Adobe Acrobat
Oct 14 2009

OZEAN  I used Adobe Updater and it worked without any problems. This is in 10.6.1 set to English on a MacBook Pro 2,2.

Also, saving as Adobe PDF finally seems to work. (I never got it to work reliably after updating to 10.6 where there is no Adobe PDF printer anymore. Now we have the Print > PDF > Save as Adobe PDF function, which had big problems - hopefully my impression that those are fixed now is correct!)

OZEAN  I also could not get the two scroll buttons on my Logitech MX500 to work (the ones above and below the scroll wheel). But after checking Alessandro’s website it seems that he has already fixed problems with the non-standard behavior of some Logitech mouse buttons (G5, MX500, MX518, MX700, MX1000) and also with the freewheel scrolling of the MX and VX Revolution models. I guess we’ll have to wait a few days for 3.0.1 to be back in blissful mouse-land :)

Camino
Jun 23 2009

OZEAN  Well, I do not think that they spend too much time on this. It is mostly backporting a few fixes that are in the 2.x series anyway. The good thing about this is that the 1.6.x branch is the last to support Mac OS 10.3.x – so for these users, Camino is one of the few modern browsers that offer up to date security.

However, I would also think that they should push out their updates more often. I have been using the 2.x nightly builds for months now without any major problems and with many benefits to my browsing experience.

OZEAN  Nice, very basic app. Does what it says it does.

There is room for improvement though. Some ideas:

It would be neat to have the option to keep the time scale consistent between locations (i.e. always have the full 24h day range displayed). As it is now, it is a bit difficult to compare different locations, because the scale changes all the time.

Also, the calculate button could be located in closer proximity to the things that it relates to (i.e. the time and date fields).

It is kind of nice to have the current time of day line, but I would find it even more useful if there would be a vertical current day line.

Finally, the display would be prettier if the grid lines would have a constant width (i.e. one pixel). As it is now, some lines appear different than other – probably because of some kind of anti-aliasing / smoothing.

OZEAN  I played the demo for about half an hour, then it became a bit too boring for my taste. The tasks one has to do to proceed are quite obvious and a bit repetitive. I could, however, imagine that this might be a nice game for younger kids…

OZEAN  You are right if auto-save would mean that the document itself just gets saved while working on it. (This is what happens with the auto-save in Mellel and this is why I have turned off auto-save in Mellel.)

What I meant is keeping a backup auto-save copy of the document that can be accessed/opened when Pages/my Mac crashes/shuts down while I am working on the document. Very much like the way Word does it (or Mellel, when you use the automatic _backup_ save option, which I have set to 10 min in Mellel).

****.

OZEAN  Seems to be a nice upgrade – I'll only focus on Pages here:

The outline feature and the full screen view are important and they are nicely implemented. As my previous reviewer, I am baffled by choosing Endnote of all Bibliography apps on the Mac as the one that gets special support by Apple. Luckily, Bookends provides scanning abilities, too - just imagine how nice the result could be if Apple decides to work together with the Bookends team on Bibliography support (look at Mellel to see how great this can be!)

However, what surprised me most about this release is that Apple still does not offer an auto-save option. How could this be? This is such a simple feature. But without it, I am sure to loose at least a day or two of work over the course of six to twelve months. Crashes, hangs and power outages just happen to often to not have the ability to auto-save. For me, this is a major shortcoming – one that will make me stay away from Pages for production use. Too bad.

LEV  Speaking as a control freak, I'd say autosave can be a double-edged sword. You could always use EverSave (donationware) to achieve the same thing.

("Double-edged sword"? Puzzling. I thought most sword were double-edged. Perhaps it should be "double ended" or "sword which it also totally has this like really sharp handle, too" or something.)

OZEAN  I have to chime in with others here and tell you that this game has always been great fun. Playability is excellent and you can use different styles of play to accomplish your goals. In the recent versions, however, this game has also become very refined in terms of its user interface, the sounds and the music and practically all other aspects of the game. If you have at least a little fun with strategy games, you must try this one!

