MICKSMAC  Be sure to trial before upgrading.

I upgraded to Yep 2.01 and now it won't find *anything*. Tried all the authors' suggested fixes (delete all prefs, re-index Spotlight) with no result.

Yep 1.x works fine so I'll have to drop back to that.

VMware Fusion
Oct 28 2009

MICKSMAC  I've been unable to get an XP VM migrated from Parallels 4 to work.

The migration itself completes with no errors. When booting the XP VM, Fusion 3.0 gets to the point where XP switches from 640x480 to full-res login graphics. At that stage the VM screen goes black, although the VM appears to be running. Fusion logfile appears to show nothing of relevance.

Uninstalling the Parallels Tools, and/or Parallels itself, makes no difference.

One side irritation - Fusion insists on splitting the new VM into 2GB chunks! You can choose to rebuild later, but that takes another 40 minutes.

Wondering if anyone has successfully migrated from Parallels 4.

MICKSMAC  As the developer says, "one-stop geo-coding".

It does what it says, and does it well. Supports the 3 main image cataloguing/editing programs (iPhoto, Aperture and Lightroom).

This program has been an excellent addition to my photography workflow. Recommended.

MICKSMAC  I paid for this, only to discover it has a huge drawback: unlike Nambu, it doesn't substitute shortened URLs, it simply truncates your whole tweet (adding a short new URL), effectively losing all text after the URL.

I have no idea why people rave about this client.

It is unusable for me. Do yourself a favor, go get Nambu for free.

MICKSMAC  Does anyone know if this developer has folded or not?? I paid for a license 3 days ago and received an auto-mail saying my license would be sent "soon".

In 3 days I HAVE NOT RECEIVED MY LICENSE or any acknowledgement to the 3 support emails I have sent.

Has anyone out there had any recent dealings with this developer? Please comment.

If the developer is reading: please send my license to me!

MICKSMAC  My evaluation of this app was very, very negative.

The developer states that it supports RAW - it *DOESN'T*. There is some talk of a separate RAW plugin, but no way to download it for evaluation.

Drag and drop from Aperture 2.1 DOESN'T work (the application states that it does, but the manual make no mention of Aperture, only iPhoto).

The developer expects a "value-added" donation in order to get the ability to read PSD files - this should be a standard feature and factored into the price.

In summary: if you use iPhoto or keep all your images in folders then this may work well for you. If you have a pro workflow involving RAW then it won't (as evaluated).

MICKSMAC  Here's the problem:

Bonjour sees the AirportExtreme as "Snowflake" (and so does BJMounter).

TCP/IP sees the Airport as "Snowflake.local" (not Snowflake). This is some strangeness of Leopard that I can't work out. My only thought is to add an alias into /etc/hosts.

And I have no idea why Leopard suddenly started doing this :-(

I had been trying to manually mount the AFP disk, with:

and it timed out with error 1069 (no server). Yet the finder mounts OK!!! So I tried...

Any ideas??

MICKSMAC  2.0.5 worked perfectly mounting my AFP disk until a few days ago - now it hangs forever saying "mounting". If I kill it and try to restart, it gives an error of "-600" for a minute or so.

Note that everything else (Finder, ChronoSync) continues to mount my AFP disk OK.

Any helpful suggestions would be welcome. I loved the ability of BM to auto-mount my AFP disk.

SANDRO NOEL  that my friend is because you are mounting drives to the same server with different users.

one of them has lower access rights than the other one.

The way AFP works is that once you authenticate with the server it shows you only what you are allowed to see.

so let's say you log in with a guest account on the server first.

you will see only the public shares.

and the your full power user will not even see his shares. thus the directory not found message... what you have to do is use only one user per server.

if that is not your case, then it is something i have not encountered yet.

You DON'T (at least, there's no obvious way of getting it without paying the extra $20), and Roxio doesn't respond to my support questions regarding this matter.

As for the standard version: it acts and performs exactly like v9 - only the icon and some colors are different.

Dec 14 2008

MICKSMAC  I tried it and, while the flagging works well, it has the intolerable (for me) side-effect of bringing Mail into the foreground whenever new mail arrives.

