MERRIMAC This is really good software, but I stopped using it because I discovered that annotations are stored as separate files, rather than modifications of the PDF itself, which makes it difficult to share annotations with, for instance, PC users. If I do my annotations in Preview, on the other hand, the annotations become part of the PDF file itself and are transferable. (In fact, Preview annotations can even be further edited on PCs with software such as PDF X-Change.) I'm sharing this point just so that people can make informed software choices on the basis of their needs. If I am wrong about this point, or if there is a simple workaround, please correct me. HOFMAN Skim allows you to save a copy of the PDF with the notes embedded inside the PDF, compatible with other programs, using the Export action. (Version 1.3.1)

STEVEN GOODHEART HOFMAN, thanks for the great tip about how to export with comments embedded! Skim is awesome, and it's great to know one can do this when sharing with others. (Version 1.3.2)

MERRIMAC I wholeheartedly agree. But in keeping with Macupdate protocol, if you are going to post a starred review, please consider providing some further detail about what you like about the software. Thanks. (Version 1.51)

DEVONthink Pro Office | Apr 29 2009 |
MERRIMAC The new ABBYY OCR engine is excellent and a big improvement over the previous Readiris engine. From what I gather, ABBYY is generally considered to be the top OCR engine, but up till now it wasn't available for Mac. Now, with DEVONthink Pro's new integration of ABBYY, DEVONthink seems to have become the best OCR option available for Mac (other than Acrobat Pro, which I have not tested). Given that ABBYY's OCR software for Windows and Acrobat Pro both costs hundreds of dollars, DEVONthink Pro is a bargain. (Version 2.0b4)

Does anyone know if the ABBYY OCR engine incorporated with DevonThink will cope with digital photos of books [straightening lines, etc] like the stand-alone version does? I can upgrade from DT personal 1.9 [which I have not in fact used] to 2 for $50, a lot less than buying ABBYY itself [equivalent of $140 in the UK]. Sadly no sign of ABBYY Photoreader for the Mac. MERRIMAC This app is pure dynamite. I would write a full review, but now that I've gotten so organized thanks to The Hit List, I'm going to defer writing a review in favor of doing the work I really need to do. Thanks, Potion Factory! 5 STARS. (Version 0.9.3.7b)

MERRIMAC I'm a total non-professional, and I was just looking for some software to do some image editing. I found this app to be a pleasure to use, powerful, and well-designed. I also was able to do what I needed to do for free, as the free trial of this software doesn't appear to have any limitations. (It puts a "Please Purchase" banner across your image while you work, but I can live with that.) The editing work I needed to do required taking an existing image and separating it into many different layers, and then creating duplicates of many of the layers so that I could experiment with changing the colors. Acorn handled all of this powerfully, flawlessly, and intuitively. I also appreciated the ability to easily export various layer combinations into jpeg's via the "web export" function. While I have not tested many other image editing apps, I have used lots of mac software, so I am relatively confident that this app deserves five stars, at least insofar as it meets the needs of users like myself. MERRIMAC Hmmm... I spent over an hour trying to get this to run (on Leopard / PPC). At first it wouldn't open at all. Then I looked under the hood and found some documentation files with a few hints on what to do if the app won't run. So I finally got it to start, but it immediately crashes upon start. I've downloaded a lot of apps from Macupdate, but this is the first one that I couldn't get to run at all. But it sounds like it would have some useful features if it worked. (Version 3.7.1.6)

MERRIMAC I'm running Leopard and this script works great. It was an essential ingredient that enabled me to obtain a full text document of a book that was only available in page-by-page reading mode online. I used a download manager to download the full range of URLS (for all 344 pages of the book), but then I needed an easy way to combine all the resulting HTML files into one. (I'm not a programmer/developer.) This script worked like a charm. You can put the icon in the doc, and then just drag files into it. I did all 344 at once --- no problem! (I tried using various other apps to combine the files, but they all hung.) Now, I realize I could have used Terminal and the "cat" command, but this script makes the process way more efficient and convenient. Many thanks! (Version 1.1)
