Norrkross Movie
Sep 20 2008
***..

PFITZPA1  Got this as part of the mupromo package and today was the first chance I had to really give it a go. I was making a short video for my daughters project.

The User interface feels fairly well designed though some of the things like changing text color and background seemed a bit hard to find at first.

The concept seems quite good but I had a lot of trouble getting transitions to work correctly (or even at all).

For example I couldn't get a transition to fade to black to work at the end of a clip. I had to resort to an animated filter which was a lot trickier to get working than I expected.

The program crashed several times and I lost a fair chunk of work each time.

Filters were very difficult for me. Sometimes I would add a filter but find it very hard to to find the filter in the track again. The node view showed nothing.

Transition choices were very limited.

I also had trouble adding transitions when there was a gap between clips, it seems like you have to make the clips overlap before you can add a transition.

I think this software has great potential overall but the crashing and quirkiness was a killer for me.

I ended up resorting to iMovie and had the project done in no time (though I could not find a way to selectively control track volume at specific times in a clip, which Norrkross seemed to do quite well).

I'll try it again when an update comes out and I have another project to do.

Periscope
Sep 15 2008
**...

PFITZPA1  Got this as part of the mupromo bundle recently and was excited to try it.

However I could never get the email sharing to work on my .mac account, making it practically useless for me as email is the only sharing option that works for me.

The options were fairly easy to navigate and figure out, and the GUI is not bad.

The Window/Activity log showed nothing for me even though I had several motion and manual triggered shots.

CPU Usage is ridiculous, I presume it's processing the video to detect motion but maxing out the CPU permanently also makes this a non-starter. (Note when I restarted periscope the CPU usage settled down at around 10% so I'm not sure why the initial high usage was there)

Lack of video, which should be a simple feature to add is also a minus.

I couldn't get a sense of what the delay between snaps was after a trigger and if it was configurable.

The default setting for the video is reversed, I'm not sure why that is but I had to find the video setting to flip the video so it looked correct.

The Support/forums were of very little help. Most of the related posts had no resolution that could help me.

I gave this a 2 for ease of use because I had difficulty verifying/debugging why email was not working and help was useless.

For value I got this as part of the mupromo package so the cost was not an issue, however the fact it doesn't work with email makes it little/no value for money as I can't use it properly.

Stability I gave a 3 because of the CPu loading issue.

I wished this would have worked like I wanted it to. Great idea, not so good execution.
