MARK_CAIRNS Following on from my 3-star hatred rating of 5.5.0 below, I'm awarding this update 5-stars again. All the problems with the initial release have now been fixed (I've been given their Beta for the past few weeks before this full release) and I'm a happy camper again. Big thanks to Scott and his colleagues for all their help over the past month. You deserve it. A++ (Version 5.5.1)

MARK_CAIRNS So when oh when will Unsanity start devoting resources to this must-have application again? The Adobe CS3 bug (Illustrator menus etc. with the sticky menus and the mouse pointer) in Tiger OSX 10.4.11 made this unusable and I had to begrudingly uninstall it. To say I miss it from my workflow would be an understatement. The 1.48 beta is just a joke. The implementation on Leopard OSX 10.56 is also incredibly buggy and I'm absolutely dying here without, especially with the industry software like Quark and CS3 being used every day. MARK_CAIRNS It really is still the most gorgeous of the Mac browsers. The tab system out to the left, and the Favourites dock (with your links and their relevant .ico file beside) at the top is by far the most elegant solution to any of the browsers. Only prob I've ever had with it is with HOTMAIL, but Firefox 3 sorts that out. Apart from that 90% of my daily web usage is (was) as a paying customer of OmniWeb. I also hope others now try it. FruitMenu | Aug 7 2008 |
MARK_CAIRNS 3.7beta5 works a treat for me. As Unsanity haven't listed the changes for the last couple of Betas over the past week or so as yet, here they are: Version 3.7b5 (August 6th, 2008) - Note: The price of FruitMenu has increased from $10 to $12. - Maybe sped up application launch a little. Please email us if you notice any problems with icons displaying in the FruitMenu enhanced Apple menu. Version 3.7b4 (July 30th, 2008) - Note: The price of FruitMenu has increased from $10 to $12. - In removing deprecated API calls, accidently stopped resolving aliases in the FruitMenu Items folder (it'd resolve the alias, then ignore the result). This has been fixed. Sadly, this also means there may be a significant increase in application launch speed if you have a large hotkey prescan setting. - You can tell the how long the scanning of FruitMenu Items takes by looking in the console (/Application/Utilities/Console) and looking at the line below "CreateMenuItem: FruitMenuItems" Version 3.7b3 (July 28th, 2008) - Note: The price of FruitMenu has increased from $10 to $12. - Removed all references to QuickTime. Now uses the superior ImageIO functionality to work with images. This has an unintended side effect of decreasing FruitMenu's load time at application launch. - Removed a lot of deprecated APIs and replaced them with modern, non-deprecated versions. - Removed some calls to the private CPS (CoreProcesses) APIs when there was a public replacement (many CPS functions still lack a replacement in 10.5.x). - Changed the gather option to choose a folder name based on the current user's locale settings. - Significantly reduced application launch time by only loading preference panes on demand. MARK_CAIRNS Absolutely terrific, modern update to the old Fontographer we all used to use in the early 1990s. Much more intuitive, easier to navigate, easier to play with... and easier to create OpenType for both Macs and PCs effortlessly. It all just works! I just converted an old problem Type 1 Postscript font I designed way back in the early days and it converted everything in the MacPro instantly, saved it out, dumped it into the management of Linotype Font Explorer and Quark 7 was using it 60 seconds later from start to finish. Awesome! How a Mac application should be. Now bought and paid for. A steal at $99 bucks. Unless you're a professional typographer you'll only ever need this one if you're in the general design industry. Works faultlessly on Tiger OSX 10.4.11 on MacPro. (Version 3.0)

MARK_CAIRNS FAP2 was slug slow to import... 35 minutes for a 1600 professional Adobe/Bitstream/FF collection. FAP3 wasn't much different with the exception of faster (to be expected) import. 3 licences & upgrades wasted on both. LFE already has it Smart Classification -- customisable columns of information... LFE already has it. Smart Sets... LFE already has it Font sets that dynamically update as users add new fonts... LFE already has it pretty much Smart Installer... LFE already knows FAP, FontBook or Suitcase is already installed -- deactivates existing type management's stranglehold. Smart Views... LFE already has it Smart Store... no explanation to what this is? Smart Diagnostics... lifted from ATM Deluxe! (i.e. is the font damaged YES/NO). One up to FAP4 Smart Activation... fancy words for Auto Activation/Deactivation and all that it entails. They pretty much all do it now although With Unsanity's MENU-MASTER I've changed certain keyboard shortcuts to be identical to what I was used to with ATM Deluxe all those years. I've only a few small annoyances with LFE in that I can lasso fonts the way I used to in OS9 under ATM Deluxe; there's no AutoActivation for FreeHand MX (nor obviously will there be now with a dead product) and Microsoft Office 2004 is temporamental with it (PowerPoint especially) at times, but then who's fault's that... MACSTERDAM I've been a FAP user since V1, and true, FAP 1 was so slow as to be unusable. FAP2 was marginally better, speed-wise that is. Version 3, however, really shone, and I found to be faster than other, including LFE. V4 is once again faster. True, FAP is catching up with LFE when it comes to features, but as nice as LFE is, when it comes to font handling, including (auto)activation, FAP is still the most reliable of all and still ahead of LFE at detecting font problems. As soon as LFE fixes these I'd switch in a heartbeat, because it's got the best gui, but until then I'm more than willing to pay an upgrade fee for FAP V4. (Version 4.0)

