OLIPOWER The whole concept of "unlocking" as a "carrot in front of the donkey" is stupid. All it does is this: I wait and see whether or not the good apps gets unlocked. BUT, I also: Become more and more rational as time goes by. As in; "well, I already have this app, and never really liked that app anyway..." I may even forget checking again before the deal ends. I have a busy weekend ahead of me. So, all in all, why have that unlocked crap concept? Had all the apps been available from the beginning, we could have already hit way more sales than the few current sales. Only one thing to call it, and that's greed. (Version )

Ubercaster | Jun 25 2007 |
OLIPOWER I can NOT recommen Ubercaster to anyone. Look at their forums to see the multitude of weird bugs. I myself used Ubercaster since before it went 1.0 (half a year or so), and a few times it worked as expected. Most of the time it did NOT work as expected. CPU would rise to 50-100%, force quit app, it would sometimes not open documents, sometimes FTP-upload would work, the next day not, etc. All in all, expect the unexpected when it comes down to bugs and Ubercaster. And I have healthy macs, a MacBook and an iMac, and several different USB mics, so it is not due to my macs themselves being unstable. Ubercaster is just not stable. I ended up asking for a refund, which I got, thankfully. But also regretfully, as I've had high hopes for Ubercaster as it offers a unique approach. But to a serious podcaster, it's unacceptable to have a guest ready to be interviewed, when Ubercaster refuse to behave. Use something else, Audio Hijack Pro, Amadeus or whatever. They're all stable for me. (Version 1.1)

Sound Byte | Jun 22 2007 |
OLIPOWER This app is just what I need after ditching the horribly unstable Ubercaster. However, this SoundByte is a bit overpriced IMHO, and lacks (apparantly, please prove me wrong) features like looping individual sounds (a breakbeat f.e.) and the interface aesthetically leaves a lot to be desired. I also need to set in and out cue points for the individual audio files... (Version 3.4)

OLIPOWER I agree. What a lame way to go by the developer. Why oh why... Piracy? Well, he has a popular app, so I assume he also has a proper cashflow from loyal customers (like me)... Hmm, then I'd say greed is the answer. But why suffer usability for greed? (Version 1.37)

iGTD | Jun 1 2007 |
OLIPOWER I'm with this guy on this one. I've been on/off GTD since 2004, and also used iGTD, but even though my life is busy and complicated and therefore totally on target for David Allen's advice, I find GTD to be way too much effort to do, in order to have a "mind like water" as David describes perfect flow. Real "mind like water" according to zen buddhism, which is at the root of karate philosophy, is something else: You try to calm your mind, do what's at hand, trust your mind (not your "collection bucket" / inbox or PDA) just as it is, and overall be in the moment. Not be in some mac app, deferring, delegating, someday maybe, whatever, this, that, being frantic. GTD is good, but a concept to grasp, and then move on. A great book on that is marc Lesser's ZBA, Zen of Business Administration. Cheesy title, yet the best book I've ever read, and the one I'd keep if I could only keep one book. If I could keep two, I'd also keep Hagakure, the book of the samurai. It really outlines the concept of true productivity, right effort, and a whole lot else. All that being said, iGTD is a good app, and a good not too rigid implentation of GTD. I'm happy using Daylite now. A huge app, but it sure does simplify my life, because it is so flexible. OLIPOWER I would love to read some reviews of this app. But at $249 I won't even try it out myself, given the multitude of free, superb open source cms's out there. Especially Drupal, MODx and TypoLight graps my attention. Maybe the developer should consider reducing his price. Who is the taget user? Low-end people use RapidWeaver, and high-end users use one of the many CMS's out there, both open source and commercial. (Version 1.1)

Studiometry | May 21 2007 |
OLIPOWER I used Studiometry since version 1.11 up til the latest version 3.x.x where I got quite saddened by the 4.x.x update. No improvements, only new bloat. Anyway, yes the developers attitude is stubborn to put it mildly. And yes, in my years with Studiometry, I never made an invoice myself. Too impossible. Same goes for the "wysiwyg" tool given in SM4. Now, Billings' invoice tool is something that works. It's not InDesign, but it works beautifully. And, in the new version of Billings, it integrates with Merlin the super project management app. Together those two apps costs only a tad more than Studiometry. But then you get two Cocoa apps, that both rock in their domains! Not to push competing products, but Tom the developer of Studiometry has not been the most problemsolving dude in my years of having trouble with Studiometry, with no support, miscalculations, currency-trouble, stability, sync-issues, you name it. What a cool and useful application. Been using Gleam, but it's dog slow on my iMac G5, so I started looking for alternatives and found 1001. Happily I discover it has many features that will let me work faster and more efficiently. Especially the way I can tag images, and send them to groups, before uploading them. OLIPOWER This seems to be a very promising app. It's quite stable for a beta, and works well. There are a few concepts I have to experiment more with in order to fulle understand it. However, looking forward to see the next versions. Features I'd like to see: Multiple mics. And the ability to route the mic through a plugin, f.e. a compressor. (Version 1.0b11)

