MPlayer OSX Extended | Oct 19 2009 |
NYMPHE Very good player. I always prefer it to VLC. I was using Movist for a long time but some times it does crash and doesn't work properly. The only thing which I miss from Movist is that in Movist the subtitles in wide screen movies are on the bottom side of the screen, not the movie. To be more clear about that; if some movie is wide screen and you have horizontal black bars on the top and bottom side of the screen, Movist shows the subtitles there, whereas Mplayer shows them directly on the movie. Is there any possible way of utilizing the whole screen at Mplayer? (Version rev12)

NYMPHE I don't understand why they don't release a point version like 0.6.5 to rescue us, Snow Leopard users, from the huge memory leak. If I want to watch a movie of more than 1 GB, I have to stop in the middle of the movie, quit Movist, and then re-open it. Are there any nightly builds for Movist? Or can someone build it from the available code? Because I can't. :) Just this review can show how good Movist is. I simply don't want to go back to VLC or MPlayer Extended. (Version 0.6.4)

NYMPHE Unfortunately it is quite bad. If you pause the movie, you'll see everything lags at the system. I am sure it is easy to fix, and hopefully they update it soon, because Movist is really very good movie player. In the project site, you can enter this problem at the "issues" page. http://code.google.com/p/movist/issues/detail?id=74 (Version 0.6.4)

MenuMeters | Aug 29 2009 |
NYMPHE You probably didn't read developers site: http://www.ragingmenace.com/index.html MenuMeters 1.3 does not run on Snow Leopard because the process that hosts the MenuMeters plugins (SystemUIServer) is now 64-bit. There are a number of subtle 64-bit bugs in MenuMeters so more than a simple recompile is needed. I'm working on an update to MenuMeters and expect to have a public beta shortly after Snow Leopard retail availability. (Version 1.3)

Illuminated Clock Screensaver | Aug 25 2009 |
NYMPHE It is very nice, but unfortunately it stays on my 4:3 monitor very small. I am seeing that the background is 16:9 or widescreen, but it doesn't make sense to have a small clock, where all of the items in the clock are vectoral. I really would like to use this instead of ClockSaver, but transparency and big clock circle are good positive points of ClockSaver, which are missing in Clock Screensaver. (Version 1.3)

NYMPHE The 1.0.5 version adds following details: - 1.0.5: Removed transparency and repackaged for Leopard This screen saver is the best screen saver I've ever used. Now I don't understand the removal of transparency, which was quite helpful. You were able to see whether you've received a notification from Adium, Mail or System itself... Now black screen with clock, this is not good. Thank god 1.0.4 is still available. I hope the programmer puts this funcionality again. (Version 1.0.4)

VLC Media Player | Dec 10 2008 |
NYMPHE After buying a 40" LCD, I began to watch HD series and MKV files. English is not my native language and I always prefer to watch the movies with subtitles. Usually I use Mplayer and Mplayer Extended. But after trying to watch some MKV movies and HD series, I realized that Mplayer can not sync video with sound. My macbook looked like a old G4 and the video was too slow. This thing happens on an aluminim 2.0 Ghz Macbook. VLC plays those files perfectly. I gave for easy of use 3 stars, because sometimes it is really cluttered.. It could stay beta forever. Google Mail is in beta phase too, but it doesn't change the fact that Gmail is the best web mail service right now. (Version 0.9.8a)

NYMPHE It's a great utility. But the brushed metal interface is too old and too big. I mean the border of the window of course. Apple MacBook SMC Firmware Updater | Oct 27 2006 |
NYMPHE Actually, I think this firmware update simply bypasses the shutdown problem. I ve seen lots of pictures, in which the cable was melted enough. Ok, fine, I am going to install it, but how should I know if my cable burns and mets inside? If I had the RSS problem, I wouldn't use this firmware, because I couldn't demonstrate the problem again. And I don't want a notebook which has got some loose wires... (Version 1.1)

GAZMAN By keeping the operating temperature lower, it shouldn't get to the point where the heatsink is expanding so much that it makes contact with the sensor cable, causing the short circuit. Having said that, I've had my heatsink replaced under warranty. I still installed this update. The fans seem to be spinning slightly faster at idle, which should keep temps down. (Version 1.1)

Apple MacBook SMC Firmware Updater | Oct 27 2006 |
SJJ_PUBLIC Are we sure the issue really was the heatsink? Certainly that *seemed* like a solution, but perhaps it was not the real solution or a complete solution? Perhaps replacing the heatsink only reduced the problem, with the underlying problem remaining, such that given enough high processor use it would still shut down, just requiring more than before. This is purely speculation on my part, mind you, but Apple is recommending firmware update 1.1 even for those who had the heatsink replaced (indeed, even for those with MacBooks not exhibiting the problem now.) I think it's safe to say that you should install this update. FYI, I installed it on my MacBook which was not exhibiting the problem and have seen no problems with it. (Version 1.1)

NYMPHE Actually, Skype 1.5 has great video functionality. The video quality was awesome. I tested it on an ibook and macbook. You can resize the video and you can use it on fullscreen too. You can anytime turn video on or off, which isn't allowed on ichat or yahoo messenger, I guess.. However, Skype takes all of the performance of the processor. I don't know why, but on an ibook 1 Ghz, I couldn't do anything else. Maybe because of the superior video quality.. But on the other side, on the macbook I've heard the fan, which runs continously. I couldn't come back to window from fullscreen modus. I had to force quit. maybe because the system was too busy to respond... I hope the future versions will be out of these problems.. NYMPHE Actually, I kinda like the candybar messaging. What we need is tabbed chat. I've tried with my 12" Powerbook and a logitech webcam (which is supported by macam) to connect a macbook and a pc. Both performs very well. But I have to admit, that the the webcam view is not scalable and it is slower than iChat. I begin to think it is nearly impossible to reach the fps of iChat in any other IM application. I am very happy to see a well supported, and problem free webcam solution for mac between pcs.
