About mwschmeer
I'm a writing teacher at huge community college in the Midwest. I've been a Mac user since 1984, and my favorite Mac of all time is my beloved Performa 636CD-DOS Compatible, even though my main Gigabit Ethernet G4 is jealous.

HOFMAN  Supporting Tiger would mean NO new development for anybody, it only holds back improvements for everybody else (which is now almost everybody). So supporting Tiger would mean NO difference for Tiger users and a HUGE difference for everybody else. And you can still use version 1.2.7 on Tiger.

MWSCHMEER  Another stellar update, and it's still all good! This is by far my go-to word processor. As a college professor, I truly appreciate the new Notes function--now I can easily add in-text comments with a few quick keyboard shortcuts. Yes, I'd love to see footnotes/endnotes, columns, and floating images, but as the developer points out on his web site, those features are outside the bounds of what he's attempting to do with Bean.

This is a great app, and it just keeps getting better.

MWSCHMEER  Dear God, and they still give this away for free? Definitely one of the best raw text editors out there. Between this and Bean, my writing needs are met (okay, I'll admit a softspot for WriteRoom, too).

If you need to do something with plain text, this is the tool for you. And if you are a really hard core coder, then the step up to BBEdit will really blow you away.

Quite simply, this is the best freeware text editor.

****.

MWSCHMEER  Out of all the many iTunes alternatives out there, this one takes the cake. It's small footprint, extended feature set, and gorgeous HUD-styled interface makes Vox hard to beat. While it lacks a "saved playlist" feature, it's main draw is the ability to drop a folder of files on the icon and have them start playing them either in order of the file name or in shuffle mode. It's real boon is the ability to quickly play a downloaded mp3 file (although it can play most other sound formats supported by QuickTime).

It's been rock-solid on my machines--an Intel Core Duo iMac, and a G4 Gigabit Ethernet, both running 10.4.11.

This is definitely an application that is a must on my systems. I can't wait to see what the developer does in future builds.

MWSCHMEER  Simply one of the best styled word processors for the Mac. Sure, it doesn't have all the bells and whistles of Nisus Express or even iText Express, but then, how often do you really need all the bells and whistles?

This is the right tool for writing 95% of the time if you are not in school writing documented research papers. And even then, you could probably crib along OK.

I'm sure I'm not alone when I say that this is simply one of the best free pieces of software out there. It is one of the first apps I install on any Mac I use; I even carry it around on a thumb drive for when I am away from my home Mac (note to developer: might want to make an option to save/use the preference file from a local directory).
