RAMPANCY With the apparent death of both Shiira and Demeter, Cruz has stepped up as an excellent alternative WebKit-based browser for OS X (see also Sunrise 2). It's unfortunate that using alternative window styles (e.g. MobileMe and HUD-styled windows) had to be dropped in 10.6 but it's not the developer's fault. (Version 0.4)

Camino | Nov 19 2009 |
RAMPANCY By design, Firefox has never been able to be fully and properly integrated with OS X, and it never will, due to its use of XUL which is necessary for its extensions architecture to work. While Firefox does have its strengths, for a Gecko-based browser that looks, feels, and acts like a proper Mac OS X application, Camino works far better than Firefox. (Version 2.0)

RAMPANCY "A price of $19 would be much better-fitting for an application of this kind." ...and if they priced it at $19, people would complain it was too expensive and demand they priced it at $10. And then people would complain it was too expensive and demand it be priced at $5. Then people would just say "why not make it freeware"? Good quality Mac software does not just come out of nowhere, nor does it grow on trees. (Version 3.0.0.BETA-84)

MainMenu | Oct 24 2009 |
RAMPANCY It's with a heavy heart that I write this. When it comes to donating or paying for shareware apps, I'm far from stingy. I've donated to apps like Butler, Scribblet and D2X-XL, and I paid for apps like Mailplane, Things, or ShoveBox who many would consider overpriced, or not worth paying for. That said, I am not paying for MainMenu. This app used to be my first app that I'd install over any OS install, or over any Mac I'd receive; it was an app I'd unhesitatingly recommend to anyone as a repair or troubleshooting tool. If Santa Software had retained ownership of this app, and if the original coder/owner had even added some basic extra functionality like what's offered in Onyx or TinkerTool, or Print Center Repair, I'd be very much inclined to pay the full $20. The problem is that none of this is the case. Dare to Be Creative clearly hasn't done anything substantial to this product since it acquired it, and $20 is simply not a reasonable price to pay for what little they have done. $9.99 or $5.99 would be a much more reasonable price, or at least a free "lite" version with the core functionality of the original MainMenu with a for-pay "pro" version with added features like those in the apps I listed above. As it stands now though, this smacks of a blatant cash grab. A shame. Please, please go with Onyx or the many other system maintenance apps out there. It's a shame that this company ruined such a fine and wonderful app. (Version 2.0.3)

Cha-Ching | Oct 6 2009 |
RAMPANCY What's truly upsetting about it is that there was almost no accountability on the part of Midnight Apps for the delays. Just, "oh, we didn't expect things would take so long; sorry!" - the fact that their betas had expiration dates made things even worse. And then they decided to put time, energy and resources into an iPhone port of Cha-Ching. That's nothing less than a slap in the face to all of their customers on the Mac. Truly, I've seldom seen such irresponsibility on the part of a developer towards their product and their customers. I think they'd do everyone a service if they just discontinued Cha-Ching on the Mac, directed all of their customers to iBank, and focused on their iPhone app, since that's all they seem to care about. RAMPANCY Their update window for version 1.1 didn't mention that it was going to be Intel-only, and furthermore they took off version 1.0 so any 10.5 PPC users left couldn't use their app. Sad. If I'm going to be left in the lurch and lied to I'm ditching this app and using something else. Other developers came out with 10.6-compatible updates to their apps which were compatible with 10.5 and were universal binaries. Why couldn't they do it? (Version 1.1)

RAMPANCY It's worked solidly for me since the 0.7.x releases, and this is on a MacBook Pro and MacBook with more background hacks, InputManager extensions, SIMBL plugins, and APE modules than you could shake a stick at. Have you tried contacting the developers and sending them a bug report? RAMPANCY It is quite harder, as it's easier to misjudge placement of the blocks, and instead of a line, you need to get a full 4x4 block to clear any area of the screen. Wyzo | Apr 16 2009 |
RAMPANCY Why bother? Wyzo took practically 2+ years for their product to reach full feature parity with the Windows version for FireTorrent functionality, and they still don't have a version out for Linux. In the meantime, FoxTorrent has been available for all three versions of Firefox since 2007. You can even already download the FireTorrent extension for Firefox for both Mac and Linux. Many of Wyzo's other features, like mouse gestures and Cooliris, are already available as stand-alone add-ons for Firefox. Apart from the new theme (which isn't much to write home about anyway) there's almost nothing differentiating it from taking Firefox and adding the requisite extensions and themes to it to match Wyzo's features. At least Flock went to the effort to differentiate itself though a tighter integration with social web services. It's silly to see them beating their chest about incredible and revolutionary their browser is, when the truth is that they're practically pushing a reskinned Firefox with a mix of free and proprietary extensions pre-added. RAMPANCY The stickies feature is horribly broken in Notebook 3 - you can't edit stickies once you've set them, and the toolbar item for summoning stickies doesn't even work! You also can't easily delete stickies with a key combo - you have to drag them off your notebook like a dock item, and even that doesn't work half the time. This makes this touted feature in v3 useless to me. Oh yes. I also can't right-click on the toolbar to edit it. IMHO, people still on v2 should hold off upgrading until this very broken feature is fixed. (Version 3.0v340)

