MTCOBRA  I downloaded version 2.4.2, and when I ran the program, it no longer said "Pro Version." When I click on About Image Tricks I'm told I have version 2.4.1. When I click on "Check for Updates" I'm told I don't need to update because I have version 2.4.2.

Me thinks there's one or two more "minor bugs" to fix.

But actually, was not that impressed. Thanks to all of the two of you for pointing me in the right direction. I really expected to find it (the option) to be more local than in General Preferences.

Wireless Mouse Software Update
Oct 27 2009

MTCOBRA  May I safely assume that this upgrade is not for the wireless mouse called Mighty Mouse that came with my machine which has been upgraded to Snow Leopard? Were it not for the picture of the new wireless mouse, I'd sure think this was referring to the old wireless mouse, and you'd figure that an upgrade would apply to the old wireless mouse, but I'm guessing not. Things are not always crystal clear to me. Sorry.

MenuCalendarClock iCal

*****

MTCOBRA  Just installed 4.1 (after quitting then renaming my previous version just in case) and am glad to report no hang-up. So far working flawlessly on iMac 2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo running Mac OS X 10.6.1 Snow Leopard. Previous comments indicating lock-ups were trying, perhaps, to run a 64-bit 4.1 on a Mac still running Leopard. I recommend not upgrading until you've taken the Snow Leopard plunge.

MenuCalendarClock iCal
Oct 15 2009

JCHERIAN  I am running Mac 10.5.8 on MacBookPro2,2 and MenuCalendarClock iCal 4.1 and I found that the program would consume all free memory. I logged into an admin account (that I rarely use) and found that there are no hangups or huge memory usage there. So I think there is an issue with how the program is reading the iCal file in my profile. Deleting my profile's preferences file net.objectpark.MenuCalendarClock.plist did not help. Reverting back to 4.0.0 did. I will submit this as an email to the developer though the web site http://www.objectpark.net/mcc.html indicates that they provide email support for registered users and I am only registered to 3.x and still undecided about upgrading to 4.x.

So here comes Version 2.0 and I'm required to pay ANOTHER $9.95 for it? Hey, it was paid for once!

MTCOBRA  1. If you are upgrading, remove your previous copy and the THREE associated files from your computer before downloading this version. I tried 'replacing' the app and had to force quit it twice before I read the tip about removing older versions.

2. During the process of downloading selected wallpapers, you're asked if you want to make this your current wallpaper. Answering YES doesn't completely do it. You'll have to go to System Preferences/Desktop and Screen saver. Click on any setting (fit to screen, etc.) and you'll get your new wallpaper.

3. Beautiful pictures!! Program is not yet smooth as silk, but worth the trouble.

Wallsaver
Sep 12 2009

MTCOBRA  Doesn't work if you're using Camouflage. If the icons are hidden by Camouflage, the chosen screensaver will not display.

Odd: While trying out Wallsaver (with Camouflage running), and finding it didn't work, I Zapped the app and all associated files. Then I noticed my screensaver flashed, and on a hunch, I told Camouflage to Show Icons. Bingo, the program was running. I guess the script had run it course, and deleting the program had no effect (until I reboot, I assume). Odd.

But since I really enjoy Camouflage, I'll not be re-downloading Wallsaver.

Otherwise, good program - just makes you kinda seasick when your desktop is moving around.

LaunchBar

MTCOBRA  You have to pay for an upgrade (from 4 to 5) if you want the Snow Leopard version. 30-day trial. I downloaded the program Aug 28, but already the 30-days are up. Upgrade cost: Varies depending on how you pay. PAYPAL will cost you over $3.00 additional sur-charge. Illinois residents pay $.78 sales tax. The add-on fees just keep on coming! Snow Leopard has released its first revision 10.6.1. Will LaunchBar want me to pay for another upgrade?

ROBOTANK  That's a rather silly post. Fees for PayPal are to cover the fees the developer has to pay to PayPal to use it as a payment method, while sales taxes are determined by location and so have nothing whatsoever to do with the developer.

The other nonsensical thing you complain about is the requirement of LB 5 for Snow Leopard compatibility. LaunchBar 5 was in public beta, and therefore under development, long before Snow Leopard came out. You're not paying an upgrade cost just for Snow Leopard compatibility--you're paying it for a new major version upgrade to LaunchBar that includes Snow Leopard compatibility among its numerous other improvements. Do you really expect the developers to make LB 4 Snow Leopard compatible when it's not the current version of the app? If, like me, you find LB to be one of the most useful apps in existence, you won't grudge the upgrade fee (which, by the way, is not excessive). If you don't think LB is that great, then go check out the latest QuickSilver beta or Google QuickSearchBox, both of which are free, and stop whining about non-existent injustices.

