Yep

MAR6473  I don't know why a few people are unhappy on here. These guys have been developing Yep for quite awhile... They really listen to their users and make unbelievable products. Seriously, there is nothing out there can do what Yep and Fresh does. They are functional and the tagging user interface is genius. I used to try to manage all my files in folders but I'd forget where I put them or what I called them. Yep and Fresh lets you browse, search and find any file or image with ease. They have a great forum with lots of happy users and their customer support is great. I too bought the bundle less than a month before the cut off for free upgrades to Yep 2... A bit of a drag but whatever... The upgrade is $20 which is a steal for an application that I literally use everyday.

MAR6473  Again, got this app with the Promo. I had looked at it before but my trial ran out. I am amazed at everything this thing can do for the price. Seriously, the regular price is $50? This thing does loads great stuff. It really looks useful for people who really take serious notes and need to keep research organized. I love the PDF annotation feature. You can drop images into your outline or you can let them float freely anywhere on the page.

It actually has really nice task management that you can sync to iCal calendar events so you can get it on an iPhone.

My only complaint is that the tool bar is a little bit clunky looking. It just looks kind of weird. It works fine...it just looks kind of awkward and not nearly as clean as it should be for all the work that must have gone into this application.

It has a bit of a learning curve but the documentation is great and it does sooooo much. Overall, I'm very happy with it.

MAR6473  Why is the bookmark font so blurry? This is a nice app but a few basic things like quicklook and an option to adjust the font would be really practical.

MAR6473  The new PDF web clipper works flawlessly. Evernote does not do everything I want it to but it is free and it does what it claims to do perfectly. It still needs sub-folders, export options, and a tag filter but otherwise it works VERY well. The Thumbnail previews are really nice. It's a fast and light note taking application that let's you collect information from the web really easily. Great for every day use.

MAR6473  This is a great application. The developer has been constantly developing it. If you try it you'll see that it is much better at capturing web pdfs than other similar apps. I've been using it for quite some time and I just realized that you can Quicklook your documents right from the shelf. If you find it a bit slow when browsing I found that disabling the icon previews speeds it up a lot. It's great for notes, journaling and collecting snippets of information when doing research. It stores your notes and files in a standard file structure within your documents folder so you can use other file browsers if you want.

Things

****.

MAR6473  I'm a graduate student and I work part-time for a non-profit. I manage a lot of different tasks in different areas so I've been excited about the recent development of the GTD type apps. I own Omnifocus for the desktop and for the iPhone. I found the pair great for managing larger projects but frustrating for throwing together quick to do lists and for prioritizing and managing my time when I have a lot of different things to get done. I found the columns everywhere a bit distracting. I do however, love the clipping service and the ability to organize everything by context on the iPhone.

I also bought the iPhone version of Things and I have the beta desktop version. The iPhone version of Things is ingenious. I started using it over Omnifocus because of the ability to view items that are "next" without messing with due dates. Also, the ability to quickly tag items "today" allows you to quickly prioritize. The app is pleasant to work in. I have not been using the desktop version of Things because the of lack of integration of features into the iPhone app. e.g. If I create a task in the "people" section of Things on my desktop...It doesn't sync to the iPhone app. But, with the upcoming implementation of tags...which will effectively allow "contexts"...I am looking toward Things as a really solid way to go.

They do offer an educational price on their website which is a nice gesture for students.

Personally, I feel that $50 is a fair price for an app that you will literally use everyday. Most potential buyers are most likely already using some time of To Do application...So, I think a cross-grade offer for other GTD users would be in the benefit of all.

MAR6473  Has anyone else noticed that there is absolutely no way to export notes out of Evernote? You can only export as an Evernote archive. No other options. I wonder why?

MAR6473  This is a great app. You just have to keep in mind what type of info you are putting in there. You probably don't want to through in security conscious information.

Can we please get a hot key for a new blank note? There's one to paste info from the clipboard and to take a screenshot but nothing to just open a new note...

A Tag Cloud would be great too... And folders within notebook...