Studiometry | Feb 25 2007 |
OLIPOWER The developer stated: "Studiometry also has hundreds of features that billings does not have (including completely customizable invoices), hence the price difference." Indeed that is both untrue, and... paradoxically... what makes Studiometry slow, buggy, clumpy. Featuritis. Studiometry can do so much, it just does not do it WELL at all! The invoice feature... The "Planning" feature... the later being a GANTT chart - but an utterly useless implementation of a GANTT chart. And the developer should have spend more time replying to support-issues and valid user-feedback, than to badmouth reviewers here. But Tom, the developer, does have a clear tendency to hear what he want to hear, and somehow deliberately "misunderstand" user gripes. Like above where he assumes he has valid answers, yet just plain does not answer the real issue. And that's coming from a long-time Studiometry user (v1.1 - v3.9) who recently swithed to... Tadahhh: Billings 2;-) And yes, it is indeed better! (Version 4.1.1)

AppZapper | Feb 25 2007 |
OLIPOWER Thank you for your words. But please read my last line again: "Typing it once for the whole batch should be enough." Of course I wanna type my password, but not 30 or 40 times to delete 20 apps! Pretty repetitive task. I could, like you say, log into my admin account, delete the apps I would like to delete. However, that's not clever, as that would not get rid of the user-related files, them being in my normal user-account! I guess the purpose of AppZapper is to get rid of all the app-related files right? Then your solution is a bit half-hearted. (Version 1.8)

OLIPOWER Hmm... I really wanted to like this app. I was a bit disappointed with the FTP features: No SFTP / SSH. Only SSL which I was unable to make work for me. Same goes for WebDAV. And I really needed an "Edit With..." contextual functionality, to be able to edit files directly on the server. F.e. CSS stylesheets and so on. But that feature is not implemented. Apart from that I really liked the interface. Though the prefs was a bit daunting. And yes I did spend more than an hour testing this app, and reading on Google, the developers site, and my webhosts KB, in order to find help with the setup issues outlined above, but with no luck. (Version 4.1.9)

AppZapper | Feb 7 2007 |
OLIPOWER A quite overestimated app. It almost never finds all the files related to an app. Even similarly named files, containing the apps name! And ever since I started using my computers non-admin as a standard-user, AppZapper will ask me to write my admin password once or more for each and every app I delete. So whenever I feel like cleaning up my applications folder, I have to sit there and feel like an idiot typing my admin username and password like a zillion-times. Typing it once for the whole batch should be enough. (Version 1.8)

FAHLMAN I can guarantee you that you don't want your standard user account to have the ability to delete files from the locations where AppZapper is deleting these files. If you were smart you would use Fast User Switching to log in to your Admin account and delete the application you needed deleted and then use FUS to switch back to your standard account. You want the security of a standard account but the power of a admin account? You can't have it both ways. (Version 1.8)

OLIPOWER This is a Jumsoft product. Jumsoft also makes the list/notebook app called Process, which looks so nice from the outside, but so many people have lost data due to data-corruption in Process. I had a major problem when my final exam writings document suddenly would not open due to an error! And their support has never answered any enquiry, not even pre-sales questions! Relationship seems to be same story with a different name, judging from the comments below. And yes, I did try Relationship, and it does not integrate with Apple Address Book, which makes it a no-go for me, since AB provides sync with mobile devices via iSync. OLIPOWER I can't really recommend Studiometry any longer. Was using it, but switched to Billings, because of several episodes of zero support - literally no replies for months (other customers same experience) which is totally unacceptable. What is acceptable but annoying, is the addition of new features while neglecting to fix old known bugs, and clean up the interface. the result is just clumsy. Additionally, the price has increased to silly heights. It is more expensive than such fine tools as Merlin, OmniPlan and Daylite - but it is no Cocoa app at that - it's a RealBasic app! I can't stand bad service;-) Would like to go with iRatchet - but ... it's just so daunting, so many options here and there, and I believe strongly in this formula: Number of options/features x bugs = many bugs. OLIPOWER Maybe I should elaborate a bit on the features I like: Billings has Address Book sync - whereas many competing apps provide "copy from Address Book"... But imagine, your co-worker/freelancer receives a call from a client, the client says he moved. Ok new address is put into Apple Address Book. Next day I send that client an invoice, to the wrong/old address, because the app was not synced with Address Book. Or, the other way round, I'm visiting my client, but the address I have on my phone is not up-to-date because the phone syncs with Address Book, and Address book was not synced with the app, in which I put his new address. Such a small difference in an app can make a huge difference in daily worklflow. As of writing iRatchet does not support Address Book sync, while Billings does. I like that a lot;-) (Version 2.0b3)

