MINIMAL DESIGN Is this app dead? I read somewhere that the dev doesn't work on it anymore and it doesn't seem to have been updated in a while... I'm not an update freak, but since I'm investigating which app to chose from all the options out there, I don't want to start with an app that's not actively developed anymore... Any idea? Thanks! XENOPHILE You could try checking out the official Journler site, which has extensive info on the upcoming 2.6 update. Or you could spread rumors about having read that Journler is abandonware. Do you perhaps develop a competing shareware title? (Version 2.5.5)

JQMUSICMAN I think Minimal asks a legitimate question. The dev for Journler has stated that he's considering selling this software. That scenario should be concerning to both newcomers and invested users like myself. I've (pre)paid for the 2.6 update only to find out that this update may never come. (Version 2.5.5)

QUICKBEN Thanks for the info. I've been test driving Journler and MacJournal and so far, Journler comes out on top. I think I'll hold off on purchasing either one until the clouds clear a little. (Version 2.5.5)

Journler | Jan 19 2009 |
JQMUSICMAN I should've mentioned in my previous comment that, for me, Journler is a fantastic piece of software (5 stars). It's super-stable, powerful, well-designed, etc. And it's because of this that I'm so disappointed with this news of a sell-out. I've been eagerly awaiting the 2.6 update for months only to find out the dev may be giving up. If this were mediocre software, I wouldn't care one way or the other. (Version 2.5.5)

LEV Phil Dow, developer of Journler, has said he will continue some sort of work with the app for 1- 2 years but then that's it for him. He's happy to hand it off to other developers, though. His full - and remarkably honest & straight-talking - post on the matter is here: http://www.journler.com/community/forums/viewtopic.php?t=3925 (Version 2.5.5)

Xee | Sep 28 2007 |
MINIMAL DESIGN The problem mentioned above has *nothing* to do with "spyware"... people should be a little more careful with what they say... This app is great and doesn't do anything even remotely related to privacy, it doesn't phone home, etc... And I personally haven't had any file association problem after using Xee for a year or so. Navicat for MySQL | Sep 3 2007 |
MINIMAL DESIGN This is indeed the Best MySQL manager out there, just it's automatic backup isa big time saver. $60 for this app is a steal... I would upgrade my v6 if it wasn't for their crap upgrade policy. From their KB: "A license lasts permanently. You are entitlted to free upgrade all the maintenance release of your purchased version within the first year. For instance: If you obtain Navicat 6, you will only entitle to free upgrade to Navicat 6.X.X within the first year of your purchase." You only get a year of upgrade, it's not related to the version # so you could potentially have to pay full price for a bug fix... I'll keep my aging version... (Version 7.0.6)

YemuZip | Aug 25 2007 |
MINIMAL DESIGN Nice update. I wish it didn't put single items in a folder (zip one file, then expand and you get a folder with the file inside instead of just the file). Other than that, a great utility when dealing with PC users. (Version 2.1)

BBEdit | Aug 6 2007 |
MINIMAL DESIGN I won't hide the fact that I'm a TM fanboy ;) And I won't deny the fact that BBEdit is great, it was my main editor until TM came along... BUt after reading your review, I just wanted to say that you might want to look into TM a little more, because a lot of the things that you say are missing are actually there, just harder to find than in BBEdit. But you might also not want to... and I respect that. TM is really powerful once you spend some time with it though... :) (Version 8.7)

Reggy | May 22 2007 |
MINIMAL DESIGN Really nice interface that makes it a breeze to test your regex before using them. I wish this app existed when I first learned regex! It would be perfect if you could somehow save them though, like a little itunes style column on the left with your "regex library" but it does its job perfectly as it is... Just nitpicking here... Actiontastic | Mar 20 2007 |
MINIMAL DESIGN I wrote a full review on my site so I won't go too much in the details but Actiontastic id as of now the most comprehensive GTD for OS X available. It's not at 1.0 yet, so it doesn't have all the features in yet (hence the 4 stars) but it good enough to replace kGTD. I'm not even sure I'll consider OmniFocus when it comes out. The major advantage this app has over the other GTD solutions out there (besides kGTD) is that the Dev really understands GTD, and it shows... Every single UI choice is right on, and I feel confident that whatever new feature makes it in future versions, they will thoroughly thought out and well implemented. And with the promised online application to go with it, the circle is complete. At last, a real Cocoa solution for GTD has arrived... (Version 0.9.3)

NovaMind | Nov 29 2006 |
MINIMAL DESIGN What it does is great. I wish it was made by the Omni group (or Apple) though. The interface is not clear at all, and they know it... That's why they have a tutorial popping up when you start up the app. Definitly not the kinda of program where you can just guess where everything is and what everything does... Some of the icons are just plain incomprehensible. I also wish the default look was a little more pleasing to the eyes... Definitely one of the best mind map apps out there, but definitely not one of the best OS X apps out there... (Version 3.2.6)