MACPREPRESS I was hoping that the 4.0 release would be better able to handle a couple things. *lessen the font cache corruption issue *be able to properly active the precise version of a font. From what I tested, the caches degrade about the same as version 3.X, so no improvement there. I saw it get somewhat better at recognizing some fonts. But still it had problems with common ones like Zapf Dingbats. Worse, after a bit of use, the plugin would crash InDesign. I've been testing Suitcase Fusion 12.1.7, and it's not a bed of roses either. Auto-activation seems largely disfunctional. I haven't tried Fontexplorer yet, but I guess it's time. (Version 4.0)

MARK_CAIRNS TO ALAN GLENN the developer: I've been a customer of most your versions since the early days in the mid-1990s; my current version on the MacPro has topped out at v5.94 and even though it's only PPC it still runs well and is a valuable part of my Final Cut Studio set-up. My point though, like the post below me... why or why in 2008 are you introducing a new full version of your software that's not Universal Binary for Intel Macs... they've now hit critical mass and all us die-hard OS9Forever people (of which I was the absolute last) have *all* now moved on. We're all on OSX now Alan... nobody but nobody (even the Atari guys in music studios) are using OS8.6 / SoundManager-enabled machines any more so why, as an active developer are you still supporting them? I'll honestly not be justifying upgrading to v6 or any further until you develop a UB build. Snd will just stagnate in what is now an extremely competitive market. (Version 6.0.2)

MARK_CAIRNS You 've been able to do this since v1.2 and it has worked perfectly ever since. Every time you do an update you have to reset the resolution of each monitor attached by going into DISPLAYS > SETTINGS > ADVANCED -- picking the resolution from the slider and then the refresh rate otherwise everything will default to an eye-straining 60Hz. The real updates this time are the addition of the Bootcamp panel in the Control Panels (which is basically a twin of the Startup disk further down the list), and fixing the corrupt garbled video problems on startup introduced with v1.3. The Apple Software Updates application/panel also works more smoothly than before. (Version 1.4b)

MARK_CAIRNS Yet another update and yet another Bootcamp that doesn't install any decent support for Vista Ultimate... still no Mac keyboard support, still no Startup Disk control panel, still no volume control (due to no Mac keyboard), still no CD eject button (due to no Mac keyboard)... unlike the XP 32-bit version of the drivers which have worked flawlessly since v1.2. Why is there this disparity between the drivers for XP and Vista? On a positive note, v1.4 Bootcamp fixed the corrupt video on startup problems with XP 32-bit that were introduced with v1.3. Only a cold startup would fix it rather than booting out of Tiger into XP. Love the new Bootcamp or Startup disk choice in the XP control panels. Works just like Tiger. Just wish it would work with Vista is all. Come on Apple - finger out please! (Version 1.4b)

KUPHD The disparity between Vista and XP comes with the fact that they are two completely different operating systems. As far as the drivers go, you're going through the same thing the vast majority of PC users are going through. Vista is just not ready for prime time. That's why I never upgrade a Microsoft operating system until at least the first Service Pack. The Windows OS is always extremely buggy and nothing works with it in its initial release. Don't blame Apple. Blame Microsoft for putting out shoddy software. (Version 1.4b)

I've been using it since the early 1990s throughout its evolution and Keith Turner's application is invaluable and the ONLY one out there to have a Boolean-based search system. Apple take note for OSX10.5 Leopard. It's what you should have been basing OSX10.4 Spotlight on from the very start. Could do with another update for the Intel Macs and a few interface tweaks for the late noughties but still works really quickly and does the job beautifully. (Version 2.7)

MARK_CAIRNS Well I've hunted high and low for a silent, unassuming piece of software that worked almost identically to Connectix brilliant "Turbokeys" from their OS9-only COPY AGENT software (just waiting on somebody writing an equivalent to their "Smart Replace" in Copy Agent now too). Works really well, although I'd like it to be easier to assign the Hotkey for the application I want to launch whenever the Application is dragged and dropped onto the canvas. It should be asking for the hotkey combination there and then rather than leave it blank. It is a little clunky to then have to go and double-click on relevant column to enter the key combination. It works perfectly well yes, but could be a little slicker. It would have been nice if Beniot had seen Turbokeys in the old days. Anyway, I would give it 4.5/5 at the moment due to the above, but am feeling generous today and *do* realise it's only at v1.1 of its development so can forgive my little quibble. It's stable though (in OSX 10.49 on my Intel MacPro) so I've paid the $15 registration and am very happy with it. (Version 1.1)