OLIPOWER Having been a longtime Studiometry user, I was slowly getting disillusioned by its buggyness, bloated featureset, unanswered support tickets, etc. The recent version 4 made me start looking for alternatives. I find Billings 2 a viable alternative. It has the features I need, in a clear workflow, intuitive, and not bloated. I've been indecisive between Billings and iRatchet, but iRatchet is just too... featurerich... and yet lacks some of the features I find most important - features readily present in Billings 2. Now, I hope MarketCircle will develop and support this version 2 a lot more than I can see from the previous comments they've done on version 1. (Version 2.0b3)

FREQUENCY Yes, I was in a similar situation a while back trying to decide between Billings, iBiz and iRatchet. I eventually went with iRatchet, a decision I don't regret as Mike has always been great on support and answering questions through the forum. iRatchet is however let down by it's interface and invoices. I had a look at the beta of Billings 2 and was impressed by the improvements over the first version. However as Oliver said there are some simple additions that would really enhance the usability of both apps - one i'd really like to see is the ability to create folders in both the project and client windows. This would allow easier management of one-off versus regular clients. Billings would also benefit from a better range of import options if they hope to tempt users away from other similar applications. Also Marketcircle need to develop better support as the current level of "bad press" they are getting for support is very much offputting for potential new customers. I'll be keeping an eye on Billings for the next while but I'm not ready to abandon iRatchet yet. (Version 2.0b3)

FREQUENCY I'm with you on the badmouthing thing...well not badmouthing exactly but sure as hell letting all potential customers know if a developer/company has really bad support. Bad reviews for Studiometry literally stopped me in my tracks from making a purchase. I think a lot of people can see the potential for better integration between Daylite and Billings - it COULD be THE killer app. There are some discussions to that effect on the Marketcircle forums to which I've added my voice. On the iRatchet front - I think it did originally have a bigger feature set than Billings 1.0 but now they are pretty much level. However the way these features are displayed in the interface is the difference. When you open iRatchet you basically see everything which can be daunting. Billings wins on that front. As I said on the Marketcircle forums if they were able to integrate Daylite and Billings seamlessly, make it sync fully with iCal , Address book etc and add a GTD-like workflow I would buy it in a heartbeat. I suspect I'm not alone in that either! : ) (Version 2.0b3)

iDefrag | Dec 3 2006 |
OLIPOWER Yeah. I'm with you on this one. I've been sincerely interested in purchasing this app, but I can't use the 100 MB demo limit for testing the app, and after too many stupid purchases in the past, ending up just wasting money, I've stopped purchasing "the cat in the sack" so to speak. So, I kindly wrote the developer. And got a kind reply in return. To summarize: "People only defrag every few months and a fully functional demo would therefore not lead to a purchase because people would just use the demo" "In order to use the 100 MB demo, you can just create a 100 MB disk image with Disk Utility" Say what man? Will I then be able to see the speed gain afterwards, on my 100 MB disk? No. So, the demo is useless. At least they could offer a 100 GB demo, so people could defrag their laptop drive or a smaller partition etc. (Version 1.5.7)

OLIPOWER I'll second your comment on the wooden stuff. No reason for that - it does not blend with the otherwise fine interface. PS: now at version 0.9.5 Midnight Inbox starts to look more usable, the database being sorted out, and many bugs ironed out. It is however still not finished, but it holds a lot of promise, and will deliver many features new to the scene of GTD on the Mac. Kudos to the developer for having the will-power to do so much work in so little time. He should have initially called it an alpha-version though. But, that's just words. When it works it works. Life Balance | Aug 9 2006 |
OLIPOWER I got interested in Life Balance a few years ago. That was before the whole David Allen Getting Things Done GTD wave started. I've been wanting to use Life Balance for a long time. They offer a unique approach to life management and general productivity. However, I've got stuck on many attempts to use it, because of a multitude of issues, issues which other users / testers, have also asked the developers to implement: Syncing with iCal. Why? That would enable me to sync todays to-do list with a multitude of other things, including my cell phone. I don't want or need a PDA. PDA's are for business people. And geeks. Normal people just don't need PDA's after cell phones have become to refined and advanced. Interface overhaul. The interface is too cumbersome to use daily. I cannot be scaled down in any way. Easier input of tasks. For example via a menu in finder. More frequent updates. This would bring more attention and momentum to the application. And a chance for them to weed out the illegal serial numbers floating everywhere. Let's face reality. A lower price. Follow the market - sell more! The developers response is, and always has been, a combination of denial, know-all, conservatism.
