MAKAI Well, thank you for bothering to share your experiences. So I gave it another whirl, and indeed this time it works for me (under 10.5.4; last time I tried I was running 10.5.2). I still have some issues with the Minimize-in-place feature but I think I should better post these findings on the WindowsShade product page. I am saying this just because mentioning any issues is simply meant to compare experiences with other users, not to denounce the company and their products. Same time I must say I have restrained from bringing up those issues with Unsanity. I felt insecure whether they would find any feedback helpful at all at this point where they feel they are are wrestling with Leopard. (Version 1.5.1b4)

MAKAI Same here, under 10.5.4. Still not available on their website. Kind of funny... Looking from the file dates, I'd say this version has been put together in early April. And they still don't have it on their site. I wonder if the release to Macupdate had not been intended. Probably they alredy do have a working version of WindowShade... maybe since long, just as long as the working FontCard... (Version 1.5.1b4)

MAKAI I dare to disagree. I like the idea of a system-wide spell-checking but sometimes the dots simply get in the way. For example, when starting to type an English text like this one here before realizing that the spell-checker is just set to German -- then all the text becomes 'formatted' in red underline, quite a nuisance. Worse, simply switching the spell-check on the text to English won't make the dots go away, until each single word gets 'kicked' with a double-click. (Version 1.0)

MAKAI They thought hard (and have IMHO succeeded) to come up with an easy interface to a fairly powerful backup solution. Been using Retrospect for more than 10 years, and while memeo cannot automatically restore a backup target in any given state at any given time, I must say I never really needed this. What I needed the most was to go back to archived versions of specific files, and memeo does support that well enough. OK, as such memo is maybe not a tool for *system* backup and restoration, rather for user data. -- While memeo does not store all the backup files into a single file I have come to appreciate having direct Finder access to my backup data esp. since it did happen to me that I had to discard valuable backups created with some other backup software because their backup sets had developed internal issues and they never even bothered to come up with some automatic routine to check integrity of their backup sets. -- Speaking of automatic operations, execution of scheduled backups does not work with all backup applications under OS-X. Whereas memeo goes into action as soon as I connect the backup drive. Yes, I really think that's worth mentioning. -- Finally, I noticed no speed issues on my MB over FW400 compared to other backup solutions that I know. Specifically I notice no chance in computer performance when memeo goes about it work in the background. -- memeo is probably the type of solution to recommend when your wife or grandpa ask you whether the pictures on their computer are "safe". MAKAI I find 20 items too limiting. Currently, I use KoolClip with a user-defined limit of 100 items and always find what I'm looking for, but I am not sure whether it'll make it along when moving to Leopard. Also, I use a 20-items-only clipboard recorder at work (where I have to use a PC) and at least once per week find myself looking at the hostory list and say "Oh, it's already gone..." FRIEDDYLAN Try installing a previous version found at my download page and let me know if you have a problem please. Otherwise you may be having other problems that affect the clean install. One thing I found with failed CUPS installations is that some PPC applications like MS Office will not launch correctly or crash at launch. Still other PPC apps should continue to work fine. I have yet to resolve the issues you are experiencing once core system elements are completely hosed short of an Archive install of the system from Apple's discs. I have, however, come to the conclusion that the problems existed before CUPS was installed - installation simply makes a bad situation worse. (Version 1.3.2)

MAKAI "New Edit Window with layering control" is an almost too prosaic description for a facility offering a method that I've always regarded the most natural way to edit photos but which I've found surprisingly hard to find: Define an output size which adds a layer onto the photo, then size and move the original 'against' the layer frame until it does contain exactly the desired detail of the motive. This adds a lot of value to ImageWell! MAKAI Indeed, a promising start! It's fast while I find the displaying quality better in some circumstances than my so-far favourite JView and certainly more than sufficient for quick and hobbyist checks of new material. I am still fumbling with changing displayed size using keyboard controls though. Besides, it would be nice having a preference to open pictures in other than "Fit" size. Another boon for starters would be to display the pixel size of the displayed picture in some prominent place. I hope this app will continue and grow. (Version 1.0.1)

MAKAI Compared to BatChmod, iRepair saves me to OK one application interaction on every single permission change -- BatChmod keeps asking to OK its request for donations despite I've done so long time ago. Very annoying when re-thinking deep-rooted system settings. On the other hand, I find it much quicker in BatChmod to locate the most-often needed users. So far, I failed to get the users listing order in iRepairs' pulldown menus. Maybe add prefs to allow customized sorting orders. A nice touch of iRepair is to display the permission settings by that 3-digit number. Suggestion: Display respective numeric ID along with every user in the pulldown menues. -- TNX! MAKAI With MyPopBarrier I've finaIly found an inexpensive (actually free) solution to kill spam directly on the server. Basically easy to setup and use since it runs locally from user's machine, under the OS-X GUI. Works accross multiple email accounts -- much quicker than logging in and out of a number of webmail accounts. Also, selecting messages for purging is a snap; plus messages can get pre-selected as spam or non-spam based on keywords and origin. Not much "bells and whistles" in the latter facility. But appears to work better so far than other spam filter rule systems I've tried elsewhere, although it takes a while (or simply an application restart?) for a new rule to get considered. Generally, documentation (squeezed in the About dialog) is a bit scarce. What's that tiny telefon icon lower down righthand side? Seems to switch some function on/off -- yet which one? TOM.25 Thank you for your review. I've made a squeezed document because it's hard to do (in English, I'French) and because nobody never read the Doc ;-) . You don't have to restart after changed the list of words, just click Check List button in the Dictionaries panel (where are the list of words). It could be long if there's a lot of email. The 2 bevel button on the bottom left and right corner were here for me to debug the app. When click the phone bevel button, a small window appear for an account, then close and reappear for the following account etc. (Technical reason : I can't close the module which dialog with the server, I've to close the window containing this module. If not I can't change account). (Version 2.2.2)

Dantz Retrospect | Aug 27 2006 |
MAKAI As I've found out the hard way, Retrospect had never backup up a couple of files on which -- for whatever reasons -- the Other privilege was set to No Access.
