META Does everything I ever needed from StuffIt Deluxe, in a third of bloat of StuffIt Expander alone. Makes 7z files, and unpacks pretty much any legacy proprietary format. Also has the right UI: let me open a window and move files in and out, and only ask me what format and do the compression when I actually save. (Version 1.8)

ANONYMOUS eeer, i don't think Disk Utility does 448-bit encryption dude... (Version 1.5)

CipherDisk | Feb 11 2004 |
THEONETHATWASNOTHERE 128-Bit or 448-Bit, it does not matter. If the implementation is weak (i.e. no crypto experts designed the software), then it is just a question of time, until someone finds a way around it. You can still recover the unencrypted data from hard disks and other media, if you convert an existing disk to the CipherDisk format. Ask your local data recovery experts! (Version 1.5)

CipherDisk | Feb 11 2004 |
SUBROSASOFT.COM Diskcopy does disk images only... It also only does AES 128 bit (CipherDisk does AES256). CipherDisk does CDs, DVDs, firewire drives, etc... With none of the disk image size limitations. If you want password protected DVDs, CDs, or external hard drives - Cipherdisk is for you. (Version 1.5)

CipherDisk | Feb 11 2004 |
SUBROSASOFT.COM The encryption WAS designed by cryptography experts... in fact it was designed by perhaps the world's best cryptographers. Blowfish and AES are currently recognised as 2 of the strongest algorithms in the world, written by 2 of the world's foremost experts. Feel free (in fact we encourage you - just for a laugh) to take a CipherDisk encrypted disk to your local data recovery agent. If they recover it make sure they tell the press.... because they would immediately be recognised as the best cryptographic expert on the planet. (Version 1.5)

CipherDisk | Mar 11 2004 |
THEONETHATWASNOTHERE And these crypto-experts designed “CipherDisk”, right? Everyone can use “strong-cryptography” today, but this says absolute nothing about the security of the end-product. And with CypherDisk, i can use this “strong-cryptography” to encrypt my disks. Great. But there is a “little” problem If i convert my existing disks to the encrypted “CipherDisk” format: http://www.cs.auckland.ac.nz/~pgut001/pubs/secure_del.html I recommend you, that you look at the source code of PGP. It will help you to understand, how to design secure software. PGP 8.0.3 Source Code for Macintosh http://www.pgp.com/products/sourcecode.html By the way, did you read the cryptanalysis papers from Schneier, Kocher & others? Probably not... (Version 2.0)

MATHEW I can answer that one. Your USB converter runs at 48kHz, but RAW writes the AIFF file header for a 44.1kHz file whatever the real sample rate is. It's a bug in RAW. Myself, I wrote a quick program to fix it... (Version 1.1B14)

Liquid Ledger | Oct 14 2003 |
MATHEW The big thing Liquid Ledger does that Quicken can't handle at all is multiple currencies. If you need that feature, the choice (as far as I know) comes down to Liquid Ledger or Moneydance. I picked Liquid Ledger, as the interface is just so much nicer. It obeys the Cocoa human interface guidelines, and a great deal of care has obviously been put in to make sure things are done in a direct way. Want to rename an account? Just double-click and type the new name, and it updates everywhere instantly. Want to undo something? Infinite undo, with descriptions of what it's going to undo each time. Want to focus on a particular expense? Slide out the accounts and click that expense account, just like choosing a folder in Apple Mail. I did experience one crash attempting to import data--but I was attempting to import HTML as if it was OFX. Oops. Since I got all my data in, it's been fine. If your requirements are fairly standard--banking, savings, a few shares and some real-estate--Liquid Ledger is well worth a look. I managed to find a downloadable demo, which they seem not to publicize. (Version 1.2)

QPict | Jun 26 2003 |
MATHEW I've tried most of the "thumbnail browser" programs, including iView MediaPro and the browse features of Graphic Converter and Photoshop Elements, and I still keep using QPict. The batch processing is excellent for adding metadata to scanned photos, and it's robust enough to deal with tens of thousands of images. Best of all, it's drag-drop simple to use, and doesn't demand the right to rearrange my folders of photos the way iPhoto does. The newer versions add the "dynamic zoom" of iPhoto, too. You'll need something else for cropping and adjusting your photos, but QPict is a great way to organize and browse them. (Version 5.2.6)

KARSTEN@BRIKSOFTWARE.COM i think the usage of this interpreter is not its speed, cause then one could compile it with gcc right away... but if one needs to implement some scripting stuff in your own application, this interpreter can do all the dirty work of parsing and executing... things that are VERY hard to do for a language like c. and if you're creative enough, then you may imagine some cases where a language like c is perfect for scripting an application. META Regarding the "CPU hog" comment, it's not the CPU that's heating up, it's your graphics chip. Nothing I can do about that--3D graphics chips run hot. That's why the ones in tower G4s have their own fans. 1.2 has many more trails, which will hopefully please people. Be aware that picking the most strips won't necessarily result in the screen filling up. A better way to do that is to have fewer strips, but make them drift slower. (Or even set the velocity to zero in 1.2.) As for the complaint about the text being pixilated... dude, have you even seen the movie? (Version 1.2)

Interarchy | May 13 2003 |
MATHEW I bought Interarchy, but I'm not paying $25 for an upgrade to get bug fixes and features I don't want when I could buy Transmit for that price. In addition, the new "no demo" decision means I would never have bought it in the first place. There's a lot of stuff in Interarchy that's just too awkward to use. For instance, given a list of URLs, it ought to be easy to download those files in turn, one by one. Sure, Interarchy can do it, but you try working out how. Having said all that, it's still the most reliable and speedy download client. (Version 6.2)