To remove it (there are no obvious instructions), delete the following (then reboot):

~/Library/Application Support/SIMBL/plugins/FlagIt.bundle

~/Library/Mail/FlagIt-Settings.plist

~/Library/Application Support/FlagIt!/ (folder + contents)

If you weren't already using SIMBL for other appl input management, you can also delete the following (leave if in doubt):

/Library/InputManagers/SIMBL/ (folder + contents)

/Library/Application Support/SIMBL/ (folder + contents)

/Library/Receipts/SIMBL.pkg

Reboot and empty the trash.

MICKSMAC  A warning on Koingo's "Utility Pack" (of which Alarm Clock Pro is a component), since Koingo do not warn you of the following on their web site:

Koingo states that if you buy their $100 bundle you get lifetime upgrades. What they don't tell you is that if they add to/change the bundle contents then your "lifetime" status doesn't apply.

To the developer: you really should change/clarify the wording around this bundling. IMO it is deceptive and you should do better by your customers.

MICKSMAC  I just tried a demo license with the latest version. This is a fairly highly rated, and very expensive, piece of software. Imagine my surprise then when the software wouldn't even run on my MacBook pro 15" (latest Leopard patches).

At first startup, it asked for an output device, but would not let me either choose one or close the dialog box. Upon application close/restart, followed by "file->new" it crashed.

SUGGESTION: don't purchase without trying the demo first. Good luck.

To the developer: I have sent the above in a crash report.

MICKSMAC  To the developers: You appear to have broken the "Check for update" feature in 1.0.8. It never accesses the network at all, instead returning either an eror, hanging forever in a progress window, or simply not doing anything at all.

Deleting prefs has no effect on this. Since you don't make the full version available by direct download to registered users, we now have no way to download any more versions!!

Please consider providing a download of the full version, not just the trial (and please v1.0.8).

SilverFast Ai Epson Scan
Sep 17 2008

MICKSMAC  This is horrible beyond description, but I will try. Bear in mind that I only tried the demo version (although supposedly, all features are enabled). I tried it with an Epson 2400 Perfection Photo scanner.

First - it crashes constantly under Leopard (10.5.5 anyway). It is a carbon application, and is launched from a "launcher" application, so your dock ends up filled with 3 or so icons. Some windows spontaneously lose their contents intermittently - buttons and checkboxes disappear.

Second - there seems to be no way, when scanning slides and negatives, to auto-select the multiple frames of the film strip or slide holder. This means you have to manually mask each photo individually and scan it! And then, the zoom-in button doesn't work,. so you have to mask based on a tiny, frame-sized image.

Third - it doesn't default to sensible scan resolutions. Who the hell would want to scan negatives at 150 dpi?? You have to select "other" then use a slider to get maximum scanner resolution. And even then thete is no guidance as to whether you are getting true optical versus interpolated resolution.

Fourth - some of the buttons just don't work (eg. histograms). Maybe these are disabled in demo mode, but this is not documented.

Fifth - no uninstall. I had to use "Pacifist" to pull apart the .PKG files to find where it put all its files, in order to manually remove it from my system.

I'd value the developer's response to the above, so I'm not going to rate it, to be fair. I suggest that anyone evaluate with your own scanner very very carefully. Persoanlly I cannot believe they can ask so much money for this producy when it simply doesn't work at all with my Epson scanner.

SilverFast Ai Epson Scan
Mar 27 2009

THE FOX  Hi

I use a V750 and did not have any instability probs so far.

Previously one of my 1TB Datatanks (FireWire) caused a problem with my FireWire bus which caused my Scanner to fail sometimes.

But that vanished after switching to USB.

The Datatank draw far too much power from the bus.

So now SilverFast is stable.

That did not change with the r5 update.

I never had any problems with vanishing icons neither.

I scan negs with a prepared maskset I saved as a preset in my Ai Studio.

And the soft zooms into any active frame when I click the zoom button.

My framesets also include the necessary resolution. I set that individually for any individual scan anyway. For prints I do not need more than 300dpi anyway, so I only raise the res for scans into my archive.

With my soft (I also checked demo mode ;-) ) the buttons all do work.

Maybe the previous poster set his scantype to an HDR scan, which is some kind of raw format and is supposed to do that.

There is an uninstall script in my SilverFast folder but I have not tried that so far.

Would be nice if Apple would some day invent some kind of software manager. Would make life much more easier.

BTW, as a previous reviewer notes, the ".dvd file" that is created is simply a wrapper around the TS_VIDEO folder of the disk; right-click, show package contents and drag it somewhere else. You can then use Popcorn, or similar, to compress to DVD-5 if required.
