NEIL_M The Airport menu does not do the same thing. If you cannot see that, it is little wonder you cannot work out what to do with it. I use it to choose the best channel for my router - to find out the channels of all nearby neighbours routers - thereby avoiding overlap > interference > subpar/poor wifi performance. Finding out about local wifi noise, from cordless phones, microwave ovens, etc. - to optimise the placement of the router. I run this weekly to health check my network. (Version 1.1.7)

NEIL_M This was freeware/donationware from the beginning - I used iStumbler, AirMoose, etc - AirRadar is much better IMHO. I wanted the addition of vendor info - it was added almost immediately - I paid the $9.95 donation immediately. Why is it so hard for some people to acknowledge the value of an app, the work the developer has done and make a small contribution? It is obvious that so few donated, far fewer than might be expected - they have to now make it shareware. (Version 1.1.7)

NEIL_M Yes, same problems here..... I started using this to interact with MailTags, however the demo has a limit of 10 tags, not 10 tags, multiple files, but a total of 10 tags, it worked okay-ish, but not enough to really tell - so I used the built in store and bought the full version $20, to really get an idea - mistake. I thought if MailTags and iGTD mentioned it would be worth the $20 - mistake. Tagbot looks like the iPhoto keyword manager from bullstorm.se (http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/23240/keyword-manager) - but has none of the functionality of the superb bullstorm product. I find Tagbot is now unusable/non-functional. NEIL_M This is quite funtional, but I am unsure why it is $20 better than these 2 freeware options; SMARTreporter (http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/14825/smartreporter) - sits in the menu, runs in the background, even emails you when a failure is detected. SMARTctl (http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/23777/smartctl) - sits in the menu and seems to give all the available SMART info. (Version 1.2)

SMART Utility | May 6 2008 |
APPLE4EVER NEIL_M: I can address that. SMARTreporter- while very good at what it does- can miss problems when they are small. It relies on the overall PASS/FAIL of SMART, which is very conservative and usually is only trigged when the drive is so bad it can't be even used. SMART Utility will alert you to failures before they get bad, allowing you to back up sooner and recover more data. SMARTctl does use the more extensive test- but it only displays everything in text format in a menu. SMART Utility displays all the data in a easy to read format, also highlights failing attributes in red, and provides an easy to read prefail warning in yellow or red. It also hasn't been updated for over a year (and is using an out of date version of smartctl). I hope that answers your questions and shows you why SMART Utility is worth the money. plugDaemon | Dec 11 2007 |
NEIL_M DOM - "Like, if this is some sort of proxy that hides your real IP address on the Internet (for example) I wish it would just say so! " Sounds like you are looking an "Anonymizing proxy server" - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anonymizer http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proxy_server A proxy server that removes identifying information from the client's requests for the purpose of anonymity is called an anonymizing proxy server or anonymizer. Proxies can also be installed by online criminals, in order to eavesdrop upon the dataflow between the client machine and the web. All accessed pages, as well as all forms submitted, can be captured and analyzed by the proxy operator. For this reason, passwords to online services (such as webmail and banking) should be changed if an unauthorized proxy is detected. Intercepting proxy server An intercepting proxy (often incorrectly called "transparent proxy") combines a proxy server with a Gateway. Connections made by client browsers through the gateway are redirected through the proxy without client-side configuration (or often knowledge). Intercepting proxies are commonly used in businesses to prevent avoidance of acceptable use policy, and to ease administrative burden, since no client browser configuration is required. It is often possible to detect the use of an intercepting proxy server by comparing the external IP address to the address seen by an external web server, or by examining the HTTP headers on the server side. plugDaemon | Dec 11 2007 |
NEIL_M If you visit the developer's site; Plugdaemon acts as a "dumb proxy", forwarding a TCP/IP stream from a port on one host to a possibly different port on a separate host. It runs as a daemon to reduce latency in setting up a connection, and optionally logs every connection via syslog" You could also use google to understand it or find out what plug-gw is. http://articles.techrepublic.com.com/5100-6350-1053294.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proxy http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Load_balancing_%28computing%29 But if you don't know and can't find out - chances are you don't need it DOM. BENR Funky workaround: install the 10.5 Server Admin Tools, rename the "Server" folder to "Server 10.5" (or whatever) then simply copy the 10.4.11 "Server" folder next to it from a Tiger Mac. Rename it if you're fussy. Result: I have two sets of tools in two folders ("Server 10.5" and "Server 10.4.11"). They seem to co-exist happily, and I admin both Tiger and Leopard servers. Of course, you need an old Tiger Mac hanging around to do this. I've backed up a .zip archive of the Tiger "Server" folder for the future. (Version 10.5.3)

