SCOTTYO  This is a bit nervous-making.

Whether I download via the MacUpdate link or via the trek through Epson's US website to a download claimed to be 10.6-compatible, I get a .dmg that, when mounted, shows file dates in 2006 for everything. My Epson Scan app, downloaded months ago, has a version number of 3.2.4, but the new disk volume has "epson_scan_utility_303" in its name, which sounds familiar from 2-3 years ago. The downloaded file name is "epson12215.dmg".

I have 10.6.1 on a first-gen MacBook, and an Epson GT-X750 (Japanese branding) which Image Capture claims is a Perfection 4490, which seems correct. A bit of casual scanning did not turn up any problems with my previous driver in Elements 3, Elements 6, Epson Scan, Image Capture, or Preview, in 10.6 and 10.6.1. But of course, if the new driver has any goodies, I'd like to start using it, especially when I get back to family photo album scanning in a few months.

However, I'm going to wait and see if there are disaster reports before installing this version.

TANKKNIGHT  The EPSON website on drivers for 4490 states: epson12215.dmg - 12.2MB - posted on 03/12/07

Looks like all they did was to add that it is compatible with 10.6 in the description ... So you do not need/want this driver (my opinion).

SCOTTYO  Re: blank white roofs, etc: Recent vintages of GE can display 3D buildings, if someone has made a model of them. There are 2 flavours lately, Photorealistic and Gray. Sounds like you have Gray (and maybe Photorealistic too; most buildings in Tokyo for example, have only gray renderings, but the important ones often have very nice photorealistic renderings) turned on.

Look in the Layers list, near the top, for 3D buildings, and uncheck the box (if it's a dash, only one of the two styles is on, and a click will turn it off).

It's a very nice feature when you're looking at the big city, but not everywhere has (much of) it, and it slows things down too.

GARY30  Thank you Scottyo. In 5.0 these layer options either were not present or had no effect. By turning off the Photorealistic and the Gray checkboxes under 3D Buildings in 5.1's Layers list, the tops of the buildings show as photographed which is what I prefer to view.

SCOTTYO  I see that in an earlier comment (2007) you mention using zerolink (dropping it actually) in your code, which I believe is Xcode-only. Are you no longer using Xcode?

Xcode makes it easy to create a single app bundle with binaries for both architectures, which is the usual solution to the problem of supporting 2 architectures. This is generally the "least surprise" solution for Mac users.

SCOTTYO  I'll install this when it doesn't use an Installer. The File menu of Installer shows that this install shows only files in the app bundle as I expected. This is good.

So why an installer?

This is bad. Not needed.

I quit the installer without installing.

I dislike simple apps delivered by installer.

CPERRA  I chose to use the Installer because I have 2 seperate binaries. One for Leopard, one for Tiger, and the Installer chooses between them intelligently. Worse comes to worse, you could contact me for a Zip of the app.

Thanks

SCOTTYO  At least they provide a rev number, but without associated notes (which MacUpdate invariably posts, when/if they're available, good stuff!) I'm not inclined to install it. Going to the MacUpdate-listed developer website, I see no sign of release notes; matter of fact, this appears to be a developer-oriented site, everything focussed on the API. Not really suitable for general users.

C'mon Google, tell us more about what's happening with this plugin!

Apple Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update
Dec 18 2008

SCOTTYO  In your Requirements section, it might be worth mentioning that it requires Aperture 2 or iPhoto 7.1.2 or newer. Could save a lot of unnecessary and disappointing downloads. And questions on the forums.

I wish Apple would note the REAL requirements instead of just "10.4.11 or 10.5.3 or later"

VelaClock

SCOTTYO  This is a comment about VelaClock in general: I am really pleased with this product. It does what it is designed to do, and meets my needs very well. We live in Tokyo (where my wife's relatives are); our children are in KY, U.S.A. and Canberra, Australia; and my own parents and relatives live in Winnipeg, Canada. I can keep track of "Now" for all these folks in a glance with VelaClock.

This is a comment on the latest update: though it took a bit longer than I hoped, I have received free an update that works well with Safari beta 3.02, as promised.

I heartily recommend VelaClock.

BTW, a feature I would love to see (in the non-Deluxe version) is the ability to input a future time/date for any of the active time zones and see it reflected in all the others, as a way to simplify scheduling of iChats, phone calls, etc.

SCOTTYO  This is one of my favourite examples of a"perfect app": it's unobtrusive when you're not using it, but springs into action effortlessly when you summon it up. The sparse feature set is very well chosen (though I still hope for scaling, a la Meander, someday), and the operational model—for example not becoming foreground app till you click on the Measure panel—makes it a pleasure to use.

SCOTTYO  Unfortunately there seem to be 2 major flaws with this program AFAIAC:

- with the Fr-En, En-Fr dictionaries enabled, I typed garcon (no cedilla on the c, but should work anyway, I'd expect), pressed Return - the word that it defined was garage, not garcon. Looks like even if I fully type a word, I need to pick it from the list that shows up when typing. I don't know of any other Mac program that does this

- the web page with instructions, etc is almost unreadable, tiny font with gray text on a black background. Didn't feel like copy/pasting it to TextEdit and manipulating till it was readable. Threw the program away instead.

ROBERT  Wow, really? I recommend SuperCal.

For me the real legibility problem isn't the dark motif at all, but his choice of Courier and a very wide fixed column of text. Then there's the weak English. You'd think someone --and particularly now, a company-- making a translation product would want to nail that.
