MARCISLAYER  "There are so many clocks visible, even while widgets are up, I wish I had the option to hide them. Small point."

You can change to the more compact "small" mode for the clocks if that helps. It's available on the back of the widget, or by pressing "d" when the clock tab is open.

MARCISLAYER  "The ability to select which calendars appear in the Events tab. Currently it's one or all, would like to select just a few."

Version 1.02 now has this :)

"The ability to tint events with the color label used in iCal for the calendar."

We might add this in the future. I'm sure there would be a nice way to do it.

MARCISLAYER  Just a quick note to say that we will be updating iStat desktop (as it will be known from version 3) at some point.

It's going to take us a while to do what we want with it. Please be patient... it'll be worth it!

iStat Menus

MARCISLAYER  "First off is the fact that it's a menu extra. While a great API, it has been deprecated."

It wouldn't be iStat menus if it wasn't a menu extra. Where did you hear the API was deprecated?

"The next major problem is that the menu gauges aren't anywhere near as useful as they could be. Either you keep a lot of ugly labels on your menu bar (CPU, MEM, HD, etc) or you can't tell what gauge is what."

Could 1000rpm mean anything other than a fan speed?

Coule 60º mean anything other than a temperature?

Sure, you could have a % in the menubar mean either CPU or memory, but that's up to the user to configure. Our defaults certainly shouldn't cause confusion.

"Bluetooth? Clock? Why are these in there at all? They add no real functionality over the original Apple counterparts."

Not true. We have battery indicators for Apple BlueTooth keyboards and mice, and world clock and a monthly calendar. Keep in mind these are version 1.0 starting points. We still have more to add.

"Finally, with all of the hoo-hah over this, the iStat application has been completely ignored for eons. Perhaps this will change now, but I'm no longer holding my breath."

iSlayer is only two people... and only 1 person full time. It takes a LOT of effort to get something like iStat menus to a decent version 1.0. iStat desktop (as the desktop application will be known from version 3 onward) hasn't been forgotten. Not sure why you'd say "ignored for eons", as the last update was October 4th, 2006.

No point designing an icon for an app that's not going to be developed!

"So much potential, but just not there. And after all the hype and lack of updates on other software, I'm really disappointed."

Anyway. It's entirely up to you if you use it... just keep in mind that this is free software, being developed by only 2 people. Even if you'd paid a lot of money for iStat menus, I still think your comments might be a bit harsh for a version 1.0 application.

Thanks for taking the time to write a review though.

Cheers,

Marc.

MARCISLAYER  Thanks for the nice words :)

You can already reposition your menubar items... simply hold down apple and drag them. You can also drag unwanted items out of the menubar to remove them. This works with a lot of 3rd party menubar items and all of Apple's menubar items.

We didn't do this though... so thank Apple for it!
