OmniWeb

NICKORCHARD  OmniWeb needs a radical makeover to bring up to the standard that end users want. OmniGroup MUST give the user the option of using visual tabs as well as standard tabs. Even Safari can have the option of visual tabs with the aid of the free plugin SafariStand.

The drawer system the tabs uses is dated and looks odd on the modern more visually appealing OSX we have now. The tabs should use a sidebar like iTunes or the Finder or very similar to what Safari looks like with SafariStand installed.

Don't get me wrong OmniWeb is a great browser but these things are what is keeping me from using it day to day. That and the fact is costs too much money when you can add the same functionality to Safari and Firefox for free.

iToner
Feb 1 2008

NICKORCHARD  To get iToner working with the latest iPhone software 1.1.3 try this workaround which is posted on the developers forums.

1. Launch iToner and connect your iPhone

2. Use iToner to remove any existing ringtones.

3. Import any of your ringtones into iTunes if they are not already there.

4. Select your ringtone in iTunes and choose "Convert Selection to AAC" from the Advanced menu. (if this option in the Advanced menu says "Convert Selection to [any other format], then open iTunes preferences, click on Advanced, then Import. Then change the "Import using" menu option to AAC. After this the item in the Advanced menu will refer to AAC.

5. Drag this converted file to your Desktop.

5. In the Finder, change the file extension from ".m4a" to ".m4r". Select the file and then go to the File menu to Get Info. Change the file extension to m4r. You should get a dialog box confirming the change. Change the filename for this file only (you will have to do that for each ringtone, but if you go ahead and say yes to using m4r for all aac files, all of your audio files will be converted to ringtone format).

6. You can now use iToner to sync the ringtone back over.

NICKORCHARD  I'm finding the GrowlMail.bundle breaks Leopard's Mail. It launches and retrieves mail OK but Mail doesn't respond to mouse clicks and has to be force-quit.

I have to invoke Dashboard first then the Time Machine widget - 2 clicks. Bad Times. :(

Unless I'm missing something this widget gets my vote as one of the most useless ones I've seen yet. Maybe some people are actually using OS X primarily from Dashboard instead of the traditional Desktop environment?

MATHIEU.T  I'm not using Time Machine every day (I hope it's the same thing for you) so, I don't like to have icons that I don't use a lot in my dock. That's why I did this widget, to launch Time Machine from my Dashboard instead to go in my Application Folder.

SKYRAPH  Yes you're right, its a simple terminal command, but some people are very unfamiliar with the terminal and just want simplicity of use, that's what i tried to implement in this very simple application.

NICKORCHARD  Then maybe have a tab sidebar that has the option to be hidden or not. The main reason for me not liking the tab drawer is the fact it uses to much screen real estate. I understand a tab sidebar with do so to a certain extent so why not give the user the option of having standard tabs like Safari as well as a tab sidebar both of which can be hidden or not.

NICKORCHARD  PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE get rid of the UGLY DATED tab drawer and make a sidebar like Mail, Finder and iTunes or even introduce normal tabs like Safari as well.

This is the only thing that is stopping me from using OmniWeb.

M-RICK  The interest of TabDrawer is to be able to hide it unlike iTunes and Mail, and also to have a preview a web page.

OmniWeb has been the very first browser to introduce this feature and all the others are copying, begining MS IE 7.

And if you read the doc and known how to use it or very tried it, you would have seen that it is possible to have tabs only without preview ...

Just click the second tabs icon in the top of the sidebar.

RANDOMDUDE  The screen real estate is a deal-breaker for me as well. Most web sites are fine, but sometimes I've got to use horizontal scrolling. Not cool. If they're not going to use a standard tab bar option, maybe I'll try OW again when I eventually upgrade my 12" to a 13.3"

M-RICK  Hey guys, just send a feedback to OmniGroup from OmniWeb. They take care about every feedbacks and give an answer to everyone.

After all the aim is to make a good product that please everyone.

Me I like the tab like this because i never met the your needs, but that true that i have a 20" screen ...

But i miss an RSS reader as good as the Sage extension for Firefox or the built in RSS of Flock.

ERIK.SWANSON  The not-so-obvious advantage of the drawer over "normal tabs" is that you can scroll them—you're not limited to only having easy access to the first few tabs.

(After getting used to this, I've grown to hate browsers that force me to use a clunky pulldown menu to access "extra" tabs.)
