Baseline
Nov 10 2008

MILDM8NNERED  Hi Xplicit

A new version of Baseline that addresses the issues with deletion and useability is coming soon.

We've already got most of the requested changes in place, but are still polishing and debugging.

cheers,

Martin

MILDM8NNERED  That's a pretty lame review.

Apart from "I hate paying for software on principle", what other problems did you have with Baseline?

MILDM8NNERED  If kknopp considers Baseline to be "mundane" and "basic", perhaps he could point to another app that offers the same functionality for free, or even write one himself.

Hell, if its just a shell script underneath, perhaps he can post suitable code (for computing deltas across file system snapshots) in a comment here.

By the way, there is no charge for Baseline upgrades.

Oh, and one more thing, I make quite a reasonable living from shareware apps, Thanks.

MILDM8NNERED  The big difference between Baseline and the other disk scanning apps is that Baseline can tell you what's changed on your disk, not just how big each file or folder is.

This is exactly what you want when cleaning up a disk. "where has my free space gone?" is a much more relevant question than "how much space does each item take up".

Baseline can also show you *only* the items that have changed, which makes cleaning up your disk a whole lot easier.

http://www.mildmanneredindustries.com/blog/?p=92 lists some other Disk Sizing/Scanning apps (together with some speed and memory usage comparisons), some (but not all) of which are free.

The unregistered version of Baseline will provide similar functionality to all of these apps. However, once we ship 1.0, after the demo period has expired, Baseline's unique functionality will only be available to licensed users.

MILDM8NNERED  Hi Castle,

if you'd let me know what controls you'd like over specific functions, I'll see what we can do.

The two main constraints here are

a) what's possible

b) what can be elegantly fiitted into the UI.

b) is actually much more constraining than b), but we can always add hidden prefs, if required for specific needs.

SyncTogether
Feb 17 2007

MILDM8NNERED  Hi Dorian,

I am the original developer of MySync (which became SyncTogether). Although I have continued to work with Mark/Space on SyncTogether, I'm writing here in a personal capacity.

As far as a demo is concerned, that's really a Mark/Space question, so I won't comment on that right now.

As far as the user reviews go, if you look back over the reviews here on MacUpdate, almost all of these relate to the original MySync, and most are very favourable. VersionTracker has a few more negative comments, but these all relate to MySync, and are largely from people who felt (with some justification - sorry about that), that they didn't receive adequate support during the transition.

On both sites, the app has a four star, or greater rating.

The SyncTogether forum at Mark/Space is slightly different. This is for discussion of problems with the app, and gives users a direct point of contact with the engineering teams and vice versa. It's not surprising that there are more problem reports than praise there.

In fact, I've been more surprised at the lack of issues, and the low numbers of support requests that have been received.

Some users will always run into problems with syncing - there are a lot of moving parts, including Sync Services and the client applications. For examples that don't involve SyncTogether, see Apple's .mac sync forum at http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=957

However, the overwhelming majority of SyncTogether user's experiences seem to have been relatively problem free as far as I can tell.

Hope this helps.

cheers,

Martin

MARTIN REDINGTON  Hi anonymous :-)

remote syncing (i.e. over the public internet) is coming very soon (probably within the month). All the pieces except one (which is very simple) are in place.

I'm just trying to work out all the other (to be honest, very minor) wrinkles, and not to make too many changes too fast.

If you would like to join the beta-testers group, for early access to remote syncing, mail me at mildm8nnered@gmail.com

cheers,

Martin
