Evom | Nov 19 2009 |
RANDYHARRIS I've used EVOM many time now to convert a variety of source input files for use on my AppleTV. It does a very stellar job of converting the video in my opinion, drop dead simple and it just works well. End of story. No settings to fuss with, just select AppleTV and press convert. It is not a fast transcode compared to some other applications I use, but I will say that it gives a more reliable high quality transfer than the other applications so I won't complain about the slower speed - it seems to result in a more reliable transcode. Audio conversion is where EVOM is lacking. Both Handbrake and the the now deprecated VisualHUB had the ability to retain Dolby Digital 5.1 audio track by doing either a 5.1 only, or a 2.0+5.1 audio tracks in the AppleTV files. If EVOM adds this ability to do 2.0+5.1 it will become my sole application for converting video for the AppleTV. Fantastic app that is lacking just one main feature (5.1+2.0). Ideally I would love to be able to bypass the internal metatagging and have it be able to pass the file on to a tagger of your choice, in my case it's iDentify. (Version 0.97)

Garmin Communicator Plugin | Nov 11 2009 |
I don't know if it was the new Safari 4.0.4 or the new build of Communicator - but this is the first time that this plugin has ever worked for me in Safari.

Herald | Nov 10 2009 |
RANDYHARRIS I had been using Mail.Appetizer for several years and was always frustrated by how slow it was modified to work with system/Mail updates. When 10.6.2 came out the other day and Mail.Appetizer broke again without a fix I started to search to see if there may be something else that was similar. Luckily I discovered Herald. For me, Growl isn't the best Mail notification system, it can pound your screen with a ton of notices when you first log into Mail and you don't really get a chance to view them, additionally you can't mark a mail as junk, delete, etc. from the Growl notification. Herald does all of this and with a really nice translucent window, Additionally it's great having the avatar show up, I'm a visual person and instantly know who an email is from by the avatar that shows up, it's nice to not have to read who it is from even though that information is also displayed. I won't miss the old notification that I used to use. In fact I'm so tickled pink with this that I happily made a donation for the great work. It's something that I appreciate every single day I use my computer, and for that nicety I'm happy to spread a little love. (Version 1.1)

DelayedLauncher | Nov 9 2009 |
RANDYHARRIS Nice utility that I can use. 1) I'd suggest changing the "Configuration" screen's title to: "DelayedLauncher Configuration" 2) Needs an icon instead of generic App icon. 3) Please put a PAUSE button that can be pressed when setting up, when opened it wants to start launching everything. 3) Most importantly, it would be great if each item could have it's own specific delay set for it. As it is now I've got a LOT of apps all firing up at exactly the same time which delays my system bog-down from boot up to a little later. Alternatively, maybe an user incremental delay setting instead of specific delays by item. In other works, an incremental delay of 5 seconds, so item 1 fires at the overall delay setting, 1 min 5 sec item #2 launches, 1 min 10 sec item 3 fires off, etc.

RANDYHARRIS I have been using Vienna for years and happened to spot this on MU, because of it's Google Reader synchronization ability I thought I would give it a try. So far it is really cool, admittedly it is not quite as snappy as Vienna which I attribute to the fact that it syncs to the Google Reader online, but the benefit of having two machines that are always on the same page with RSS feeds is pretty awesome. Still using it, and so far pretty darned glad I tried it out. (Version 0.9.11)

Syrinx | Aug 7 2009 |
RANDYHARRIS This is by far the best free Twitter client I have tried bar none. Additionally, the developer is very receptive to input and suggestions. I've made the switch to Syrinx, and will be donating some beer money for the great efforts. (Version 2.1.1)

FlashMount | Aug 7 2008 |
RANDYHARRIS FlashMount is great, but when DMG's are downloaded from Safari FlashMount doesn't not automount the DMG. It would be great if FM were updated to work around this issue. (Version 1.5.2)

Glims | Aug 4 2008 |
RANDYHARRIS With version 1.0b6 Glims is now full featured enough that I'm ditching Saft. - Undo closed tab with Ctrl Z - Restore Safari with tabs from last session - Type Ahead (search by just typing your search string) and Glims does it far more elegantly than does Saft - auto close or supress the downloads window Additionally, Glims does (my apologies if I don't realize that Saft does these things.) - thumbnail pictures to accompany Yahoo and Google searches - Inquisitor style searches from the search bar - favicons on the search bar - favicons show up on tabs Saft does have these features that are not in Glims at this time, you'll have to decide if they're worth the price of Saft compared to free Glims which is adding features quickly. - autocomplete, the ability to store and recall your logon info for secure sites that ask a browser to not store it. - Kiosk (I'd never use this) - Ad blocking (why, Safari AdBlock is free and great) - quick search abilities (I prefer Launchbar for these) - Tab handling, some features about tabs are more full featured in Saft. Microsoft Office 2008 | Jun 25 2008 |
RANDYHARRIS I have Office 2008 installed, I tried updating with the 12.1.1 update but after it scans my system it tells me that I have no Office found on my system. Odd since I got the update from the Office AutoUpdate application. (Version 12.1.1)

Scheduler | Jun 3 2008 |
RANDYHARRIS For years Windows has had a feature called "Scheduled Tasks" this offered the ability to schedule events easily in the Windows environment. While you can use iCal for some scheduling tasks, this is not an ideal approach. Scheduler is a great utility which brings the ease and function of Windows Scheduled Tasks to Mac OS X. The program is very simple and easy to use, I've only used it for a day now, but in setting it up and testing it out - it works flawlessly for me. I am so very excited to have stumbled upon this little gem. While it is freeware, I'll be donating a few bucks to support the cause. If I can nitpick, I'd prefer the Scheduler have a look which is more inline with other Mac programs, but it's not a bad interface, and it works well. (Version 5.0.3)

AutomountMaker | Jul 20 2007 |
RANDYHARRIS I just started using AutomountMaker 1.3 for SMB network connections on my LAN. It works wonderfully, very easy to setup and it fires up and connects to the network volumes just as it should. I would love to see an internal manager for activating connections upon boot instead of adding the files to my account launch items, but that's a small thing, it does work fine how it is. MKVtools | May 8 2007 |
RANDYHARRIS This program has been 100% successful in converting the few MKV's that I run across into playable XviD files. Other programs like ffmpegX and VisualHub choked on them, but not MoKgVm2DVD. (Version 1.0.1)

Voice Candy | May 24 2006 |
RANDYHARRIS I've been using Voice Candy for a few weeks now and I really like it a lot. I bought it with the intention of using like a voice version of Apple's PhotoBooth, which my kids love. After using it a little I quickly realized that Voice Candy is about the best and easiest to use Voice eMail program that I've run across. This app works great for Voice eMails, very simply and straight forward to use, and it can also do all the effects which are fun. I've had the application crash a few times when I was adjusting Preferences, but never while using it. I'm using v1.0
