PCHARLES67 I'm in agreement with Mudflapper, it was easy to enter the code. The problem I had was that version 2 provided less hits than version 1, so I went back to version 1 and had to re-enter my code again. (Version 2.0v74)

PCHARLES67 Not entirely true. When I moved my virtual machine from Parallels 3 on the iMac to VMWare 1 on the Macbook I was not asked to reactivate, nor was I asked to reactivate when upgrading VMWare to version 2. However, when I tried to upgrade the Parallels 3 virtual machine to Parallels 4, I was asked to reactivate, similarly when I tried the VMWare 2 machine with Parallels 4, I was asked to reactivate. PCHARLES67 Once I figured out how to get the VMWare drive opened in VirtualBox I then had to figure out what network setting to use because the defaults did not work on my MacBook. After about an hour or so of messing with this, Windows told me that the activated virtual machine was nolonger activated and I needed a new serial. Same for Office and a couple of other activated applications, so back to VMWare, which is still a lot more polished. Good for free though, particularly if you are starting from scratch. VMware was less of a headache to get running on my machine and has not presented activation problems when upgrading. I was running Parallels on my iMac and had problems with activation when trying to upgrade from 3 to 4, so moved to VMWare and have been much happier. (Version 2.2.2)

FRIEDDYLAN The Windows activation requirement is normal, even under VMWare and Parallels. I can only suspect that Office (being an MS product) obeys the same laws of activation but I may be wrong. (Version 2.2.2)

NEONBLUE2 The reactivation is due to some sort of major virtual hardware shift in the virtualised environments. The same can happen in reality if you ever make too many changes to the hardware, which Windows interprets as a different computer that it's been installed on. (Version 2.2.2)

PCHARLES67 I really like that this application allows me to view Twitter, Facebook, RSS, and Google reader from the same location. It really streamlines the way I work by putting things in one place. The twitter client could support a few of the Tweetie features like the long tweets and conversation following, but apart from that I think it is great. Sometimes when loading it can take a while to bring in the data, but I guess I have a lot of feeds. (Version 1.0r563)

PCHARLES67 Before placing a bad review I thought I'd describe my problem. I registered this application as a possible "lighter" alternative to photoshop elements for simple editing and layer work. The problem is that the program on my Dual Core 2.3GHz G5 is incapable of pasting a photo on to a layer and then resize it to fill the work area. Photoshop Elements has the Place function, which this lacks, and can do this task in under a minute of work. Acorn goes in to spinning beach ball mode and never comes out. I really like the looks of this application and registered it based on a few simple tasks, but if it cannot handle a few layers I will need to post another review. (Version 1.5.2)

PCHARLES67 I got RapidWeaver included in one of those MacUpdate packages and it is a horrible application with the same following as the Emperors New Suit. It cannot import exiting sites, or their content, and have they not heard about WYSIWYG? On top of that you pick a theme and your life ends. At least with iWeb you can pick themes on a page-by-page basis. Sure, Rapidweaver creates fairly clean code but compared to the size of the images and movies the difference is minuscule. FRIEDDYLAN You know you're right, but I think this is a different product idea you have. I suggested textbook output and input as well to better facilitate Quadratics and Matrixes. Its a tall order for the price rand but would definitely get my money. I need a good laptop based graphing calc to match my TI nSpire with CAS and this guy's code seems readily able to pull it off. We would sit back and watch what he does. I'll buy the first graphing version that allows me to view tables based on my graphs. Of course allowing me to drag the graph around and capture the values in a table would be completely awesome. That's like superhero coding.. complete with codpiece!

GIUBAL PCharles, who has written the previous review, doesn't know what he's writing about. iNMR reader is a product for Universities. When they order, they seldom buy spare copies; they order, for exmple, packages of five, ten or twenty copies (or whichever figure). A package of ten copies costs (30 x 10) + 20 = 320 euro, which means a mere 32 euro per copy. Consider that it's not shareware, it's an industrial product. Each sale is invoiced, registered, taxed, etc.. each transaction has a cost. Sometimes they pay after months (and maybe the letter of a lawyer). It's perfectly regular that the company discourages the smallest orders or, at least, tries not to lose money with them. The price scheme of iNMR reader allows the customer to buy how many copies she needs (not just pre-packaged sets). For example, 9 copies would cost 290 euro: she's not forced nor lured to buy the 10th copy that she needn't. Does PCharles prefer a price tag of 50 euro? (Version 3.0.2)

ProfCast | Sep 20 2008 |
PCHARLES67 Most universities are still windows-centric and so we use Powerpoint, and to be honest I find Powerpoint to be far superior for science and technology presentations that Keynote. Apple has clearly not targeted the science community with its iWork package because it lacks any ability to generate equations, and any ability to present graphs with line fits and regression lines. Couple that with the fact that Keynote's audio output to files is so full of bugs you cannot even create an audio slideshow most of the time. I am not sure what Apple was thinking when they added this feature and did not check that it worked, but their response has been lacking for some time now. So, YES, profcast is still needed. RapidWeaver | Aug 22 2008 |
PCHARLES67 I've tried this application on and off for a while now and still find it incredibly clunky to use. I think the problem I have is that this is not a WYSIWYG editor in the same way that most modern editors in this category are (iWeb, Goldfish, Sandvox). The need to switch back and forth between the edit and preview modes is incredibly annoying. I also found myself extremely frustrated by the way changing a theme applied the theme to my whole site. In iWeb and Sandvox the theme was associated with the site, but you could select pages from different themes if you wanted to give different parts of your site a different feel. It may be present in RW, but over the various tests I have still not found it. I was also frustrated by the way I am locked into a themes layout with RW when applications such as iWeb allow me to move content around much more freely. I understand from many reviews that the code for RW is considered superior to that produced by iWeb, but as a general user I am more interested in ease of development than geeking out on clean code since most readers will be interested in the content and not the code. Finally, I am not sure why this product is so much more expensive than the competition and often requires costly plugins to make it do interesting things. (Version 4.1)

