Apple Performance Update (Snow Leopard) | Oct 15 2009 |
ROBACKJA This is really annoying now. This package contains IOAHCIFamily.kext, I tried rebuilding the extensions cache, on Snow Leopard, `sudo touch /System/Library/Extensions` will cause the OS to rebuild the cache. Reboot. But after startup, I go through two 20+ seconds pauses. The first pause beach-balls. The second pause, the cursor remains the black pointer. After that, the pauses seem to go away. I am thinking of restoring the old driver from my time machine backup... I guess I should file a bug report with Apple. It never ends anymore.. The transition to the dark side of software is happening. haha. j/k. hopefully Apple can get this worked out (sooner than later). ROBACKJA I only ever had rare and random beach-balls (mostly during open file dialogs), installed this update, 2 15-20 seconds stalls in a matter of 5 minutes. This an anti-performance update for me. June 2009, MBP 17", 3.06Ghz/8GB RAM/160GB X-25M G2 SSD (Version 1.0)

StuffIt Expander 2010 | Sep 28 2009 |
ROBACKJA Try looking into 7za or Bzip2 compression (plenty of free tools also). ZIP is by far the worse compression (especially for things like text) but is also the most compatible. (Version 2010 14.0)

Apple iTunes | Sep 9 2009 |
ROBACKJA Carbon is only one part of being 64-bit... if you are talking about supporting 10.4. Cocoa frameworks on 10.4 are 32-bit only. In 10.4, if you wanted 64-bit application, you had to make a helper application (command line UNIX tool) that your GUI application called to. So for iTunes to be 64-bit, it has to both convert to Cocoa and drop 10.4 support at the same time. (Version 9.0)

Caffeine | Sep 4 2009 |
ROBACKJA A 30" monitor has a high resolution. Mine is 2560x1600. Things are much smaller physically on the screen. The dpi is higher than say a 24" monitor @ 1920x1200 or a 15" laptop screen @ 1440x900. So my point was, even at that DPI I am still able to see the icon clearly. and again, I like it. But its only my opinion. That is why I said it would be nice to see the icon be an option in the preferences. (Version 1.1)

ROBACKJA I'd have to say, I much rather the coffee cup icon over the ZZZ text. And thats on a 30" monitor. I could easily see the difference between white (empty) and brown (full). That being said, its all about options, and what icons someone likes someone probably hates. Maybe future versions can have both set of icons. That way if ppl are having trouble seeing the cup icon they could switch to text :) (Version 1.1)

32- or 64-bit Kernel Startup Mode Selector | Aug 25 2009 |
ROBACKJA Agreed. Plus, you are asking for donations for something that can be done easily (and quicker) via Terminal than starting up a GUI app. 1) edit the file /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist and add arch=x86_64 to the kernel flags for 64 bit and arch=i386 for 32 bit, remove arch= to reset to default. $ sudo nvram boot-args="arch=x86_64" $ sudo nvram boot-args="arch=i386" $ sudo nvram boot-args="" (Version 1.1)

BetterZip | May 29 2009 |
ROBACKJA Well, most (if not all) compression algorithms compress in chunks or blocks, bzip, gz, 7z, etc. If BetterZip used an API to extract files, for example, unrar source provides a way to build as a library, then progress could be reported on a per file basis. But I assume BetterZip just calls the UNIX command line executables, so an alternative using 2 progress bars. One overall progress, and one current file progress. Overall progress would work as it does now. Second progress would work if you knew the file size of file currently being extracted. the second progress bar could monitor the extracted size and report on individual progress. (Version 1.8.1)

ROBACKJA Let me correct myself. I apologize. I tried using only "tight low bandwidth" and apparently the GNOME remote desktop VNC server (vino) doesn't support that, so it defaulted to RAW probably. I enabled all possible encodings and my 30k/s on 1920x1200 display is back! I still hold strong on my screen resizing issue... (Version 0.96.92)

