Just Translate
Sep 28 2009
*****

MDAY108  I have been using Just Translate for a few months now

and it has literally changed a major part of my life.

I am a minister doing service in South America and...

I do not speak Spanish.

While I have managed to get by as a result of finding people here

who speak some English... my capacity to really communicate

took a major leap when I found Just Translate.

I had used many translators on the web but

I found that the end result of these translators to be terrible.

However, since I started using Just Translate...

I have received consistent feedback from people here in Venezuela

that my emails now are 90 to 95 per cent accurate in terms of

translation from English to Spanish.

I am also delighted with my experience of Jalada as a company.

Whenever I have needed a question answered,

I have received a reply within 72 hours.

It saddens me as to how many people condemn software

developers for not answering their email immediately.

It's easy to forget that unless you are hugely successful in this area,

you often have to hold at least one other job just to get by

especially since the global financial crisis hit.

After a few months of use...I really have no complaints .

Now...

if somebody could only develop software

that would instantly translate audio and video...

that would really be incredible!

MRGLSMRC  this software isan elaborate front end for web-based google translation services.

i might try this sometime but i dont understand why ishould give jalada the cash for googles work when i can just use the url for free.

to the minister in latin america-- why did you goto a country where you don't understand and can't be understood without an assistant? what makes you think you are being understood now in a persuasive way with this e-service?

please understand that i admire your determination to spread the word of god but translation is more than just swapping words-- it is cultural and gestural and so many nuanced things where technology is merely a crutch. spanish is not a hard language to learn when you are immersed in it.

i do use translation software myself for business purposes when i am getting a poor response from emails in english from a foreign developer. i use it when i want to show some europeanthat i am willing to go the extra mile to be understood byhim so translation services have their purposes.and jalada is as good a company for software as any. i know because i play with their fractal generator. but i do translation via two apps that are more appropriate and cheaper. i use kavaservices which operates on text in various ways besides translation. also i use the devonagent browser with instant google translation of webpages built in.

i am guessing that jalada's excellent product covers a larger gamutof languages than i need to use but on thos occassions where i want to see an arabic webpage i can just visit or some such without a forty dolar front end.

if the folks at jalada want to give me a reviewer's copy i will be glad togive their product a serious workout but presently i am disinclined to find it more useful than googles own web interface for the google service that jalada uses.

Speed Download
May 23 2009
*****

MDAY108  Years ago, I'd look at apps like Speed Downloader and think...

"Why on earth would I ever want to spend my hard earned bucks on that?

What's so limiting anyway about the Downloader in Safari or the fox or Camino?"

Now, 5 years later...

just the idea of being without this gem from YazSoft

would be for me like going for a walk around the block

with only one leg.

I simply can't imagine my Mac without it.

It's flawlessly stable...

ridiculously easy to learn...

I can set up downloads for after I go to bed...

and it really does download faster.

I'm starting to explore using it as my primary ftp app now too.

Also, being able to set up items in queue and forget about them is great.

Plus...

Johnny gives impeccable technical support.

The help you get from him feels like being assisted by a real human being...

not just some busy geek who's cranking out responses on his 15th cup of coffee.

But don't just take my word for it...

Put that ancient Safari downloader to use one more time

and download Speed Download right now.

And don't just let it sit there.

Work this little puppy...really work it!

Because if you do...

and you're not a SD convert within a few days...

then I'm sure that after your trial is up

and you return to that good old Safari Downloader...

within a few days...

or maybe even just a few hours...

(for me it was minutes...)

you'll be kicking yourself.

Why?

Because it'll be obvious that

you should've "joined the SD club" years ago.

Thanks for a great FIVE YEARS Johnny!

Flagit!
Jan 24 2009
*****

MDAY108  I process a LOT of email every day seven days a week.

In light of this, I find flagit to be invaluable.

I especially like the fact that I can choose to have the subject heading

made into the same color as my flag

which enables me to scan my flagged emails even faster.

On top of this, this is another great app from TastApps and besides quality...

you simply can't beat the customer service Tim and Tom give.

Give it a try and...

I don't know what the big hooplah is about if you try it

and discover that flagit's not for you.

It's very easy to uninstall but...

I doubt you'll want to.

Use it and put it to the test for a couple of days,

and I am sure you'll be as grateful for it as I am.

Web Snapper

*****

MDAY108  Hold the mayo!

Change my review from a few days ago to a solid FIVE STARS across the board.

I didn't notice that web snapper had the feature I wanted.

Access Web Snapper by keystroke: command shift E.

Yeah!

Web Snapper
Jan 18 2009
*****

MDAY108  I bought the latest version of Websnapper and find that it works perfectly - ZERO problems.

I have latest version of Safari and am on 10.5.6.

Besides the fact that Websnapper works consistently well for me, I really like being able to save my web page in different formats. Plus just having this ability "at the click of a button" really works for me. When I needed to contact the creator, I found him completely responsive and helpful - even more than that actually...a real person who didn't just fire back a geeky one line reply. Frankly...I recommend WS wholeheartedly.

P.S. The ONLY reason I gave it a 4 on features was because ultimately I wish that I could access WS's function using a keystroke instead of having to go to my trackball.

MDAY108  I have tried every video downloader available for mac and this is the ONLY one I have found that works consistently well. I also find the fact that it comes with a plugin for my browser to be a real plus. On top of the software working really well, the creator of Videobox is highly responsive and completely dedicated to giving only the best customer service. I recommend this fine piece of work wholeheartedly.

Safari New Tab Button
Nov 21 2008

MDAY108  OK...

"...freely available to anyone with a free developer account through Apple."

Forgive me but I think there are far more end users than developers

and I just don't feel right pretending that I am a developer

in order to get my hands right now on the next version of Safari!

And...

"...SafariTabs gives you the same feature and more for free. "

I am not so sure you are correct here...

Taken from safari tabs page:

"...gives you the option of choosing what page newly created tabs should load."

Frankly I don't need or want more options...

I just want one thing:

I simply want to click a button...

and produce my home page in a new tab

thank you very much end of story!

I really think one of the key draws to Safari besides speed is its "zen elegance".

Safari New Tab practices zen elegance perfectly

by trying to help you see that less...is more.

The developer could have padded his patch with a few more things

but I agree with him, Safari really NEEDS not much of anything now.

I agree that this patch has been missing from Safari for forever and I think it's more than reasonable to pay LESS than ONE DOLLAR to have this function since we can never know how long it's going to be before Safari 4 finally gets here.

Frankly, I find it sad and dismal how many people on Macupdate give negative reviews for a good piece of work simply because that work is not offered for free. I am all for confronting developers who overprice their work but I really hope that more folks begin to consider the fact that a patch, or an app, or a system pref, or a screen saver...these things take TIME to make these things plus it takes commitment and perseverance to stay responsive to those try/use their creation.

If more of us bought one less Café latte and coughed up a few more bucks for shareware every month, we would only see a steady increase of creativity, quality AND response when needed from the developer.

MDAY108  Years ago, I had trouble seeing what all the hoopla was about download applications.

However, Speed Download opened my eyes to the incredible value of such an application and I have been delighted to pay the last two upgrade fees. Fast and impeccable tech support and flawless performance make this an easy "straight five" review for me.

OLD JEWEL SOFTWARE  Hi MDay,

You have every right to be annoyed at version 2.2.2. The only defense I have is that I don't have a G5 or MacPro to test against, so I depended on users to contact me and collaborate to figure out what was going on.

I'm glad to hear that version 2.2.3 worked better for you. In the future, feel free to contact me if you have a problem with Trampoline.