Leap | Apr 6 2008 |
PCHARLES67 After playing with this and its partner Yep, I find myself struggling to integrate it into my daily workflow and have just deleted it from my drive. The problem I have with it is that I just did not find it really sped up my ability to find the document I was looking for. The tutorials are amusing, but I do not usually find myself looking for something when I do not know what I am looking for. I usually know what keyword and then can refine it from there. I am also pretty good about keeping work in work folders and play in play folders, so I always know pretty much what I want. Yep, however, is superb. If only Leap worked like Yep, where I could create smart folders for a certain keyword it would be more useful, but I can do that with the finder anyway. It is hard to know whether I should rate this on use to me, or on its quality. It is a nice looking application, a little slow in places when you have as many files as I do, but seems stable. So, I think three stars is a reasonable compromise. (Version 1.0.4)

PCHARLES67 I've been using this on and off for a while and thought it was functional enough to register, but it seems to have a nasty side effect. RapidWeaver | Aug 2 2007 |
PCHARLES67 I am not sure what it is about this software, but I cannot get into it. While it seems to have many features, I feel restricted by the themes and the need to type in that ugly textbox, rather than laying out the text nicely. I like iWeb and I like Sandvox, both of which seem to offer more sophisticated text layout options. The problem with these is that iWeb lacks many of the features, including embedded HTML, and nested pages, while Sandvox (and RW) seem to limit you to one theme per site, and it charges extra for HTML embedding. I really hate that RW requires I switch back and forth between the code and preview modes, among other things. The term Rapidweaver is a little miss leading because you can get up and running much quicker with iWeb or Sandvox. Both are more like page layout programs, which means you can drop pages in and start typing, but not so with RW. The interesting thing about iWeb and its themes is that they are all totally customizable, which means you can change them to suit a particular page. On top of that, you are not stuck with one theme per site, which is really nice. RW's does seem to generate much tighter code than iWeb or Sandvox, but to me the difference is not significant when compared to useability. However, I am sure that people who are familiar with the program are happy with the program, but I feel that if I need to learn a program requiring code (versus iWeb) I should just use Dreamweaver. Anyone considering this application should probably wait and see what the new iWeb has to offer. (Version 3.6.2)

MARKG5 Although out of the box RW is basic, once you get a few plugins it really takes off! For instance the "place where you want it" functionality can be done using "Blocks" from Yourhead software. I didn't like it at first, having cut my teeth on Dreamweaver. However as I used a couple of templates in DW and it was only as a hobby the change to Rapidweaver was welcome (specially as I got it through Macheist or summat!) If it's not for you, OK. But don't write it off until you have tried a few additions to speed it along (Version 3.6.2)

BeerAlchemy | Jun 18 2007 |
PCHARLES67 This is a pretty credible piece of brewing software, although it really could use a little work on the usability front. Its real strengths over other Brewing Apps, for the Mac, is its ability to import recipes into a database, suggest recipes from ingredients if you have a recipe, export to a web page, and send to your iPod if you want to brew with your iPod. The main problem I have with this software is how you enter the recipes: 1. Choose New Recipe from the menu and you would expect it to open a recipe blank to work on, but unfortunately you have to rifle through your recipes to find the new recipe and then double click to open. 2. Entering ingredients requires selecting from a menu, which I found to be incomplete in both the grains and the hops, and it was not immediately obvious how to change those. 3. Once a recipe is entered, if you want to make minor tweaks to the volumes or ingredients you can work with sliders for the ingredients, which is nice, but it is much more tricky to work with the volumes. There are several other problems, but this are all generally minor and you can learn to adapt to them, or you can take a look at Beertools Pro. Although I have a registered copy of BeerAlchemy and use it for importing and viewing a list of recipes, I fear that the new unreleased version of Beertools Pro will trump all of BeerAlchemy's current advantages. It already trumps Beer Alchemy in terms of Usability and available recipes. (Version 1.5.2)

PCHARLES67 The problem I have with this application is that instead of just joining movie clips together, it renders a completely new clip, which takes a very long time even on my dual core G5. PCHARLES67 Despite everyone's whining, Quicken is still the most comprehensive package and essential if you do anything other than just your checkbook. I cannot remember the last time Quicken crashed on me. Although I find the interface works well for me, I would like to see a more standard (perhaps one piece) interface, a PDA application that was not third party, and iPod integration. I would also like to see a better upgrade path. Right now I refuse to pay every year for the minimal upgrades. In fact I have not bought a copy since 2005 because I got one free with my new Mac. I am not sure whether 2007 really offers a lot of upgrade value for the price, but I will probably upgrade in 2008. (Version )

Moneydance is a really nice application, but when you are tracking stocks and mutual funds as I do I find Quicken is much more helpful. I really like its web based integration. DRG Have you ever tried to convert your data so that your bookkeeper can use your data on his Windows-based PC? Good-luck! It is almost impossible to do if your file has any degree of complexity. I've tried doing this with my professional society's finances: it was a nightmare! I wound up just printing it out and the bookkeeper charged us more because he had to input the data manually. And this file was truly simple compared to my personal file which contains deposits containing as many as 20 split lines! The reality is that finance professionals do not use Macs. They use Windows-based PCs. And without that cross platform translation ability, Quicken for Mac is a disabled child. (Version R2)