MINIMAL DESIGN jameskitty, your comment makes no sense... No one's forcing you to update every .xx update... That's why version #s are for. If you HAVE to come to MacUpdate every day and HAVE to download every single little patch, that's you're problem/choice. If you don't feel like it, then download only every full # update or only .x updates. What a pointless criticism. (Version 1.62)

Lineform | Oct 22 2006 |
MINIMAL DESIGN After playing with it for half hour, I have to say it's very impressive. Everything it does, it does it way better than Illustrator. The way it deals with rounded corner rectangles or gradient fill for instance is so much more modern and convenient than AI. Unfortunately, there's just too much it doesn't do, you can't even really compare the two since I'm assuming the target market is quite different... There's no way I could use Lineform in a pro environment, it just makes me dream about how great it would be if Illustrator worked the same way :) If you just need a solid vector app without CS2 integration etc..., this might be it though. ORION MK. V It's a nice "little" program that does things quite intuitively. Unfortunately some of its features produce PDFs that are invalid, so if basic shapes are all you need, or screen art it's fine, otherwise Illustrator/Freehand still remain better "print production" art tools. I'm eager to see how Lineform evolves however... it may become a great print illustration tool. (Version 1.2.3)

Midnight Inbox | Sep 22 2006 |
MINIMAL DESIGN Too early for a review I guess... If this app worked, it could be one of the most useful app to come out lately. But as of now, it just doesn't work. I'll keep an eye on it, hoping I can replace kGTD w/ a true cocoa app someday... little detail: I wish the wooden thing was optional, I personally don't think it adds anything to the GUI besides clutter and extra height... OLIPOWER I'll second your comment on the wooden stuff. No reason for that - it does not blend with the otherwise fine interface. PS: now at version 0.9.5 Midnight Inbox starts to look more usable, the database being sorted out, and many bugs ironed out. It is however still not finished, but it holds a lot of promise, and will deliver many features new to the scene of GTD on the Mac. Kudos to the developer for having the will-power to do so much work in so little time. He should have initially called it an alpha-version though. But, that's just words. When it works it works. I'm looking forward to using it. (Version 0.9.5)

Cocoalicious | Jun 18 2006 |
MINIMAL DESIGN Very useful delicious bookmark manager. I wish it showed the "notes" in the "description" column though, and had a "title" column to show what's in the current "description" one. I also wish it remembered the state of the app display between restarts. Like the width and ordering of columns. Ideally, a prefs set to show/hide available columns would be great. Still very usable as it is now though. Thanks!! (Version 1.0b42)

Menulicious | Jun 14 2006 |
MINIMAL DESIGN This little app is really cool. Those 2 new improvements make it really usable. The new icon is way better and the top level list of tags is a god send. The only thing I can think of that would make even more usable would be the option to assign a shortcut to get the menu to open, that way no clicking would be necessary... It would also be nice to be able to optionally remove the icons from the menus too, they don't really add anything and take up space. I like it!! (Version 1.1)

Yojimbo | Apr 16 2006 |
MINIMAL DESIGN It looks promising, I like the interface. It's very simple to use, which I find primordial for this type of app that's supposed to save time. However, I'm a little concerned about the import/export feature... There's 0 option as far as export goes if I'm not mistaken, and it doesn't seem to export "notes" attached to items. Why do I have to lose this piece of info on export? They're other little quirks here and there so, as others have said, I'll keep an eye on this, but it's not quite "there" yet... (Version 1.1)

BBEdit | Mar 7 2006 |
MINIMAL DESIGN that you like TM better than BB, I can understand that (I do to ;) but I don't think that should bring BBEdit ratings down to 2.5 stars... Doesn't make much sense. (Version 8.2.5)

OnyX | Jan 16 2006 |
MINIMAL DESIGN This is the weirdest bug I've ever since in 15 years using Macs! I open Onyx, and the main window is invisible. I get the menubar menus though, so when I go to view > customize toolbar, the customization window slides down, but out of nowhere... Also the first "onyx need you admin pass" window does the same... It's actually pretty funny to look at... but definitely a bug. Maybe 'cause I have Iridium installed? I doubt it but... (Version 1.6.7)

TextMate | Jan 6 2006 |
MINIMAL DESIGN I own BBEdit and never use it anymore... As a web designer, TextMate takes a little more work to tailor it to your needs at first, and that's why I first gave up on it... But give it a few days to customize it and you'll never go back to whatever you used before. That's the key of this editor, every little aspects of it can be tweaked to YOUR way of working. This flexibility does come with a steeper learning curve than other apps of this kind but, again, it's really worth it. So my advice is, try it out when you're not too busy, read the documentation, and play with it for about a week. It's an investment in time, but you'll be saving hours and hours after that on every projects you'll work on... And make sure you sign up for the mailing list, everyone on there is a genius coder and very helpful, well... besides me I guess ;) (Version 1.5)