I Love Stars
Sep 11 2009

MTCOBRA  Help me out here.... I saw this upgrade to I Love Stars, so I launched my current version thinking it would advise me of the upgrade and I'd pull in the upgrade, but no such notification. So I quit iTunes and proceeded to download directly the 3.2 version. When I tried to replace the old one, it wouldn't, because the older version was in use. I tried to trash the older version but couldn't do that, it was in use. The menu bar stars had disappeared, iTunes was closed, but ILS was still 'in use.'

I'm going to restart my computer THEN move the new version to applications, but this shouldn't be required.

What did I miss/forget? 'case something like this happens again? Oh, CMD/OPT/ESC did not list I Love Stars so I couldn't force-quit. Stumped, but not done yet.

STEVEN GOODHEART  That's weird behavior, for sure. I downloaded this update...it ran for a few seconds, and then quit, disappearing from the menu bar. And indeed, the Force Quit menu didn't show it running.

If you want to clean everything out and start again, I Love Stars only seems to exist in the Application folder, where you installed it, and:

HD:Users:(you):Library:Caches:com.potionfactory.ILoveStars

and

HD:Users:(you):Library:Preferences:com.potionfactory.ILoveStars.plist

...of course, if you had it as a login item, delete it there.

Good luck on figuring this out. I'm curious to see if others can get it to run on Snow Leopard. It won't run on mine.

MTCOBRA  This software is listed as being "free." Yet when you read the 'license agreement you encounter this:

It works fine for me (2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo iMac). Sound is great, even includes a disco-like screen option. I can't read the column headings, however. It's all Greek to me! :-)

It takes, sometimes, several seconds for a station to 'kick in,' and you have to double click on your choice (you'll see a microphone icon appear). Sound is very open and clear. A keeper!

MTCOBRA  In the users guide (available at the developers site) you are informed that using Terminal, you can instruct LazyMouse to disregard, or not apply to certain applications. I found that information very useful when I discovered recently that while LazyMouse was active, my iTunes songs sounded like the needle on the tone arm (remember those, anyone?) was 'hopping.' Not so subtle 'clicks and pops' interfering with the music. I disabled LazyMouse totally, and the problem cleared up. Then I re-enabled the program, but entered the command to ignore iTunes, and I'm once again, a happy camper!

MTCOBRA  It resides as a small menu icon on the top, main menu along with all your other "stuff." When a new item is offered on CheapandSteep, a pop-up (not big) window opens showing the item, then automatically disappears. Or, you can close it if you want to, but it closes quickly enough.

What is great is you can 'filter' this thing. Main use: I'm a guy, so I filter anything for women out, so I am not bothered by notices of women's ski boots, etc.

Unfamiliar with CheapandSteep? Generally items are out-door oriented, such as sun glasses, sleeping bags, ski clothing, tents, etc. High quality merchandise at very discounted prices.

MTCOBRA  Observation and Review:

You launch the program, and everything from your desktop disappears except the Dock and the menu bar on top of your screen. Double-click anywhere on the desktop, and a window appears that has all the files that was on the desktop before. Close the screen, and a clean desktop. Double-click and the window's back. The one icon that's not "listed" on the desktop window is the HD icon itself. Not needed - you're looking at what it opens if you click on it already.

When I first tried it, my desktop changed to an Apple desktop, but I was quickly able to change it back to what I wanted. In addition, the menu icon that's added at the top of your screen's menu bar allows direct access to the desktop/screen savor preferences as well as display preferences.

I like this! I like this a lot!

MTCOBRA  I really enjoy this game. It makes me have to think in terms of moves, but unlike chess, I've only one opponent, and his possible moves are regulated. I think: I move here, he'll have to move there... etc. Even so, running short of time, I'll sometimes use the CHEAT feature, then study it for future games. You can make your own situations/games with this program as well.

Interesting that MacUpdate noted that there was no information relative to this current update from 1.10 to 1.11. Me thinks, looking at the 'more information' or 'get info' that this new version was written back on October 25th, not in November. Me thinks the creator ups the version # when another application is updated, just to get it re-listed on MacUpdate's updates. Exposure, exposure, exposure. Nevertheless, it's a good, one-on-computer game, and I'm glad I have it in my games arsenal.

MTCOBRA  I've used Plaxo in the recent past until I found that it was causing some unusual effects to my Address Book. The Nick Name field was being altered. If my address book contained, say, two Charles, then the nick name of the first that I has set as 'Chuck' was ok, but the nick name of the second was changed to 'Chuck2.' Additional Charles's were numbered as well (3, 4, etc.)

In using SerialMailer, where I wanted to use the nick name within the body of emails, that numbering was unacceptable. 'Hi, Chuck3:' just wasn't the way I wanted it to be. Frustrated me until I found that by getting rid of Plaxo, the problem went away. I had to re-name all the numbered nick names, but they stayed as entered after that.

