MACPLANET  *Finally* a very simple yet important feature has been implemented: It now is possible to keep the TV window in the foreground. Thanks!

MACPLANET  Finally a simple app for creating KML files from GPS logs. I wonder why nobody wrote this before ...

Very well done, thanks!

MACPLANET  Unfortunately the author has not increased the version number when he released the UB version, so the installer assumes that you have the current version already installed if, for example, you migrated your setup from a PPC machine.

Solution:

Remove the receipt files from the old installers (which have been migrated by the migration tool) -- afterwards the installer works fine.

The following files have to be deleted:

/Library/Receipts/aspell.pkg

/Library/Receipts/Spelling.pkg

Anton Leuski has confirmed the problem, but obviously has not updated his Readme.

MATTHIAS DAMM  There has been a longer discussion between the Captain FTP support and me about my posting here.

Just one comment from me: It is true that I did not pay for Captain FTP directly, but I received the license as part of a paid subscription, so I did not get the license for free from my viewpoint.

I also think that I can comment on a software even if I did not pay for it directly. And my main point is that version 4.2 was no free upgrade, and I would have had to pay the upgrade fee. This has been changed for 4.3.

MATTHIAS DAMM  Not a bad app, but expensive.

In the past, the authors have been charging high update fees for minor updates like 4.1 and 4.2 if you did not subscribe to the expensive "Upgrade Protection".

4.3 is free to all 4.x users now (bravo to this decision!), but I would not expect that this will be true for future updates as well.

The interface seems to have grown less clumsy than in earlier versions, but still is not really Mac-like.

Check out the alternatives before spending your money here, there are plenty of better alternatives (free and commercial)!

PIOTR LUCZAK  Although we respect Herr Damm's right to express his opinion of our software, we would like to point out a few salient points.

This user has never paid for Captain FTP and has received free licenses for versions:

3.1

3.1.1

3.2

3.3

3.5

4.01

4.3

We're not happy with the users comments based on the fact that he has not been required to pay for any updates in a period spanning from

December 2003, with the exception of version 4.2. The user did not contact us to complain that 4.2 was not a free update and was spurred to action under the false impression that 4.3 is also a paid update.

He has since acknowledged this in his review.

Apart from Herr Damm's dislike of the interface he has reported no technical or performance issues with Captain FTP. Although Captain FTP's twin browser window is not Mac-like in a traditional sense it is far superior to single browser applications in terms of file managment and reducing workflow.

The user is correct there are alternatives but we would like to remind Herr Damm of an old phrase "you get what you pay for".

We have invited Herr Damm to offer his insight to improve the interface and we invite any user who would like to request enhancements to the interface to contact us at:

mac_support@xdsnet.de

All contributions are welcome and appreciated.

MATTHIAS DAMM  Very nice idea, but Indy is complete unusuable on a slow mac (like my G3/500 iBook) -- it takes all available processor speed and even then is not able to play music without cracks and dropouts.

Great concept, but poor implementation.

MATTHIAS DAMM  This software is absolutely marvellous. I use it to organize quite a large amount of information for my Ph.D. thesis, and it has turned out to be much more flexible and easy-to-use than a "old-fashioned" and yet very relyable.

The autor also offers great support, bugs are fixed in no-time and I managed to get some feature requests into this beta...

Definitely one of the most important applications I am working with.