NEIL_M I tried this and it functions. However at 0.b03 there really isn't any functionality on offer, that isn't available for free from reference tables on the internet for RAL. If it was possible to use OS X's built-in colour picker for example, then it might change the situation. There are some really functional and good value shareware applications available for $10 - at 0.b03 and with these limited features - I can't see it being worth $10. I can't see why a conversion table lookup needs to be 1.8Mb either. (Version 0.b03)

Desktop Transporter | Nov 10 2006 |
NEIL_M I have downloaded and tried this, it works pretty well. But it is $30 for a 2 machine license, not that cheap. I guess, a license @ $30 x 5 to make 10 seats, would be $150. I tried to find the cost for additional licenses on their website but couldn't. A 10 user license for Apple Remote Desktop (ARD) is $299, This version "kind of does" what Apple Remote Desktop (ARD) 1.0 could do, but ARD 3.0 is far beyond this or any other offering, in terms of features. So it's not worth comparing them. I'm not even sure whether I'm convinced it is better than VNC. •VNC is open source, cross platform and free. •Additionally it is built right into OS X, authorisations are set in the same system pref, as Desktop. •VNC uses the same ports as Apple Remote Desktop or Apple Remote Desktop uses the standard VNC ports, depending upon your bias. •runs as in the background, being part of the OS Transporter is an app, which you need to run on all machines. Chicken of the VNC (COVNC) (http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/9517) - is an excellent VNC client for OS X. •it also uses Bonjour (zero config) I use COVNC within my LAN and it is rock solid, I also use COVNC over a VPN and it also works well. A point to note is that Bonjour does not work over a VPN (without extra workarounds) so this feature is mute - you will need to plug in the LAN IP, for any of these apps. • I don't see the option to manually input Ip addresses in Transporter - you can in ARD and VNC. As per ARD, I do like the screen overview Transporter has, which VNC doesn't, but $30 I can live without. I think this is a difficult niche for Transporter, on both sides you have 2 options both built-in OS X natively. VNC is free for unlimited computers, Win, Linux, OS X. ARD aimed at proper support and administration. Overall I think Transporter has to really think about it's features - to justify it's license structure and price tag. (Version 2.0)

NEIL_M Tiger compatibility CCC 2.3 currently works on Tiger, however you must be running at least 10.4.2. I am still working on an upgrade that will introduce many long-awaited features. For now, clone away with version 2.3. Intel-PowerPC Considerations CCC 2.3 is not yet available as a Universal binary, however it does run via Rosetta on the new Intel Macs. A word of caution: Apple currently does not support booting an Intel Mac from an OS installation that came from a PowerPC Mac, and vice versa. Until Apple provides a Universal OS that is capable of booting both architectures, do not clone a PowerPC Mac to an Intel Mac or vice versa. User files, of course, can be copied between the two machines. If you get a new Intel Macintosh, consider using the Migration Assistant to transfer your data to the new machine (Version 2.3)

RICHTHEONE Neil_m, feature lists are important parts of the evaluation of an application. Knowing a product's current and future expected functionality makes a big difference when chosing the right tool. Besides, the developers at Mindre Panda are of course also directly mailed about these requests. And thanks to the post here at Macupdate they don't have to recieve one hundred suggestions about the same features every day, because readers of this review will know that this has been discussed already. Instead, new readers will be able to add there ideas and comments to the list, which would not have been possible if it was only mailed to the developers. Neil_m, if you don't like the feature requests mixed with the other review topics, I suggest you just don't look at them. (Version 1.1)