If any of you have found that Plaxo no longer does this altering, do reply and let me know. The other features were great. I just could not have it altering my nicks!

DCOLACE  Plaxo for Mac has never altered the data that is synced. What you might be remembering is that older versions of Plaxo for Mac would create custom labels for things like email and phone numbers with things like "work 2" and "home 3" to match the multiple phone and email slots shown in the Plaxo Online interface. The past several versions of Plaxo for Mac have done away with these numbered, custom labels so that software that works with the standard, Apple provided, "Home" and "Work" labels will work correctly.

BILLY THE BIKER  I would like to reinstall Plaxo, because I think it would be handy, but I had big problems with duplication in my Address Book when I installed it last summer, and had to manually go through twice deleting dupes. If I knew that it wouldn't happen again I would give it another try. MobileMe has worked the bugs out, so I am continuing to use it for the time being.

MTCOBRA  I downloaded the cluster of files - consists of a folder with many files that installs into the Applications Folder. It includes an uninstaller as well. When I saw that many of the files were .exe files, I used the uninstaller and zapped the whole package. Interesting to me, the zapper zapped the folder, leaving NOTHING behind - not a trace in my trash to delete, just POOF!

I didn't try the program, because to me, .exe spells PC. -mtc

Get Tube
Aug 12 2008

MTCOBRA  There is no help available for Get Tube. When you open it, you see the icons for Firefox and Safari. Click on either and a message displays "No Video or Connection Disabled..." It SHOULD read: "No Video or Connection Detected..." (Something lost in the French translation.)

To get Get Tube to work, load up one of the browsers, go to YouTube, select a movie, THEN when you click on the browser icon in Get Tube, you'll be told the name of the movie, and a button to download it is available - the Video has been detected. Preference settings tell Get Tube where you want it saved. Quick and easy.

PDFpen

MTCOBRA  Interesting. I'm looking at the site for PDFpen 3.5, yet when I do Get Info, About, or Check for Updates on my PDFpen 3.4.2, it reports that I have the latest version.

Perhaps the inability to detect new versions is one of the things corrected or added in this new, 3.5 edition?

I recall having had to PUSH the update (rather than PULL) the last time I updated PDFpen.

MTCOBRA  Took MacUpdate's advice and contacted the developer for assistance. After an exchange of email, the problem was traced to a permission level in Library/Applications Support. I can now begin my 30-day trial evaluation of this software.

Here is the step-by-step solution provided by AceReader Pro's pro, Jim:

1. Double click on your harddrive icon.

2. Double click on the "Library" folder.

3. Do a "Get Info" on "Applications Support" and open the "Sharing & Permissions:" triangle.

4. You need to have "Read & Write" permissions for "admin". If not, click on the lock, enter your password and change the permissions to "Read & Write".

Worked for me!!!

MTCOBRA  When I launch this program, I get a "box" with the following message (punctuation is quoted exactly):

Insufficient access privileges.

Login as the user that installed "AceReadeer Pro".

Get Info on the AceReader Pro folder.

Change the "Others:" permissions to "Read & Write".

Press "Apply to enclosed items...".[sic]

When I click on "OK" the box closes, and the program quits.

I do not understand the message, nor what to do about it.

ROY VAN DER WONING  One has to wonder though what business an application of this sort has writing in the system wide library folder (/Library) as opposed to the user library folder (~/Library). Just a thought.

MTCOBRA  Please disregard my earlier comment. I was expecting to receive a username/password from the creators of Stumbi that would allow me to use their software.

Instead the username/password that the program requests are the username/password that Stumble uses. Once I got that through my thick head, the program worked, and continues to provide to Safari users the same feature that I could only use before on FireFox.

I am now impressed, and apologize to all for my mistake.

MTCOBRA  After installing, paying the $4.00, creating a username and password ('Settings' on the Stumpi menu added to Safari's menu bar), everytime I click on 'Stumble' (same menu) I get window stating 'Incorrect username or password.'

Not impressed so far. Did I miss something somewhere???

MTCOBRA  Beautiful game, but it would not let me change from dealing 3 at a time to 1 at a time. Registered on the interface display, but didn't "take" in the game as played. A bug? or did I miss something?

JAN BUCHHOLZ  To the developer:

Hi, thank you very much for the the quick fix. I first tried to reach you thru the contact form at your web site but got an error when submitting the message (tried several times using Safari 3.1).

So, maybe this needs a fix, too ;-)

SOLITAIRE FOREVER  Oh wow, you're right! And I thought everything was going smoothly since no one was writing to me.

It was working a few days ago. The host for my web site handles the "contact" page. I just e-mailed him and told him the problem. Hopefully he gets it working again real soon.
