Type: ReviewDate: 5 Feb 2008 14:13Superb for converting VOB video/audio files directly off DVDs for use in FinalCut etc.
Simply set up your settings to maximum quality and then drag & drop the VOB. It's so simple to use. Couldn't live without it now.
Awesome!

Type: CommentsDate: 15 Jan 2008 18:41FAP2 was slug slow to import... 35 minutes for a 1600 professional Adobe/Bitstream/FF collection.
FAP3 wasn't much different with the exception of faster (to be expected) import. 3 licences & upgrades wasted on both.
I'm laughing at FAP4's so-called new features:
Smart Search -- which I would take it would offer fonts up as you type in the search box... LFE already has it
Smart Classification -- customisable columns of information... LFE already has it.
Smart Sets... LFE already has it
Font sets that dynamically update as users add new fonts... LFE already has it pretty much
Smart Installer... LFE already knows FAP, FontBook or Suitcase is already installed -- deactivates existing type management's stranglehold.
Smart Views... LFE already has it
Smart Store... no explanation to what this is?
Smart Diagnostics... lifted from ATM Deluxe! (i.e. is the font damaged YES/NO). One up to FAP4
Smart Activation... fancy words for Auto Activation/Deactivation and all that it entails. They pretty much all do it now although
With Unsanity's MENU-MASTER I've changed certain keyboard shortcuts to be identical to what I was used to with ATM Deluxe all those years.
I've only a few small annoyances with LFE in that I can lasso fonts the way I used to in OS9 under ATM Deluxe; there's no AutoActivation for FreeHand MX (nor obviously will there be now with a dead product) and Microsoft Office 2004 is temporamental with it (PowerPoint especially) at times, but then who's fault's that... Linotype or M$?
Apart from that, it's superb.

Type: CommentsDate: 14 Jan 2008 20:02I've been stung twice by FAP, both versions 2 and 3 and really can't see the point of all this "smart"ness that's built into 4.
I'll be sticking with Linotype's Font Explorer, which is as fully featured as FAP but is totally free! It works perfectly with Quark 7 and CS3.
Still nothing touches the simplicity of Adobe's ATM Deluxe 4.6 back in the 1990s.

Type: Hint/TipDate: 9 Jan 2008 13:43TO ALAN GLENN the developer:
Alan,
I've been a customer of most your versions since the early days in the mid-1990s; my current version on the MacPro has topped out at v5.94 and even though it's only PPC it still runs well and is a valuable part of my Final Cut Studio set-up.
My point though, like the post below me... why or why in 2008 are you introducing a new full version of your software that's not Universal Binary for Intel Macs... they've now hit critical mass and all us die-hard OS9Forever people (of which I was the absolute last) have *all* now moved on. We're all on OSX now Alan... nobody but nobody (even the Atari guys in music studios) are using OS8.6 / SoundManager-enabled machines any more so why, as an active developer are you still supporting them?
I'll honestly not be justifying upgrading to v6 or any further until you develop a UB build. Snd will just stagnate in what is now an extremely competitive market.

But Omniweb is still my No.1 browser with it's drawer tabs and superb Favourites/Bookmarks.

Type: ReviewDate: 5 Nov 2007 16:35At least it's stable, but basicallly agree with everything said by POIKKEUS below.
VLC player does most of my playback, as well if not better than Quicktime Player or any other. Quicktime still needs to sort it's AVI, Xvid and all the other flavours of codec before even competing with VLC. Even the Pro version doesn't come close.
Getting there Apple, but you need to get the basics right first.

Type: ReviewDate: 5 Sep 2007 10:59Absolutely fantastic. Super simple to use (drag & drop) and couldn't live without it now.
No more numpty PC users sending embedded Word docs with graphics.

Type: CommentsDate: 10 Aug 2007 08:50You 've been able to do this since v1.2 and it has worked perfectly ever since.
Every time you do an update you have to reset the resolution of each monitor attached by going into DISPLAYS > SETTINGS > ADVANCED -- picking the resolution from the slider and then the refresh rate otherwise everything will default to an eye-straining 60Hz.
The real updates this time are the addition of the Bootcamp panel in the Control Panels (which is basically a twin of the Startup disk further down the list), and fixing the corrupt garbled video problems on startup introduced with v1.3.
The Apple Software Updates application/panel also works more smoothly than before.
![]()
Type: ReviewDate: 10 Aug 2007 08:43Yet another update and yet another Bootcamp that doesn't install any decent support for Vista Ultimate... still no Mac keyboard support, still no Startup Disk control panel, still no volume control (due to no Mac keyboard), still no CD eject button (due to no Mac keyboard)... unlike the XP 32-bit version of the drivers which have worked flawlessly since v1.2.
Why is there this disparity between the drivers for XP and Vista?
On a positive note, v1.4 Bootcamp fixed the corrupt video on startup problems with XP 32-bit that were introduced with v1.3. Only a cold startup would fix it rather than booting out of Tiger into XP. Love the new Bootcamp or Startup disk choice in the XP control panels. Works just like Tiger. Just wish it would work with Vista is all.
Come on Apple - finger out please!

