MRGLSMRC this software isan elaborate front end for web-based google translation services. i might try this sometime but i dont understand why ishould give jalada the cash for googles work when i can just use the url for free. to the minister in latin america-- why did you goto a country where you don't understand and can't be understood without an assistant? what makes you think you are being understood now in a persuasive way with this e-service? please understand that i admire your determination to spread the word of god but translation is more than just swapping words-- it is cultural and gestural and so many nuanced things where technology is merely a crutch. spanish is not a hard language to learn when you are immersed in it. i do use translation software myself for business purposes when i am getting a poor response from emails in english from a foreign developer. i use it when i want to show some europeanthat i am willing to go the extra mile to be understood byhim so translation services have their purposes.and jalada is as good a company for software as any. i know because i play with their fractal generator. but i do translation via two apps that are more appropriate and cheaper. i use kavaservices which operates on text in various ways besides translation. also i use the devonagent browser with instant google translation of webpages built in. i am guessing that jalada's excellent product covers a larger gamutof languages than i need to use but on thos occassions where i want to see an arabic webpage i can just visit or some such without a forty dolar front end. if the folks at jalada want to give me a reviewer's copy i will be glad togive their product a serious workout but presently i am disinclined to find it more useful than googles own web interface for the google service that jalada uses. MRGLSMRC apparently you are defending adobe. you claim this is apples fault and apple does 'not want flash.' this is factually incorrect. please read the article in ars. basically there are rules regarding iphone development that don't apply to other platforms. these give the iphone a security advantage and also give apple control over what's sold and why. MRGLSMRC it is unfortunate that apple and adobe are having a tiff right now which is covered in ars technica. i sure would like a version of shockwave that can run in 64-bit mode in snow leopard. i also want a version of flash that runs in the iphone browser. let's hope these two giants can come to a corporate understanding because so many of us have large software investments in both companies and this erodes our confidence in both brands. if private industry can't get things right under capitalism, then it becomes pragmatic to avoid expensive proprietary software and search for open-source solutions for enterprise. these companies should know better than to gerry-rig their own products. ILGAZ Well, I am not defending Adobe but iPhone/Flash thing is rather political/commercial issue. It has nothing to do with battery use or any similar thing, even including Adobe's mismanagement. Flash Lite 3 and recently, actual desktop Flash absolutely runs fine under Symbian, Android, Windows Mobile. While I am a Symbian user, I can't claim coding such thing for Symbian is easier than iPhone/iPod. Symbian coding is awfully hard since you have to support 100s of different devices even from different brands. So, simply Apple does not WANT Flash on iPhone. It is just like the Opera issue. THOMAS STROMBERG As mentioned elsewhere, this utility does not change any of your settings, but merely provides feedback on services such as OpenDNS which may be faster for you. As far as MU checking this project out, it's my 20% project, and fully open-source. See the source code for yourself! Each of the candidate nameservers, other than your ISP's, has been reviewed. namebench does test to make sure that commonly used sites such as Google and Paypal are not hijacked, and reports if it sees any other suspicious activity with candidate nameservers including your ISP's. One note: The Mac OS X frontend on the current version (0.9.0) does not have congestion detection enabled, so the result quality is somewhat degraded if you have a very slow connection or are downloading large files in the background. This will be rectified in the next release. (Version 0.9)

MRGLSMRC unix based snow leopard machines are very secure. there is no justification for running antivirus software on them or spending fifty bucks to do so. even clanAV which is free and available for the mac is unnecessary because most if not all clamAV virus definitions are for windows machines. for the commenter who said he 'found something' with this application, i am not surprised you got a false positive because antivirus software which doesn't convince you of a non-existent threat won't sell. there is however a definite need for windows based AV software for macusers running bootcamp. that's because your windows disk partition is NOT safe viruses like the mac partition is. there are many useful ways to protect a mac that doesn't involve virus software. you should regularly eliminate tracking cookies. you should perform backups of your system startup disk. you should use passwords for merchants with strong encryption and these should be stored in a password protected database. you should not accept malware plugins to your browser from unknown sources. all of these actions are more important than AV software that costs fifty bucks. unfortunately all of these actions require using your brain and while most people have fifty bucks to throw at imaginary problems, few of us really have the time to think and solve our own problems. that's a pity. SPARROWHAWK I think you miss the point of AV on a Mac (or Linux, BSD etc for that matter). The fact that there are no viruses for Macs is immaterial. What matters is that Macs are perfectly able to receive Windows viruses (via email attachment say, or USV stick), and that they therefore are able to *pass these on* to Windows users in exactly the same way. It is therefore very good practice to scan for viruses on non-Windows platforms. If you were to pass on a Windows virus to a Windows user, at best it would be embarassing, at worst you could seriously compromise a business relationship. Personally I run iAntivirus (always on) and MacScan (monthly scans) to scan for any Mac malware, and ClamXAV to scan for Windows viruses whenever I receive third party files. (Version 1.1.1)

