MIKELAMBRELLIS  I see that the new version supports AirSharing but I'm not sure how to copy files so that AirSharing can see them? Does somebody know how to do this? Thanks.

MIKELAMBRELLIS  Another good pickup. Yes, I forgot the "sudo " at the front of the "ln -s" command. That will make the link owned by root and unremovable by the user.

If you've already created the link, then:

sudo chown -h root:admin Plugins

ought to do the trick.

MIKELAMBRELLIS  Good point about the security issue. I resolved it by moving my user plugins to the system domain folder (and setting their ownership appropriately), then removing my local domain and creating a soft link to the system domain. That way, if any user-privileged script/app tries to write to the local domain it will fail as it really points to the system domain, requiring system install privs. I've tried it and Safari seems to work fine (using Safari Block, and SafariStand). I haven't tried running a plugin installer yet.

Here are the commands I used. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK! If you aren't comfortable with unix commands and using Terminal then DO NOT DO THIS!

From Terminal:

sudo mkdir -p /Library/Application\ Support/SIMBL/Plugins

sudo mv ~/Library/Application\ Support/SIMBL/Plugins/* \

/Library/Application\ Support/SIMBL/Plugins/

sudo chown -R root:admin /Library/Application\ Support/SIMBL/Plugins/*

rm -rf ~/Library/Application\ Support/SIMBL/Plugins

ln -s /Library/Application\ Support/SIMBL/Plugins \

~/Library/Application\ Support/SIMBL/Plugins

MIKELAMBRELLIS  I couldn't start any of my MS apps. Something about the serial number. I've got the Home-Student edition. I may have recycled the same number across mine and the kids Macs.

It'd be nice if you left some feedback on what your trouble is though.

KAWAII  Remember that you can only install it on up to 3 Macs and you'll need to use three seperate serial numbers.

What I suggest is you uninstall it, delete all the Microsoft Office settings, and do a clean install of Office 2008, apply SP1 then apply SP2 (since SP2's only requirement is SP1 to be installed) and see how that goes. I've had no problems here so it must be a setup related issue at your end rather than something wrong with the software.

DR. GIRLFRIEND  You don't need to uninstall the entire app to fix that; just uninstall the product key as follows:

1. In the Finder, select /Applications/Microsoft Office 2008/Office/OfficePID.plist, and then on the File menu, click Move to Trash.

2. Select /Users/username/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office 2008/Microsoft Office 2008 settings.plist, and then on the File menu, click Move to Trash.

3. On the Apple menu, click Restart.

4. After your computer restarts, open any Office 2008 application. The Office Setup Assistant opens.

5. Accept the software license agreement, and then enter your valid product key.

The product key is located on the back of the Office 2008 for Mac DVD sleeve or on the back of the Install Guide.

Next time, don't hesitate to ask for help; that's what we're all here for :)

It beats a re-install, right?

BACKPACKER  MS's online Help info isn't that great:

The uninstall section just tells you to trash the MS2008 folder in Applications and the MS folder in ~/Library/Preferences. That still leaves a 142MB MS folder in /Library/App Support and many MS files in /Library/Receipt, and another MS folder in ~/Library/App Support. Did I forget any?

As for avoiding re-installing by trashing ~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office 2008/Microsoft Office 2008 Settings.plist &

/Applications/Microsoft Office 2008/Office/OfficePID.plist ?

The Setup Assistant doesn't always allow you to re-enter a valid key, but asks that you re-install from scratch.

However, the latest OpenOffice 3.1.1_310 build 9413, released on 22nd July'09, looks good .... just a tidy drag-n-drop as usual.

CoRD

MIKELAMBRELLIS  Having tried Microsoft's own appalling rdp client as well as the MacPorts rdesktop client, I can only say that CoRD is excellent.

It has a VERY Mac-like interface and I like the scaling of the windowed display to fit my laptop's screen.

Congratulations to the developer.

My only request would be to add the ability to run specific applications/shells.

MIKELAMBRELLIS  Agreed. The visual perspective makes it far easier to see the relative proportions of files and directories versus the total disk size. Scanning is very fast and the latest version provides zooming and other features.

For a command line report similar to the GUI output of WhatSize, you can type in the following in terminal:

f=/tmp/~sort.tmp;du -hs *>$f;for s in P T G M K B; do cat $f|grep "^..."$s|sort -nr;done

(all of that should be on one line)

MIKELAMBRELLIS  Doh! :-)

Sorry for that. I honestly hadn't noticed about the save as default view. I also didn't know about the "option" select. Is that true for all apps? Cool.

Anyway, that eliminates the only objection I had. The app is now officially perfect. Well done!

MIKELAMBRELLIS  I just figured out how to do what I wanted in point 1 above. Open ~/Library/Preferences/net.sourceforge.skim-app.skim.plist in Property List Editor. Expand the Root node. Expand the SKDefaultPDFDisplaySettings node. Set autoScales to Yes (this achieves the automatic fitting to display). Set displayMode to 0 (this turns off Continuous display). Set displayPageBreaks to No.

Given that I have another year to go of study, this has just saved me several hundred mouseclicks.

It would still be nice if the app would remember its settings without having to edit the property list :-)

MIKELAMBRELLIS  This is an absolutely AWESOME program. It has literally gotten me through my Masters degree. The ability to annotate PDFs is just excellent.

You can add "sticky notes", use a highlighter, circle, box, underline - it is just fantastic.

I am giving it 5 stars overall, however I would like to respectfully request the following two features:

1. Is there some way to save the setting changes that I make? I like to turn off PDF Display|Continuous, and PDF Display|Page Break. I also like to set Zoom to Fit. However I find that I have to do this for every single PDF I read. Is there someway to make the settings changes "sticky"? The lack of this is holding me back from giving it 5 stars for "Ease of Use".

2. This is really a wish. I understand that this would be quite difficult. What I would like is a way to select a "block" of text so that I could select parts of a single column from a PDF page that is displaying multi-column text. Currently, Skim (and every other PDF viewer I've tried) selects whole lines when in text mode, and this is useless when the PDF has multi-column text.

However, these are very minor quibbles. I salute the developer. Thank you very much for a great product.

HOFMAN  For 1, simply choose "Use Current view Settings as Default" from the PDF menu. For 2, you can block-select by holding the Option key (this is standard selection behavior in Cocoa apps). Also read the FAQ on the Skim wiki for more tips with regards to this.
