Apimac Timer
Jul 2 2009
*****

MDOGNRDOG  I had a need for a stopwatch that could start with the spacebar, start fast, and stop on a dime. None of the other five stopwatches could do all three, except this one. It can also run full-screen.

Other people may have other specific needs, but if you're timing something that requires getting the starts and stops fast, this is the only candidate.

Intervals

MDOGNRDOG  This is a very nice thing to have around. I am using it right now to practice rapid counting of cards, and it serves in the role of timekeeper pretty well.

I have one quibble with the UI. Currently, to start/stop requires the user to press opt-s. This cannot be changed as a preference. When you are using a stopwatch to time tasks down to the hundredths of seconds, it would be far preferable to have the ability to set the spacebar as the start/stop control. ANY non-chorded keystroke, however, would be preferable to a two-key chord. If this program offered a preference that allowed mapping of the start/stop and reset keys, it would be significantly improved.

Glims

****.

MDOGNRDOG  It's definitely an improvement over Saft. The fit-n-finish is better, and the feature set incorporates some of Inquisitor's cool features.

I was stoked to see it allows you to set "grouped" tabs to appear directly to the right of the selected tab. But it doesn't behave the way Tabs Open Relative (the Firefox extension) does it, so Glims still isn't the ultimate browser. But in conjunction with Safari 4, Glims is still very cool.

MondoMouse

MDOGNRDOG  One feature I really miss when not using the GNOME desktop is the nifty little feature where ALT+click anywhere on a window is the same as clicking on the title bar of that window -- you can drag the window by grabbing anywhere.

Particularly on a laptop, this is a nice addition.

Mondomouse gives you this feature, but at a cost. Its key bindings do not always interact with the standard key bindings in the ideal fashion, for one thing.

The other, which is why I probably won't buy it, is that it's kind of a hog. Watching my GeekTool top output shows some pretty serious memory usage, and I saw an immediately noticeable bite out of my battery life on my 17" MacBook Pro when I had it running. So the ability to sling windows around my desktop more easily with the touchpad comes with the fact that I can do so for approximately 8% less time before having to plug back in.

Growl
Jun 6 2008

MDOGNRDOG  Every Mac should have Growl. Like Quicksilver, it's one of those apps that's free, fundamentally Mac-like, and yet somehow transformative of the user experience.

Download it without a second thought.

Transmission

*****

MDOGNRDOG  I have had no trouble whatsoever with Transmission (this is my first version number of the software), and although it is obviously less feature-packed than Azureus, that matters little to me since I had no occasion to use 90% of Azureus's features.

Transmission does everything I want. I think the way that one schedules bandwidth restrictions, and the way that restrictions will override default settings, could be more intuitive. I've got it set up satisfactorily now, but it took some tinkering that I generally don't think appropriate for a Mac app, where "set it and forget it" should be the Golden Rule.

MDOGNRDOG  Wow. This is the best use of the dock's "eye candy" features EVER.

One glance at the dock icon tells me current conditions, plus tomorrow's forecast (although it could tell me other things if I so desired). And a single click pops open the full rundown. Very, very nice.

Circus Ponies NoteBook

MDOGNRDOG  These sorts of information manager applications are very personal choices, I think. For me, the programs that enforce a page or outline model are not what I want. I prefer products like Yojimbo and DevonThink that operate on a file model.

That being said, Circus Ponies has made a very, very good product for those who like the page model.

There's one feature that's so good, I almost decided to go with Notebook anyway: the "clipping services" allow you to set up a page in any given notebook where you can dump any idea you find from any Services-aware application (get on the ball, Firefox!), and then circle around later to that page and put the stuff where it belongs. It's a great, great feature that every other information manager should steal.

Hazel
May 5 2008
*****

MDOGNRDOG  If you have the chance, install Hazel very early in the process of setting up a new computer. If you put twenty minutes into thinking about where (and when) you want certain types of items to go in your workflow, and another fifteen minutes setting up Hazel to manage that workflow, you can really resist the natural tendencies of the Finder to have you build up undifferentiated piles of crap.

I've got it sorting and prioritizing different document types upon download, color-coding items that are starting to get stale (that need my intervention), dispatching .torrent files to the appropriate directory where they will be processed by the BT client automatically, etc.

A very useful program.
