I love this app. Some things are not right yet, though. Considering the fast and furious pace of OSX updates, this is understandable.

To the point: I ran usual cron scripts; then I ran Update LS Database. Bad idea. Process ran, finder quit, would not restart. No finder. So I did a manual power shutdown because you can't force quit anything without a finder (at least I don't know how) and I did reboot finally after 5 very nervous minutes. Prefs are messed up, and everything is slow to launch, but no loss of data as far as I can tell. I don't know if this will happen to someone else. But, for now, I can't personally rate the app. I'll wait a while.

I CAN say this- the Alaska nights in winter must be a bummer - the interface is a bit depressing. Please use progress bars instead of barber poles... or, like MainMenu or TinkerTool System, open a log window so the user can see what's being done. A lot of us terminal geeks (and I use the word terminal in both senses) just stare at our screens while these apps run. I can also say that I think I spend entirely too much time worrying about maintenance apps!

Carry on! Excalibur!

I have a question.

I like LCC and the new version seems OK so far. I'll give my rating when I have tried out all the functions on 10.5.4. The makers of LCC seem right on top of the update game, and they are obviously doing a pretty good job of it.

To the point: Under the "MAINTAIN" menu, there's a new (?) option called "Repair Home Folder ACL". Wow am I scared of ACL's!

When I used OSX's Disk Utility to repair permissions after the install of 10.5.4, I noticed there was a new ACL, on my application folder. I tried all my apps and everything seems to work so far.

So my question is two-fold:

a) Should I worry about the ACL on my Apps folder, and b) should I run the "Repair Home Folder ACL" ? Thanks to anyone who can answer this.

I love TinkerTool System and think it's great for cleaning up my system and running the scripts. I still use Disk Utility in 10.5.3.

The only thing, could you check this out, please? In my system, the CUPS won't delete (I use an HP printer) and the app says there are no logs there, but there are, I just can't find them manually.

There is a list of like 300 old jobs in that file when I use my print utility to check it.

Otherwise, this is nitpicking. Great app, and a great interface. I am avoiding those ACLs though! Thanks, Doc.

Seems like the last poster is right, at least on my machine - it DID hang on permissions for like an hour (takes Disk Utility about 15 minutes) so I think there's an issue there. But it's a great app, worth believing in. All the other commands seem to work, so it's a matter of tracking that bug. Don't despair, Alaska. We need you and we're with you.

I'm with you on that. Onyx rocks and we miss it. THAT'S what the cat means by that, admin!

HEY JOEL-

Wassup? We love your program and anxiously await an update.

Don't let the naysayers get you down. A few slings and arrows are part of it all, and you gotta roll with it. You have a ton of talent and a knack for programming. Go for it before Apple changes the file paths or something!

May the Schwartz be with you!

On my newly-updated 10.5.3 - an inability for shut-down was fixed by running the chrons and deleting caches. Good first run for a solid (if somewhat unattractive) program. Looks ain't everything!

some scripts run fine, others hang. for me there seems to be no specific task that hangs all the time, and none that i can run with confidence. i've never seen it behave this way. we miss the rock!

I just ran Onyx through the paces for several days and it seems stable and solid on my system running 10.5.2. No hangs or moments of panic. It's a power tool, no doubt about it. And the documentation is coming along great. The help files really are helpful. If you need help with the English, send me the text and I'll clean it up for you when I get time. Applause!

LCC has matured over the past year, but the Leopard OS obviously threw a few curves to developers of system maintenance utilities. LCC 4.0.4 has met the challenges and runs cleaner, faster, and with more stability than ever. This is one case where you should read the extensive manual, because there's a larger feature-set than meets the eye at first. Thanks, Alaska!

It doesn't seem to me that "repair permissions" is working in 4.0.2. It hung for 45 minutes, barber pole spinning all the while. I know I should never do this, but I force-quit LCC in the middle of the hang. I repaired permissions in Apple's Disk Utility and, fortunately, permission repair was fine and took about 3 or 4 minutes. I used Clix too -I'm scared of Clix, and the guy that compiled it scares me too- but it seemed to help, and everything is fine again. I'm on Leopard, 10.5.1. My Mac is a G5 dual 2 GHz w/ 1.5 GB of DDR SDRAM.

I like LLC because of the added features but would like to see the app give more info to the user, like MainMenu (did) and Onyx does. I'm waiting for Onyx and appreciate Joel taking his time with it.

LLC is a good app and can be great. It has some GUI problems and seems pretty slow. Is that just me?

Z0219...gee, it's a free app, a gift, and a great one too. This developer is giving you this wonderful app and you whine about too many updates? Wow, how lame.

This app can't get much better. It does its job and has never let me down, from cleaning caches to optimizing system performance, all safely. Unlike TCC, I can walk away for a few minutes and the app will restart for me, and I'll hear the start-up chime...that beautiful F major chord...it IS F major, isn't it?

And I wonder how many Onyx users customize their version. When I'm done with my customization, which includes changing the app's icon to #4 and deleting all of the others, plus deleting all the unused .lproj files, plus deleting the 3 variations of control icons, the app goes from weighing in at 17.9 Mb down to a mere 1.5 Mb.

What a great app. It should ship with every Mac, and Joel should be working for Apple if he isn't already.

Thank you, Joel. You are gifted and generous. Five stars as usual.

/Library/Receipts, huh? Delete? If you delete those files, you'll be lucky to even boot on your start-up disc. DO NOT DELETE ANYTHING in /Library/Receipts!!! Whoever wrote this "script" has NO knowledge of OSX.

Excellent. Onyx seems even more stable. The start-up after automatic shutdown seems quicker. Whatever you did, please keep doing it. Thanks for a great product, Joel.

Joel really should be working for Apple, and Onyx should be THE app of choice for the maintenance scripts. No other app does such a good job with such stability and user configurability. Another (paid) app asks for my admin password at least 5 times every time I use it. Still another cleans some files out, but not completely. Ask it to delete browser caches and history and it ... doesn't.

Only Onyx has been a consistent winner on all fronts. The support is great, the interface polished, the functionality superior, and the interface intuitive and customizable. FIVE STARS for Joel Barierre, Titanium Software, and Onyx.

Dear Joel;

Your work is so much appreciated by so many of us.

I hope this is just an issue for me alone, but the beta 3 version breaks on 10.4.10 (G5, PPC) - it just freezes at startup, as does Maintenance.

Good luck getting the code straight. When your app gets listed on apple.com, even if it's a beta, you know you're doing something right.

We all wish you the best!