Type: ReviewDate: 20 Jul 2007 11:44Geez Joel, you love your updates dude! ;D That's three times I've installed Onyx this week from the 1.81 daily betas to this one.
v1.82 works great. TigerCacheWho? nowadays! :)
Kudos as always.

Type: ReviewDate: 21 Jun 2007 18:53Still the best piece of shareware - EVER!
I've been using it since the early 1990s throughout its evolution and Keith Turner's application is invaluable and the ONLY one out there to have a Boolean-based search system.
Apple take note for OSX10.5 Leopard. It's what you should have been basing OSX10.4 Spotlight on from the very start.
Could do with another update for the Intel Macs and a few interface tweaks for the late noughties but still works really quickly and does the job beautifully.

Type: ReviewDate: 14 Jun 2007 15:15Well I've hunted high and low for a silent, unassuming piece of software that worked almost identically to Connectix brilliant "Turbokeys" from their OS9-only COPY AGENT software (just waiting on somebody writing an equivalent to their "Smart Replace" in Copy Agent now too).
Works really well, although I'd like it to be easier to assign the Hotkey for the application I want to launch whenever the Application is dragged and dropped onto the canvas. It should be asking for the hotkey combination there and then rather than leave it blank. It is a little clunky to then have to go and double-click on relevant column to enter the key combination. It works perfectly well yes, but could be a little slicker.
It would have been nice if Beniot had seen Turbokeys in the old days.
Anyway, I would give it 4.5/5 at the moment due to the above, but am feeling generous today and *do* realise it's only at v1.1 of its development so can forgive my little quibble. It's stable though (in OSX 10.49 on my Intel MacPro) so I've paid the $15 registration and am very happy with it.

Type: ReviewDate: 7 Jun 2007 21:40Smooth, reliable upgrade from 1.2b to 1.3b.
Noticed an additional fix with the CONTROL PANEL > START-UP DISK
Even if you picked the OSX partition in 1.2b it always started up in XP. That has been fixed to work like ours now, so it restarts into whatever OS you command.
Only quirk was that it reset my video drivers (caused by the new Radeon drivers) back to 800x600 at 60Hz initially, but 30 seconds of tinkering in the CONTROL > DISPLAY panel fixed that.
Excellent job Apple!

Type: ReviewDate: 6 Jun 2007 11:23Absolute superb piece of software! I'm using Linotype Font Explorer X at the mo for all ATM-Deluxe-esque font management and even it's clean caches section doesn't do what FontNuke does.
After the necessary Restart everything works perfectly.
WOW! Kudos.

Type: ReviewDate: 16 May 2007 13:19Superb. Does exactly what it says on the tin.
It produces great .VOB files (the native Video files on DVDs) which you'll then need to convert to .MOV or any others you want to work in.
Pair this with EasyWMV which is a brilliant $15 convertor from VOB to *any* video format in a simple, gorgeous interface.
Both of these together are a force to be reckoned with!
Looking forward to version 3.

Type: ReviewDate: 27 Apr 2007 14:05Much better on an Intel MacPro now.
Up to now the game has run better and faster on the PC version than the Mac version (I run both).
Three differences only:
1) The little stubby lights around the maps glow RED or BLUE on the PC version; they're just pale static cyan on the MAC version. Much prettier on the PC.
2) The gun turrets on the PC file three accurate "bullet beams" (a triumvirate) which helps aiming. On the Mac we obviously have that ugly streaming lightning thing going on
3) On the Shees (sharing a similar anomaly to 2) - the wing tips glow orange on the PC when the shee is piloted, they do damn all on the Mac version. Much MUCH prettier on the PC.
Unfortunately even this superb U-B version of Halo hasn't addressed the three points above on the Mac / Intel Mac version... which is a shame.
PC version still wins (booting into XP 32-bit on MacPro) hands down.

