MRUBEN  I too just updated to 10.5.3. It did the usual double-restart after installation. It did NOT mess up any file permissions.

No problems or issues so far. All seems well on my system (Aluminum iMac 24"/2.4GHz).

Microsoft Office 2008

*....

MRUBEN  Still a piece of junk after 12.1 update.

Two main problems:

(1) STILL doesn't play well with Spaces; splash screen AND your document open in the current space, and then only after the document is open does Word switch to its proper space. And even then, the formatting palette is blank until you click on it. Also, when Word is already open and you open a new document from a different Space, sometimes Word loses track of the documents and you can't see one of them.

(2) STILL ridiculously slow upon startup. Actual startup of the app is a little slower now, but once it's supposedly already started up, the interface is unresponsive for the first minute or two, with constant spinning beachballs.

Remember the infamous Office 4.2.1 (with Word 6) for the Classic Mac OS? Well, Office 2008 is shaping up to be the WORST MS office produce since that.

MRUBEN  Don't blame the developer for your own lack of attention. From the app's icon to the developer's home page, to the easy availability on the home page of the product manual, it's totally obvious that this is for the Apple Remote. You should assume that it WON'T work with other remotes, not that it WILL.

MRUBEN  POS. Installer is dog-slow. Word is still launches slowly, and has the spinning beach ball immediately after launch.

And Office STILL doesn't play nice with Spaces!!!

Get it together Microsoft - if you're going to be a rapacious, monopolistic company with a CEO devoid of ideas, at least you could still write some decent code.

Ugh.

MRUBEN  Finally was able to connect to Micromat's FTP server, BUT...

... I'm on a 6+ Mbps broadband connection, and the file is downloading at only 10kB/sec - that's dial-up speeds.

C'mon Micromat, this isn't 1997 - can you at least have a mirror for your files. Sheesh!

BIGDAVE56  Whew! I thought it was just me. I got about 6-10K on two different broadband connections. FWIW, I had just downloaded an update of about the same size from another developer over the same wifi network. That one downloaded at 384K.

MRUBEN  Is anyone able to connect to Micromat's server to download this update? I sure can't.

I wish Apple would find a different partner for this type of software - I've had it with Micromat.

FYREFLYE  My Speed Download is stalling on the connection. Since most Mac owners have AppleCare there may just be too much traffic on the server right now.

MRUBEN  Leopard is fantastic so far - my iMac aluminum (2.4GHz 24") was fast already, but it's much faster under Leopard - Web pages load slightly faster; Mail is much, much faster; and Cover Flow (in both the Finder and iTunes) are lightning fast.

In addition, I don't know why, but text/font display in Safari is greatly improved - more readable.

MRUBEN  Another benefit of this program - it's about 1/20th the file size of GIMP.

DP-G4-450GUY  GIMP and Seashore are two different-goal applications.

GIMP is like Photoshop.

Seashore is a drawing app like Illustrator (very, very lite.)

GIMP has so many features crammed into it that it naturally has a much larger file-size.

AMAKE  Yeah, it also has about 1/20 the functionality.

And to the other commenter: No, actually Seashore is NOT like Illustrator at all. Illustrator is for vector graphics; Photoshop, GIMP, and Seashore are for bitmap graphics (with some, limited vector capabilities).

Flip4Mac WMV Player

MRUBEN  This is a fantastic app, because it allows you to play most Windows Media (.wmv, .wma, .asf) files in the Quicktime Player and with the Quicktime Web browser plugin. Not only are you freed of MS software, but you can pause, fast forward, rewind, and jump to different points in the media file much, much more easily than in Windows Media Player.

And now that the WMV Player is free (the import/export functions still cost money), I can't see any reason not to use WMV Player instead of Windows Media Player.

I should also note that I believe I was the first consumer to notify Flip4Mac of the WMV Player 2.0-Quicktime 7.0.4 conflict, and Flip4Mac fixed the problem within 24 hours of being notified.
