PHRIPLEY  This is not working for as expected under Snow Leopard, aka 10.6.

Notifications fire endlessly and opening the Growlichat Pref Pane crashes system Preferences.

Am going to try Chax, as recommended elsewhere:

Mac No-IP X

PHRIPLEY  I attempted to install 3.1.2 over 3.1.1 but the installer refused to proceed.

I opened a trouble ticket with the folks at no-ip.com and they stated that the are not substantial differences between 3.1.1 and 3.1.2.

The new version number is because they are using a different installed in 3.1.2

Users of 3.1.1 need not (and likely cannot) update to 3.1.2

PHRIPLEY  In MacOS (before Mac OSX). Files had two forks. The data fork and the resource fork.

As Unix has no concept of a resource fork, unix applications often behave in an unexpected manner when they encounter a resource fork (mostly they just ignore it).

Some Unix applications have been updated by Apple and others to handle resource forks.

Basically you don't need resource forks on MacOSX. The only time you would worry about them is if you were compressing a document that originated in MacOS ("Classic") and you needed to preserve that resource fork to use in Classic again.

Lots more here:

eMail Extractor
Oct 17 2006

PHRIPLEY  I have used this program for legitimate business uses.

I company I support has a home-grown contact database of actual customers and actual vendors with whom they do business. The users of the database ended up putting email addresses into about 20 different fields trying to warp the system to their needs. When it came time to send out a mass e-mailing to customers and vendors we dumped to a text file and then extracted the emails addresses using this tool. It removes mal-formed addresses and duplicates, which is something spammers don't really care about.

I count it a very valuable addition to my toolkit.

PHRIPLEY  Did you try the free demo before you bought? I did and it recovered a valide file of the type that I most needed. Only then did I plop down the $$ for the license...

PHRIPLEY  MySQL Admin /does/ work remotely. However I find it still a bit buggy and crash prone. It is still being actively developed and I have high hopes its future.

PHRIPLEY  Perhaps it is because you are running Tiger (MacOSX 10.4) and the version that you are using does not work with Tiger.

PHRIPLEY  This great little utility has turned my otherwise useless beige 8550/G3 250 into a great little server (it's plenty fast too as long as I don't log in to the GUI).

The software is well supported and regularly updated.

While Macupdate lists it as "Free", in fact users are encouraged to pay $10 as a shareware fee. Well worth it. Way to go Ryan!

PHRIPLEY  A replacement for MacFlow under OSX was my last missing peice to keep me out of classic. OmniGraffle is very intuitive, very OSX. Great for building ER charts and network topography charts.

PHRIPLEY  I have used the unregistered version to send two faxes and it worked great. I don't need to be able to receive faxes tho. You can't beat the price (especially as compared to FaxSTF -- which crashes all the time). You can tell it is still in development but I registered to encourage the author... Go Ben go. As for Danny's comment about 'fishiness', I'll just say that the space required for installation is not the same as the amount of space consumed by the installed application. Yeah, it's not as small as the tiny download would indicacate but there is nothing fishy about it.

PHRIPLEY  Wow am i glad I found this!

I am running OSX on an old 8550 with a Newer G3/250 upgrade card enabled through XPostFacto.

I was psyched that this worked at all whatever the speed.

Installing CacheControl X has re-enbled the 512KB cache on the upgrade card and the machine is soooo much more responsive.

My only wish is for improved documentation.
