering the last path in the Open/Save dialog (yes, i set it up to ask everytime and not to use the defaul path)

I stop here but there would be more to say.

All in all, unimpressed. Use BOW, instead.
