Office Open XML File Format Converter | Oct 15 2008 |
SCOTTISHWILDCAT "allows you to convert Open XML files that were created in Office 2008 for Mac or Office 2007 for Windows so that you can open, edit, and save them in earlier versions of Office for Mac." Where does it say anything about TextEdit or Pages? (Version 1.0.1)

BBC iPlayer Downloader | Oct 1 2008 |
SCOTTISHWILDCAT There's nothing the application can do about that. The BBC's servers block http access to iPlayer from non-UK ISPs. Your only hope is to find a web proxy based in the UK and go through that (but the BBC are getting wise to that, too). (Version 2.1)

SCOTTISHWILDCAT Why would you pay for this when you can do it with Automator for free? (And probably Preview too, in Leopard.) (Version 3.6.8.1)

VirtualBox | Sep 4 2008 |
SCOTTISHWILDCAT Certainly some nice enhancements in 2.0, for Mac users... the native interface isn't much to write home about, but full screen mode works a lot better (especially with Spaces/Expose), and seamless mode now works properly on secondary displays. Not being limited to NAT networking any more is cool, too.. (Version 2.0)

SCOTTISHWILDCAT I'm not sure which is scarier... the fact that somebody can charge $100 for this, or the fact that any school would use iWeb as a way to teach web design. (Version 2.0)

VectorDesigner | Aug 13 2008 |
SCOTTISHWILDCAT Great little lightweight vector design tool, but (for my purposes) let down by poor quality of SVG imports. LineForm costs roughly the same amount and imports even complex SVGs perfectly, but has a less polished UI. I guess I'll be sticking with the (free) Inkscape.app for now, which has the advantage of saving natively to SVG too... (Version 1.4.2)

StarOffice | Aug 5 2008 |
SCOTTISHWILDCAT No, StarOffice 9 includes some proprietary technologies that aren't in OpenOffice 3.0, so Sun has to charge for those. Other than that, the two products will be mostly identical. (Version 9.0b)

SCOTTISHWILDCAT (MBP, 10.5.3) Install the huge download, select File->New... nothing happens, except that it crashes a couple of minutes later. Waste of time and effort. (Version 1.0)

OpenOffice.org | Jun 10 2008 |
SCOTTISHWILDCAT There's also an Aqua version of OpenOffice that doesn't require X11. http://porting.openoffice.org/mac/download/aqua.html (Version 2.4.1)

OpenOffice.org | Jun 10 2008 |
SCOTTISHWILDCAT On the other hand, OpenOffice runs a lot quicker than NeoOffice, for me at least. So the Aqua version is a very welcome addition to the list of choices. (Version 2.4.1)

SCOTTISHWILDCAT Ok, I spoke too soon... it downloaded lots of nice .mov files for me, but neither QuickTime nor VLC can play them. VLC's error is "mp4: MP4 plugin discarded (no moov box)", QuickTime just says it's not a movie file. Am I missing something...? (Version 1.1)

SCOTTISHWILDCAT Works very nicely so far, just wish I'd known about this last month when I was desperately faffing around trying to hook up my virtual Windows machine (running in VMware) to my telly to watch a couple of programmes before they expired! (Version 1.1)

VirtualBox | Jun 6 2008 |
SCOTTISHWILDCAT Can't you set the resolution to whatever you like just by making the guest window bigger? I have a Solaris VM quite happily occupying all of my 1920x1200 24" monitor here in 1.6.2... (Version 1.6.2)

SCOTTISHWILDCAT VirtualBox is free, and it's just as easy to use as VMWare or Parallels. (Version 2.3.7)

SCOTTISHWILDCAT If you believe that, then I'm afraid you're sadly mistaken... however, using srm instead of rm will do the trick. (Version 5.8.2)

iTimeMachine | Jan 14 2008 |
SCOTTISHWILDCAT All this app does is turn on a preference that Apple have hidden and turned off by default. The reason it's off by default is that it has serious bugs-- I have colleagues who have (completely) trashed their backup disks using it, when turned on. (Version 1.1)

iStabilize | Dec 12 2007 |
SCOTTISHWILDCAT Have to agree. I've been trying to get it to do something, anything useful all morning, and so far haven't got it to do anything. The documentation, especially the Quick Start guide, is awful. (Version 2.2.3)

CUPS | Nov 24 2007 |
SCOTTISHWILDCAT Since Apple bought CUPS earlier this year, why should we have to download somebody else's version any more? (Version 1.3.4)

CUPS | Dec 24 2007 |
JCRAIG You don't need to, as Apple will add the necessary CUPS update to a future Software Update. Doesn't mean the developer can't announce the immediate availability of updates though (this is for Unix too after all). Trust Software Update. As long as you don't do something stupid like delete Receipts from your System, Software Update will usually know what your system needs. (Version 1.3.5)

RealPlayer | Nov 16 2007 |
SCOTTISHWILDCAT It may feel like one, but it sure doesn't look like one-- I hope they manage to put a more Cocoa-like UI on the main player window before it's done. It's a real 1990's Motif/Windows 3.1 flashback at the moment. (Version 11.0 Beta (build 631))

NeoOffice | Nov 15 2007 |
SCOTTISHWILDCAT This will probably come as news to the many companies and government administrations who are running StarOffice or OpenOffice on all their machines... http://www.news.com/2100-1001-949913.html http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1895,1637434,00.asp http://www.zdnet.com.au/insight/soa/Linux-StarOffice-slash-IT-costs/0,139023731,120279555,00.htm http://uk.sun.com/sunnews/success/finance/2003/115.html etc... SCOTTISHWILDCAT The native Mac port of gtk+ is well underway, that should remove the need for X11 with apps like this. http://developer.imendio.com/projects/gtk-macosx (Version 2.6)

Gimp.app | Oct 1 2007 |
SCOTTISHWILDCAT If you don't want to use X11, use (or write) a Cocoa app that's built on the GIMP libraries, rather than GIMP itself. That's how Adium did it. "If you build it, they will come." (Version 2.4rc3)

Parallels Desktop | Sep 7 2007 |
SCOTTISHWILDCAT Obviously enough for VMware to make the effort :) I know a couple of dozen people who run Solaris in VMware, and most of them tried Parallels first-- that sort of word of mouth can't be good for business... (Version 3.0.5158)

Parallels Desktop | Aug 3 2007 |
SCOTTISHWILDCAT +1 for VMware, especially if you're *not* running Windows in the VM-- their VMware Tools for Solaris are great (providing on-the-fly desktop resize, clock sync, drag+drop/copy+paste between OSX and the Solaris guest OS etc.), whereas Parallels provides nothing at all for Solaris. SCOTTISHWILDCAT RSS works fine here, although it's a pretty limited feature compared to standalone RSS readers like Vienna or NetNewsWire. Just choose "RSS News and Blogs" in the Create New Account window. (Version 2.0rc1)