ROBACKJA Both 0.96.90 and 0.96.92 are slow and unusable compared to 0.96.86. The network transfers alone are went from 30kb/s to 300kb/s (using tight encoding). I wish I could go back to old version. Also, screen resizing, I should be able to hold "shift" or something and keep the screen aspect ratio, otherwise everything is all distorted. (Version 0.96.92)

Querious | Jan 31 2009 |
ROBACKJA I've been using Querious for about 3 weeks, maybe more. It is extremely stable. I've tried using the MySQL GUI Tools, but it was a complete joke. Navicat has a Lite version which is free and pretty nice, but the interface is quite old and a little cumbersome to use. I am very happy with it and I really look forward to future releases. And I too would rather see Postgres than MySQL 4. Legacy DB that lacks many features compared to MySQL 5.x. (Version 1.0fc1)

(One exception with 2.1.0, the 2nd half of Vista's installation did not like VT-x enabled. Leaving it disabled, it installed fine, and seems to run without issue with it enabled) (Version 2.1.2)

StuffIt Expander 2010 | Oct 10 2007 |
ROBACKJA Stuff Expander is on version 12, yet expanding a multi-part RAR file still displays horrible progress bar. Example: You have a RAR archive composed of 9 RAR files. StuffIt opens example.rar and the progress bar goes to 99% after doing example.rar, but it has 8 more RAR files to go. So it is impossible to get a read on how much longer the expansion is going to take. Please fix this. SOOO annoying. thanks (Version 12.0)

Transmission | Apr 23 2007 |
ROBACKJA Great to see open-source multi-platform application. Very simple interface. Easy to use, low memory and resource footprint. Nice changes since 0.6, some private trackers are starting to un-ban this client, but it really needs a few extras to really become a Azureus replacement. 1) Selective file downloads, meaning you can select only some of the files in the torrent for download, ignoring others 2) Have the ability to use protocol encryption 3) Ban peers sending bad data (data which fails hash checks) and not report such bad data downloads (Azureus 2.5.0.0 does not report bad data downloads, which is nice feature to help with your ratio) 4) Ability to increase re-announces to the tracker beyond lower bound. Helps with private trackers which want large timeouts between annoucements (Version 0.71)

MySQL GUI Tools | Mar 30 2007 |
ROBACKJA MySQL GUI tools have always worked for me, whether in Linux or Mac OSX. Previous versions for Mac OSX had problems with code-completion (seg faults), but it seems to be fixed in this version (although the completion list seems a bit off). Also the UI seemed to be cleaned up slightly and is definitely a useful tool. I use this program on an Intel Macbook Pro and PowerPC G5. For the person complaining about this FREE tool, if they didn't submit a bug report from mysql.com, then its their loss. This is a free tool and open-source, so testing and bug reports must come from the end-users as well for the process to work. :) (Version 5.0r11)

RosettaTest | Mar 11 2007 |
WLOGON The System-Profiler only shows, whether an application can be launched natively or as interpreted via Rosetta. On Intel machines running OSX you can choose, if you want to start an application natively or in "Rosetta-mode". This works for applications, whether they are running or not, if they are "Universal binaries". Not all are. If an application is running, 'Activity Monitor' can look into the running application, and really "sees" the mode, as does RosettaTest. The only significant difference is that the icon just pops into your eye, especially if your panel is floating, and you may avoid the overhead of 'Activity Monitor', watching disk usage, networking etc. I used some applications with plugins and drivers. They were doing just fine, except the plugins. Sometimes even 'Safari" needed 'Rosetta-mode' in order to use additional functionality. (Version 0.89)

ROBACKJA The tabs are an awesome new addition. The only remaining issue I have with SubEthaEdit is no HEREDOC string syntax support. The funny thing was, when I opened a bug on their site about it, they closed it stating, "HEREDOC not supported", like it wasn't part of the language, e.g. PHP, perl, etc. HEREDOC strings look like this (example in php):