MRGLSMRC you dont seem to be reviewing saft, which is excellent. what you are reviewing is the price of a competing app. and you haven't discussed a single feature. saft uses simbl which is a haxie. not a secret readily available info. i think you are just spamming for glims. glims never sells itself on its own merits but uses a fear close that its competitors are somehow less stable. i see this as a form of spamming which is why i responded here. in fairness to glims i have not taken the time to review it but it must have some merits with so many vocal advocates. i cannot know how well written it is or how it changes the security of my browsing or os without giving it a run through. but saft is so safe and reliable that why should i bother? you complain too much about the modest cost of saft. i like to know how the developer writing free software monetizes his product. how many poor rubes put limewire on their system and took major performance hits because of its little tricky hooks? there aint no free lunch and saft is damn cheap for what it does. but mostly i do use omniweb over safari these days so i am less on top of the issue than i should be to write about it. but all this spamming for glims pisses me off. i don't trust such vacant enthusiasm. one of the things i love about saft is the way it organizes downloads by daily folders. saft had private browsing and thumbnails before safari did. saft manages blocked ad servers extremely well. wheresoever safari goes saft leads the way. i don't give a r@ts @$$ about glims. take it back to your school! MRGLSMRC i just used movement for the first time. it seems to work fine but I am still rebooting the ipod so i don't yet know if my springboard is munged. i will say that movement is not entirely aware of what is going on in a jailbroken ipod. For instance on my ipod the apps are five apps wide, not the four apps wide per page displayed in movement. So at least for me and other users of boss paper, this is not a WYSIWG application. Movement doesn't move apps at all just their representations in the springboard. I have some navigation apps from the itunes store that cannot be loaded into my ipod touch which has a external gps attached to it. itunes resists sending some iphone apps to ipods. MRGLSMRC i have a pathfinder license and have been using it sporadically for about a month. i upgraded to 5.15 this morning and have given it a run-through. I wish pathfinder was as better program than it is. While it looks very pretty and practical after you customize it, i guarantee this application will have a negative effect on your productivity and file management workflow. on my mac mini with 4gigs of ram running 10.5.8, pathfinder has to be force-quitted about every two hours and restarted because it becomes unresponsive. Maybe i have too many external drives for the application to handle--IDK-- but it is much worse than the osx finder. Copying and installing files/ applications seems more sluggish seems more sluggish under pathfinder as well even though the app claims to be 64 bit--more advanced than 'leopard.' Combined with the hangs this is a major annoyance. no onewants to wait for their finder to do things when there is other work to be done. it does not feel multithreaded even if it may be. Lastly pathfinder does not sort displayed files as well as the osx finder does. try to find your latest download in the downloads folder by creation date and you're in for a rude shock because the sorted files are certainly not sorted in a way i can understand. when i use pathfinder i have to resort to an alpha sort--highly inefficient. I bought pathfinder on a special deal offered at a portal a few weeks ago. i had read a positive review in mactidbits that swayed me. and pathfinder looks really nice until you get down to the brass tacks. in conclusion save your pathfinder money and spend it on the snow leopard upgrade with a spanking new 64 bit finder that probably works much better than this. pathfinder is for wankers. COCOATECH I'll address a few of these issues: "pathfinder has to be force-quitted about every two hours and restarted because it becomes unresponsive" You're welcome to post to our support forum and we'll gladly help you try to fix this. A few Path Finder users have reported a similar issue -- we haven't been able to reproduce the problem on our test Macs, so we're relying upon specific user reports to track down the cause. http://forum.cocoatech.com/ "Copying and installing files/ applications seems more sluggish under pathfinder as well even though the app claims to be 64 bit--more advanced than 'leopard.'" Path Finder uses OS X's built-in file copy API, so file copying is demonstrably slower than the Finder I'm uncertain what might be causing it. We'll look into it. "64 bit" is unfortunately not a panacea -- a 64 bit app would likely copy files at the same speed as a 32 bit app. That said, we unexpectedly had to release Path Finder 5.1.5 for Snow Leopard as a 32 bit app since a few of Path Finder's third party frameworks (primarily StuffIt and MobileMe) weren't ready for Snow Leopard's early release. Once these frameworks are available (or we find alternatives to them), 64 bit Path Finder will be ready to go. "I made my remarks because I am quite angry to have wasted not a small amount of money on this app" We offer a fully functional 30 day trial period. The trial counts days of use rather than full calendar days, so if you launch Path Finder once and then come back to it a month later you will still have 29 more days to test it out. We implore everyone to use this trial before buying. (Version 5.1.5)