Sticky Notes | Mar 25 2008 |
RAMPANCY For me, this does what no other application that I know of (shareware or freeware) does: allow you to attach sticky notes to applications - that made it a must-buy for me. This means that I now truly get the reminders and to-dos that I need to see, when I need to see them - they're not constantly in my face, cluttering up my workspace, especially if they're not immediately pertinent to what I'm doing. Paperclip does something similar, and while I'm sure it's a fine product from a good developer, it attaches its stickies on a per-window/per-document basis, and according to some reviews only allows for one sticky per window/document. That means that for my needs, for now anyway, Sticky Notes is what fits the bill. I just wish development on this app were more active. (Version 1.5b6)

RAMPANCY The only caveats you would have had in running DW4 with 10.5 is that you shouldn't have run it when booted in 10.5, or that you should only run it when booted from a 10.4 volume (which is a a moot point since you can typically only repair your boot disk by starting up from the CD anyway), and that you wouldn't be able to use DW4 on FileVaults created from within Leopard. If you have a lot of data locked up in FileVault then I can understand your anxiety, but it's not like upgrading to 10.5 made DW4 useless to you. http://www.applelinks.com/index.php/more/diskwarrior_4_and_leopard_proceed_but_with_caution_os_x_odyssey_900/ (Version 4.1)

DiskWarrior | Mar 18 2008 |
JOHN SAWYER CJS Actually, the only real conflict between Diskwarrior 4.0 and Leopard, besides its not being able to rebuild directories on an OS 10.5 FileVault or an OS 10.5 disk image file (there were some other minor issues that didn't damage data), is that since DW 4.0 uses OS 10.4's permissions repair routine, instead of OS 10.5's routine, running DW 4.0's permissions repair option will damage permissions on an OS 10.5 startup volume (and possibly non-startup volumes that have been exposed to OS 10.5, but I'm just speculating about that), and this damage can occur regardless of what you're started up from while you're running DW 4.0--OS 10.4, 10.5, or even the DW 4.0 startup CD. RAMPANCY Trying to open this app (MBP C2D, 10.4.10) gives me the following message: "Library not loaded: @executable_path/rbframework.dylib Referenced from: /Users/jancheta/Desktop/CrossWire.app/Contents/MacOS/CrossWire Reason: no suitable image found. Did find: /Users/jancheta/Desktop/CrossWire.app/Contents/MacOS/rbframework.dylib: mach-o, but wrong architecture /Users/jancheta/Desktop/CrossWire.app/Contents/MacOS/rbframework.dylib: mach-o, but wrong architecture" Wrong architecture, eh? I guess he has some issues with building universal binary apps. (Version 1.0b1)

RAMPANCY Download doesn't seem to work for me - I've been trying all day, but I keep on getting a "Server Could Not Be Found" error message. (Version 2.6)

Smultron better icons | Apr 11 2009 |
AETNARIA Okay, time has passed and Smultron's version has grown, along with many changes to it. Applying this to the current (v3.5.1) Smultron makes for some rather odd graphics. The tools get shrunk inside small squares now, and the generic document's appearance is not redone. The app's icon and preference panels are as-intended though. (Version 1.1)

SYHARRIS The icon replacement patch (Smultron Better Icons- http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/22895/smultron-better-icons) works just fine with Smultron 3.0.3.....at least it does for me. Are you sure you followed the S.B.I. directions exactly? (Version 3.0.3)

RAMPANCY I had the exact same problem Migrant had. Until this issue gets resolved I simply can't use or recommend this. (Version 1.0.0.155)