Type: CommentsDate: 27 Apr 2007 14:02The screenshots are from the PC version and with all the settings maxxed out that way a new MacPro could handle it (with the Radeon X1900 card anyway). Up to now the game has run better and faster on the PC version than the Mac version (I run both).

Type: ReviewDate: 28 Mar 2007 19:07This is a waste of time... All you need is Quicktime Pro upgrade.
Open the Movie file.
Go to SHOW MOVIE PROPERTIES in "Window" menu
Click on VIDEO
Turn off Constrain image
And change your standard 4:3 ratio to 16:9 by typing in monitor resolutions e.g. PAL is 720 x 576... just change that to 1024 x 576 eh voila -- instant uncompressed anamorphic widescreen in its proper aspect ratio with proper black bars for 4:3 sets.

Type: CommentsDate: 18 Jan 2007 13:54Absolutely superb as always. Is rock solid on everything from an old speed-bumped G4 to a new Mac Pro, all running 10.38 at time of writing. Couldn't live without it now.

Still waiting for the Intel Mac drivers Alcatel/Thompson!!!!!!!

Type: CommentsDate: 10 Oct 2006 17:50Still waiting for Alcatel to get their finger out and give Intel Mac users the equivalent of their new Intel 64-bit PC drivers.
I've a new Mac Pro with a Mk2 SpeedTouch 330 (the square blue version) that hasn't connected to the Internet yet because of these laggards.
Intel Macs have been out since January 2006...
WE NEED UNIVERSAL BINARY NOW ALCATEL!!!! Wakey Wakey!!

Type: ReviewDate: 2 Oct 2006 20:35I've been using Fetch since version 3 on OS8.
Couldn't live without it for FTP; does what it says on the tin with minimum of fuss; and it's fast on every Mac I've tried it on over the years from an old G3/PowerMac7600 to a new MacPro with the new Intel UB builds.
Wonderful.

Type: ReviewDate: 9 Aug 2006 09:05Up to now we've only really had Font Agent Pro 3 and Suitcase to play with. Always hated the latter; the former was slow but stable although continuing to improve.
And then Linotype came along with this to completely smoke the other two out of the room in one fell swoop.
Simply cannot believe how good this is for version 1.0 software, and now with the many many dozens of fixes and improvements in 1.1 they've got my loyalty down pat. Quark 7 was the holy grail and they've sorted that.
Keep up the great work Linotype!

Type: CommentsDate: 6 Jun 2006 08:30WOW! I just couldn't understand why my Tiger Macs were all SOOOOOOO SLOWWWWWWWWWWW. 7 minute start-ups, everything like treacle.
Simple... Goodbye FontAgentPro 3! Hello Linotype Font Explorer (not to be confused with Font Explorer!). I feel like the first time I experienced the revelation and revolution of my beloved ATM Deluxe 4.6 during th early 1990s.
Kudos to Linotype for finally realising that ATM Deluxe's hole needed to be filled (nothing rude I may add!), and they've blended a superb iTunesMusicStore-esque font marketing concept with the most professional, high-end Font Management software I've yet seen and experienced on OSX, and double kudos for the most stable v1.01 of software I've ever used. Stable. Feature-filled and fantastc value.. being FREE.
DUMP the bohemoths -- Suitcase XI and FontAgentPro3 people! This is it. At last.

Three letters summarise:
W. O. W.
I was going to go home from work early last night; I eventually left at midnight after falling into Google Earth.
Marty McFly has just got his DeLorean and take Google Maps from 1955 to 2025.

Type: CommentsDate: 20 Dec 2005 11:09Loved the original QuitCSM control strip for OS9 for many years; this evolution is just on another level. MabaSoft just know how to write these invaluable little applications and the QUIT ALL command in this one is something I couldn't live without; but then he's bundled all those other new features from v1.4 onwards; v1.5 adds some more things from the QuitCSM days but it's even better now. Money well spent!

Type: ReviewDate: 8 Dec 2005 09:56Awesome. Have been a fan of Xpert Tools since the late 1990s with version 1.11. This adds functionality on top of that again. Some crashes on Quark 4.11 within OS9.22; so there are still some bugs for them to iron out; and ShadowCaster no longer shows in the Xpert CommandPads lists any more thus can't be added. Have ended up mixing it with 1.11 and 2.13 versions to get a full set of functionality.