MRGLSMRC a version of this package comes bundled with fujitsu scansnap printers. i have been using it for a while. this newer product is for twain printers and digital cameras.--it can convert png files to pdf. i cannot therefore use it with my scanner and there is no upgrade path anyway. when i bought my scanner 7 weeks ago i was promised a mail-in rebate upgrade to a full version of an additional scanning package from another company-- this hasn't happenned yet so i look forward to finding out the full capabilities of the fujitsu scanner. but consideringing that abyy is selling a software now that is fairly comparable to my bundled software, you ought consider buying a bundled scanner instead of paying abyy the hundred dollars they want for this program. there is nothing at the abyy site about version history or downloadable files so it is a bit hard to figure out. what most impresses me about abyy is all the languages the ocr engine can handle and that these can be managed in preferences. I do wish i could use it for chess desktop publishing but that doesn't seem to be a choice. more's the pity because this is a russian product and if the russians wont support chess fonts in an ocr engine then who will? i don't think i will ever need to import pdfs into excel spreadsheets in languages like zapotec and turkmeni but these stupid options are available to me. MRGLSMRC so sorry you are angry at the way our govt. spends money. you would do better to post at a political board. your criticisms of this software, while possibly correct, are too vague to be useful to anybody but yourself. there are many possible competing applications and you also failed to explain clearly how you like them better except that they're made by private industry. i don't particularly care about your opinions of nasa either. your mind meanders from topic to topic so you need your medication. after you've recovered, you should actually try out the software that you say you're reviewing, i mean if you're not too busy writing about in generalities you could try using it. candidly i am not sure i like this software more than omnigraffle based on the web pages i've seen made in it. but i am impressed with the idea that it can be the front end of an apache server on one of my mac minis. i don't think the other software you mentioned could do this. MRGLSMRC i can now recommend you try calibre because it runs on my machine without crashing, the code has been reduced by 40 per cent and adequate documentation exists on the web. i will report how well calibre converts ebooks at a future time. (Version 0.5.12)

MRGLSMRC i ran the program after the install. it hung and crashed as i was adding books. i can't be certain it is the programmer's fault because i use safari haxies and there's a lot going on here. at over 100 meg it seems bloated and slow. the documentary material about reader format conversion is non-existant on the programmers wiki. i will wait for the next version and try again.. there's a lot of ebooks out there now and managing them is a good idea. WeatherCal | Mar 24 2009 |
MRGLSMRC i just bought this. the wunderground weather reports it uss seem to be less accurate than my aviation weather desktop widget. nevertheless this is a great planning tool that helps you prepare for events even outside of your immediate area. it is good to know when i am going to a place a where it is raining, eg. and the fact that ical integrates with my ipod touch means that if i synch my touch before leaving the house, i get good traveling info without wasting time. of course the main drawback to this system is that the touch only synchs with one computer, so my daily results remain static unless i set up an ical server at my house, which i never considered doing before. i will wait for iphone OS 3.0 before i dig into that. a minor problem i have with the set up reflects the way these new weather calendars integrates with the 'organized widget' from i slayer which i keep on my desktop. individual calendars are not identified. this is a problem when you have multiple zipcodes and weather forecasts for each day. in ical itself the calendars are color coded to respective zipcodes like manhattan and white plains,ny so this is less of a problem. the result is i have to use ical sometimes and this takes up too much screen real estate. while i recognize this is an apple gui issue and not a barebones gui issue it still amounts to an inconvenience for the end user which needs to be resolved for productivity purposes that would propel sales of this neat little application. Corkboard | Feb 25 2009 |
MRGLSMRC i am testing this out. i like the concept but the software doesn't work right on my machine. i get this error message that i don't understand. when i check functions out to see if these work, eg history, i get crap about evaluation mode, so i can't say what works and what doesn't. i will say it's cheap enough to play with. and i like the idea of corkboard technology in something cheaper than the excellent 'tinderbox.' this 'corkboard' isn't ready for primetime. and there's no direct link to the software foundry from macupdate which leaves me thinking that i won't get any satisfaction from the designers. a real pity. if these guys let me test the actual software and it worked, you'd be reading a different review. no stars. MRGLSMRC i have used this software for 6 years both on the pc and the mac. i am currently a user of the pro ver.5.1.4 for mac and writing this review as i dl 5.1.5. this software has an intelligent interface. the learning curve to understand the software is not steep. and the software does what it promises to do in terms of increasing my reading speed. i don't think i read as fast in real life as i do on the computer though because the words are pumped at me very fast in this app. it compresses time and you have to get into your zone to really appreciate what it does. my minor beef with the software is that it is not universal-- it is powerpc software running through apple's rossetta. i have brought this up with the publisher and he assures me that an intel version will be ready when snow leopard comes out so there won't be a continuity issue. i encourage you to test this software as trialware and decide for yourself if it can help you manage your time by reading faster. you should disregard the review by the n00b who couldn't install the software and griped about it here because it's actually an easy install and the publisher is responsive to emails in a direct and personal way about any sort of problem i have encounter over the years, which mostly consisted of changing my license codes for newer editions. LOUNGE DELUXE Apart from the fact that it's ridiculous this app is still only PPC 3.5 years after the release of the first Intel based Mac, will we have to pay for this Intel version once it's released or will it be a free update/upgrade to existing users? (Version 5.1.8)

MRGLSMRC clearly no leopard user would want or need this. it must be intended for tiger 10.4.11 users. (Version 2008r3)