JESS2006 I had the same problem. Do you have Mailtags installed? Turns out MailTags doesn't reinstall the Spotlight importer even if you have the latest beta. Delete the Mailtags importer from /Library/Spotlight or ~/Library/Spotlight. Then reinstall Mailtags, you should be fine. (Version 1.0.0.155)

Tor | Jan 13 2007 |
RAMPANCY Edit: My apologies for my mistake, the actual app running on startup which is PPC is Privoxy, not Vidalia. (Version 0.1.1.26)

Tor | Jan 12 2007 |
RAMPANCY A warning: while the Tor package itself is Universal, Vidalia, which also runs as a startup background application (not just the launcher) is still PPC-only. (Version 0.1.1.26)

RAMPANCY Shhhh! Keep quiet! You don't want Apple to know this is still up and force whoever's providing this file to take it down, do you? ;) (Version RC1.2)

RAMPANCY An awesome program that does exactly what I want it to do and what I need it to do - nothing more, nothing less. Thanks! - the only thing I'd like to see is Address Book integration (allowing for contacts to be linked to items alongside URLs and files... (Version 1.6)

JIM MCGOWAN ToDo can indeed link to do items with contacts from Address Book. There are a several ways to do this. The first is to simply drag a contact from Address Book's main window into the linked item field in ToDo's inspector window. The Second is to install the ToDo Address Book plugins (by selecting ToDo>Install Address Book Plugins from the menu bar). This allows you to click on a phone number or email address in Address Book and create a new call or email reminder item from the contextual menu. Finally, you can install the Quicksilver Plugin (ToDo>Install Quicksiver Plugin) and when you select a contact in Quicksilver there are actions to create contact reminders in ToDo. A ToDo item that is linked with a contact will give you the option in the inspector to set a call reminder or a email reminder. If call reminder is selected, when you click on the open link arrow for that item a bezel is drawn onscreen with the telephone number in large type. If email is selected, clicking the open link arrow creates a new mail message addressed to the contact in your default mail client.

NuFile | Nov 4 2006 |
RAMPANCY Great utility. One problem though - on 10.4.8, with NuFile v1.9 installed the "Open With..." selection in contextual menus freezes and crashes the Finder consistently. The usual suspects (repair permissions, reset LaunchServices database) don't work at all. (Version 1.9)

UNO | Sep 13 2006 |
RAMPANCY Thank you, thank you, thank you for imposing some sense of sanity back in iTunes. Pity it won't fix those scroll bars or buttons. God help us all if Leopard looks like that... (Version 1.3.1)

RAMPANCY A really nice utility. I really didn't appreciate how awful Apple's decision to go with a Metal Finder was until I saw how clean and nice everything looks with UNO installed. Definitely a must-have. (Version 1.3)

D2X-XL | Aug 6 2006 |
RAMPANCY The game works great now! I had to start a new player profile instead of using the default player included. The only problem is that for me, loading and saving games is broken - when I load a game I get the black transparent walls bug mentioned on the D2X forums. (Version 1.6.130)

RAMPANCY I'd heard a lot about this when the betas first came out. Bravo to the devs for making this open source... Good: It's quite fast and doesn't take up any more CPU/Memory than Mozilla. You can hide the menubar and dock icon when it launches to save space and hassle. Very nice. Not So Good: It's crashed for no reason on me once, and I don't know how to configure the prefs once I've hidden the menubar and dock icon. The hotkey for making the window slide in and out doesn't seem to change when I change it in the preferences dialog - I had to change my spotlight hotkeys as a result because those conflicted with the defaults. All in all, it's something I might use as my main browser from now on - it's a nice complement to other apps of the same style like sidenote and Xshelf. (Version 1.0)

RAMPANCY I have the same issues here. The scripts don't do anything useful, even though I've followed the instructions to the letter. All they do is just open the Script Editor. I tried saving the scripts as "Run-Only", but that didn't help at all. I wish this could work - it's a cool idea and it's something which could work perfectly with Butler. Pity it's unusable. RAMPANCY This is just what I needed for my small Mac network at my home, especially since xAFP doesn't seem to work. Growl support is an especially welcome feature. I'm wondering if the menu could actually show the name of the computer/user that's sharing with the host computer (in addition to its IP address)...that would be a nice thing to have. BASTI79 Thanks for your suggestion! It made it into version 1.1.2: The name of the connecting computer will be shown inside the GROWL notification, but only if it can be resolved via DNS. Since DNS Names of connecting users via the internet can be quite long, I would not want to show those long names in the menu ... but I will think about a solution. (Version 1.1.2)