OZEAN  oops, sorry, just checked and realized that Adium 1.2.x runs under Tiger too. My fault - no idea why AdiumBook then runs under Leopard only. Perhaps because of changes to Address Book and it being too hard to support both Tiger and Leopard Address Book?

OZEAN  This really is an excellent app. Using layers to add additional information step by step, makes it easy to convey even highly complex information. The user interface also helps a lot – allowing access to the functionality without having to dig through several layers of menus. As many others here have already stated: the output looks gorgeous and can easily be adapted to different environments. However, all of this is even topped by their customer service, which in my experience has been quick and forthcoming even with issues that might seem minor when seen from the perspective of a software company. Five stars, and some well invested money.

HTMLValidator
Jul 31 2007

OZEAN  Well, I do not know whose fault this is, but I am always annoyed if a beta version is announced as "free" on this website and then we discover that the final version costs (in this case a substantial amount of) money. If I would have known that HTMLValidator would cost more than five bucks, I wouldn't have downloaded it in the first place. I guess I have to delete all prefs and caches and redownload XMLNanny, which is not as good as this software, but actually free and remaining so. (The last point is particularly important because the beta versions of HTMLValidator had expiration dates, so they were only free/usuable for a limited amount of time. I think we should be informed about this as early as possible.)

Skim
Jul 26 2007

OZEAN  Is that really possible? I am not able to find an option that would make Skim open PDF using the full visible area and display facing pages. Full visible area means everything except for the dock (i.e. a maximum size window, but not not full screen). Facing pages means two pages at once. PDFView does this perfectly. If Skim can do this, then I will delete PDFView from my machine…

Bookends

*****

OZEAN  Investing in this app is one of the best things I did for my academic work – for several reasons. (a) I know of no other app that develops in such close connection to its user base. This leads to feature introductions that put Bookends far ahead of the competition. (b) Development is not only going in the right direction, it is also very fast. (Take a look at the feature list - subject bibs and PDF display in Bookends are just two of many other great feature additions for which alone Endnote would charge the full price of an upgrade.) (c) The price/value is excellent.(Especially when regarding upgrade and educational discounts - again, Endnote is abysmal in this regard.) (d) Last but not least, and this has been said before, I cannot think how any app could have better support.

Bookends
Aug 6 2007

ODYSSEUS  In my experience, it is only shareware developers (as opposed to companies) who offer many free updates to their products over several years (three years in the case of Bookends and Mellel). It is interesting to speculate on how this can be possible: it seems that aside from having extremely low distribution costs, certain shareware developers may also have other sources of income (just as open-source software developers must). Can you imagine a company, with many employees, offering free upgrades over a significant period of time, relying only on sales to new customers for income? How would they stay afloat? I think that a different business model applies to Bookends and Mellel. There are advantages and disadvantages to each.

OZEAN  Nice to see finally see a freeware front end for ipfw. After BrickHouse went practically defunct this is what I am looking for. I like the start so far but I would prefer it, if the interface was less monolithic. I.e. the main window cannot be resized and the firewall log cannot be displayed in a seperate window (which I really need to finetune my firewall settings). Other than that: great start – I am looking forward to see this app develop!

OZEAN  Regarding the built-in pdf production feature of NeoOffice: This feature is (in my view) superior to OS X's built in print to pdf function because it can automatically generate chapter entries etc. that can be used to navigate the pdf document, and it also includes more meta-data to help classify (and index) the pdf document.

OZEAN  This is a very important app for me, allowing me access to aspects of my recordings that otherwise would take lots of time - or that would go completely unnoticed. I use this for research and although it is not the perfect tool I am sure it will improve quickly and I am very happy to have invested my money in this product. Matthieu, the head of the developer team, is very responsive and has implemented features/resolved bugs which I have requested/reported to him. I do recommend this app and I am very confident about its future development.