MARK_CAIRNS Smooth, reliable upgrade from 1.2b to 1.3b. Noticed an additional fix with the CONTROL PANEL > START-UP DISK Even if you picked the OSX partition in 1.2b it always started up in XP. That has been fixed to work like ours now, so it restarts into whatever OS you command. Only quirk was that it reset my video drivers (caused by the new Radeon drivers) back to 800x600 at 60Hz initially, but 30 seconds of tinkering in the CONTROL > DISPLAY panel fixed that. Excellent job Apple! (Version 1.3b)

On the Mac we obviously have that ugly streaming lightning thing going on 3) On the Shees (sharing a similar anomaly to 2) - the wing tips glow orange on the PC when the shee is piloted, they do damn all on the Mac version. Much MUCH prettier on the PC. Unfortunately even this superb U-B version of Halo hasn't addressed the three points above on the Mac / Intel Mac version... which is a shame. MARK_CAIRNS Still waiting for Alcatel to get their finger out and give Intel Mac users the equivalent of their new Intel 64-bit PC drivers. I've a new Mac Pro with a Mk2 SpeedTouch 330 (the square blue version) that hasn't connected to the Internet yet because of these laggards. Intel Macs have been out since January 2006... WE NEED UNIVERSAL BINARY NOW ALCATEL!!!! Wakey Wakey!! (Version 3.0.1.2)

Fetch | Oct 2 2006 |
MARK_CAIRNS I've been using Fetch since version 3 on OS8. Couldn't live without it for FTP; does what it says on the tin with minimum of fuss; and it's fast on every Mac I've tried it on over the years from an old G3/PowerMac7600 to a new MacPro with the new Intel UB builds. Wonderful. (Version 5.1.1)

FontExplorer X Pro | Aug 9 2006 |
MARK_CAIRNS Up to now we've only really had Font Agent Pro 3 and Suitcase to play with. Always hated the latter; the former was slow but stable although continuing to improve. And then Linotype came along with this to completely smoke the other two out of the room in one fell swoop. Simply cannot believe how good this is for version 1.0 software, and now with the many many dozens of fixes and improvements in 1.1 they've got my loyalty down pat. Quark 7 was the holy grail and they've sorted that. Keep up the great work Linotype! (Version 1.1)

MARK_CAIRNS WOW! I just couldn't understand why my Tiger Macs were all SOOOOOOO SLOWWWWWWWWWWW. 7 minute start-ups, everything like treacle. Simple... Goodbye FontAgentPro 3! Hello Linotype Font Explorer (not to be confused with Font Explorer!). I feel like the first time I experienced the revelation and revolution of my beloved ATM Deluxe 4.6 during th early 1990s. Kudos to Linotype for finally realising that ATM Deluxe's hole needed to be filled (nothing rude I may add!), and they've blended a superb iTunesMusicStore-esque font marketing concept with the most professional, high-end Font Management software I've yet seen and experienced on OSX, and double kudos for the most stable v1.01 of software I've ever used. Stable. Feature-filled and fantastc value.. being FREE. DUMP the bohemoths -- Suitcase XI and FontAgentPro3 people! This is it. At last. (Version 1.0.1)

Google Earth | Jan 11 2006 |
MARK_CAIRNS The 10th January, 2006 will go down in the history as the day we'll all look back on in 20 years and say "How on (Google)Earth did we ever live without this Killer App" before then? I was going to go home from work early last night; I eventually left at midnight after falling into Google Earth. Marty McFly has just got his DeLorean and take Google Maps from 1955 to 2025. Application Wizard | Dec 20 2005 |
MARK_CAIRNS Loved the original QuitCSM control strip for OS9 for many years; this evolution is just on another level. MabaSoft just know how to write these invaluable little applications and the QUIT ALL command in this one is something I couldn't live without; but then he's bundled all those other new features from v1.4 onwards; v1.5 adds some more things from the QuitCSM days but it's even better now. Money well spent! (Version 1.5)

XPert Tools Pro | Dec 8 2005 |
MARK_CAIRNS Awesome. Have been a fan of Xpert Tools since the late 1990s with version 1.11. This adds functionality on top of that again. Some crashes on Quark 4.11 within OS9.22; so there are still some bugs for them to iron out; and ShadowCaster no longer shows in the Xpert CommandPads lists any more thus can't be added. Have ended up mixing it with 1.11 and 2.13 versions to get a full set of functionality. (Version 2.1.3)