Firefox

MAR6473  Firefox is a great browser but it doesn't work with the services menu and you can only cut and paste plain text into other applications. It doesn't work well with other applications. You have to be content to use the firefox plugins for clippings etc... It's also quite slow compared to safari, camino or omniweb. Otherwise, it has great features. I would use it as my main browser if it weren't for the above mentioned short-comings...

ZZAMBONI  I agree. While Firefox is very nice, and since 3.0 it looks very nice as well on a Mac, it still doesn't properly integrate with the rest of the system. Can't control it using Automator, can't copy rich text out of it, and any Cocoa-based extensions (e.g. Afloat) don't work with it. I keep Firefox up to date on my system and I use it when needed, but my everyday browser is Safari for the integration.

Curio
Oct 5 2008

MAR6473  I've been using Curio for a couple of months now. Once you start using it you realize what a unique program it is. I looked at it before but the price turned me off right away. $149 seems like a lot when I was already using another note taking app that cost $35 for collecting info and managing research projects. Beyond being able to collect a lot of information and organize it, it lets you spread it out, move it around, interconnect it, etc... It's sort of like being able to spread all your bits of info out onto a big table to get a good look at everything. The mind mapping feature does everything I need and is great for organizing your information (There are other mind mapping apps that have more features than Curio. You just have to try it to see if it does everything you want. For me, there is a lot of strength in Curio's ability to do a bunch of thing within one document). Omnioutliner and Omnigraffle are fantastic programs but I can do everything I used to do in both of them in Curio. The developers are very responsive which has reassured my confidence in the app. For project organization, research, and collecting information on a given subject, it does everything I need. If you need advanced word processing tools, you can embed Word or Pages documents into your Curio project. They give you an extended 60 day trial so it gives you enough time to really try it out. If you just want to mind map, there are apps that just do that, if you just want something to dump bits of info into to collect over time, Journler is great. But, for general project and research management with a lot of flexibility that really helps you get organized, Curio really stands out.

Journler
Aug 28 2008

MAR6473  Of all the journal type, info collecting style apps I really like the feel of Journler. It can do a couple of things that MacJournal can't. Namely, the way that Journler attaches files, contacts, exported emails and pictures to a single entry is really handy. The issue is that Journler is kind of quirky. Sometimes, it won't open switch between entries and sometimes it won't delete a note I tell it to delete. MacJournal is incredibly stable and always does exactly what it says. I wonder if my issues with Journler are just a glitch on my Mac but it seems like others say that it is a bit quirky too. It's a good app that does a lot but I'm sticking with MacJournal for now.

MAR6473  I have stuck with Safari and OmniWeb for a long time. I've tried previous versions of Firefox and found them to bulky and just not as slick and not as fast as Safari. Version 3 of Firefox looks really slick and is really fast. I love the Bookmark features. The ability to tag your bookmarks directly from the browser search bar sold it for me. You can create smart folders of your tagged bookmarks and keep them right on your bookmark bar. it comes with pre-set smart folders like "Most Visited" and "Recently Bookmarked".

One request is that when you click on the "edit bookmark" icon in the main browser window it only lets you edit tags and folders. If you want to edit the description or add a keyword you have to open the separate bookmarks browser.

Overall, I am really impressed. Thanks to everybody who spent so much time on this!!!!

Together

****.

MAR6473  This is a great little application. I do a lot of research online and I had loads of bookmarks in Safari for things that i needed to go back to later. With Together I can create Web Archives and Bookmarks really fast by just dragging them into the shelf. It is great if you need to manage a lot of bookmarks because you can tag them, add comments and label them any way you want.

There is also an automator action that watches my documents folder for anything that i move in there. It's really handy.

I also had a million little text edit documents that i linked to Together. Now it is really easy to find the one i need and flip through a bunch of them at the same time.

I love the smart folders but because i use a lot of them it would be great to be able to put them into folders.

It would also be nice if the "Quicknote" window didn't disappear when you clicked out of it. That way you could paste multiple things into a note or just go back to it to type until you want to close the window.

Overall, I've tried several comparable programs and Together beats them all. It is more Stable than Soho notes, it's more functional than Yojimbo and it just has a nice and clean feel to it.

The developer is great and very responsive. Together is really worth giving a try.
