MACGURL Once again this new version (4.0.22) bounced in the dock upon first start, would not force quit, and required a hard shutdown. I started up my Mac again and wanted to throw LCC away. Ah, but first one must launch it to deinstall its innards. This time LCC started up so I decided to accept the first crash as an anomaly and try some functions before I uninstalled. Acceptance of password is (always) followed by a 2 second wait. Why? The "Clean Finder" function stalled the app again, so I had to force quit through the finder (this time it worked), then restart the app, uninstall ClamX engine and uninstall LCC, and then trash, restart, and fix things with Onyx. It should be noted that "uninstall LCC" does NOT fully uninstall LCC, as the package receipt and .plist file were left behind. It should also be noted that 3 dots after a menu item (in most Mac apps) indicate a new window or menu of choices. Not so with LCC, as it goes right into the task without missing a beat. And why does the app's GUI seem dated? I know nothing about coding languages like RealBasic and Cocoa, but it doesn't fit with Leopard's own interface. And this is admittedly a minor point. But jerky barber-poles aren't reassuring, and there is NO progress bar at all on the "Clean Finder" function. It cleans the .DS_store files alright, but when is it done? I suppose one is reduced to guesswork. I sent an email to jlowrey@northernSW.com and it bounced back to me as "undeliverable: address does not exist." I don't think LCC is right for me until it gets an overhaul. It may work great for others. (Version 4.0.22)

MACGURL Excellent upgrade. All tasks are smooth as silk. I think they need you at Apple, Joel, considering their last few "updates". It's amazing to see a free app from a devoted developer, still keeping up with the coding idiosyncracies of a mega-corporation that seems rudderless at the moment. Seeing as how they just broke "repair permissions" with their last iTunes/Front Row update and are now faced with releasing a NEW update to update their last update, and taking note of the fact that many recent updates have created new bugs not previously in existence, talent like yours is sorely needed in Cupertino. You have my respect and my thanks. (Version 2.0.4)

MACGURL I just ran 'Update LS Database' and the finder quit and would not restart. I was unable to quit LCC. I was unable to use 'option-cmmnd-esc'. I had to 'pull the plug' and then repair permissions and do a drive repair from my install disk. Not good. (Version 4.0.19)

MACGURL One small bug pour moi: when deleting the sound file caches - the plug-ins for iTunes I think - my app Sound Studio stops functioning afterwards. I think it has something to do with a special plug-in that Freeverse Software throws in there. Minor stuff. Not everyone has Sound Studio. Back to Onyx. This app rocks. Get ready for Snow Leopard, Joel. Don't get a drinking problem over this. Put a few dollars charge on this baby. It's a killer app. You must be the most beleaguered and under-appreciated designer in the world. Keep at it, and you will succeed at anything you do. Thank you for all of these years of work and research. Many of us love you for it. (Version 1.9.6)

MACGURL I apologize. First for the rating - I should have just commented. A nit I am, as Yoda would say. Second, the developer explained it to me. and I was way off base. I tried it tonight and it works great. I have no other way to erase my faux pas than to give it lots of stars, and it deserves them. Thanks for the free present, and excuse an old lady on too much levothyroxine. (Version 1.20)

MACGURL I think this is the one, Joel. It didn't clear Firefox caches and history, but that's about the only bug I found. I chose NOT to delete my boot or kernel caches, so I can't say about that. But I think you got it, old man! Respect. (Version 1.9.6b4)

PATRICK CHAMELO Since your Dock didn't popup again is not Dock Spaces fault but your launchd that didn't bring it back to life... Dock Spaces - is killing the Dock launchd daemon - brings it back If you tried to change dock without the dock to be there, it was probably what cause the problem... Sorry for the trouble and thanks for your feedback (Version 1.20)

MACGURL I love this app. Some things are not right yet, though. Considering the fast and furious pace of OSX updates, this is understandable. To the point: I ran usual cron scripts; then I ran Update LS Database. Bad idea. Process ran, finder quit, would not restart. No finder. So I did a manual power shutdown because you can't force quit anything without a finder (at least I don't know how) and I did reboot finally after 5 very nervous minutes. Prefs are messed up, and everything is slow to launch, but no loss of data as far as I can tell. I don't know if this will happen to someone else. But, for now, I can't personally rate the app. I'll wait a while. I CAN say this- the Alaska nights in winter must be a bummer - the interface is a bit depressing. Please use progress bars instead of barber poles... or, like MainMenu or TinkerTool System, open a log window so the user can see what's being done. A lot of us terminal geeks (and I use the word terminal in both senses) just stare at our screens while these apps run. I can also say that I think I spend entirely too much time worrying about maintenance apps! Carry on! Excalibur! (Version 4.0.12)

MACGURL I have a question. I like LCC and the new version seems OK so far. I'll give my rating when I have tried out all the functions on 10.5.4. The makers of LCC seem right on top of the update game, and they are obviously doing a pretty good job of it. To the point: Under the "MAINTAIN" menu, there's a new (?) option called "Repair Home Folder ACL". Wow am I scared of ACL's! When I used OSX's Disk Utility to repair permissions after the install of 10.5.4, I noticed there was a new ACL, on my application folder. I tried all my apps and everything seems to work so far. So my question is two-fold: a) Should I worry about the ACL on my Apps folder, and b) should I run the "Repair Home Folder ACL" ? Thanks to anyone who can answer this. (Version 4.0.12)

TinkerTool System | Jun 9 2008 |
MACGURL I love TinkerTool System and think it's great for cleaning up my system and running the scripts. I still use Disk Utility in 10.5.3. The only thing, could you check this out, please? In my system, the CUPS won't delete (I use an HP printer) and the app says there are no logs there, but there are, I just can't find them manually. There is a list of like 300 old jobs in that file when I use my print utility to check it. Otherwise, this is nitpicking. Great app, and a great interface. I am avoiding those ACLs though! Thanks, Doc. (Version 1.85)

MACGURL Seems like the last poster is right, at least on my machine - it DID hang on permissions for like an hour (takes Disk Utility about 15 minutes) so I think there's an issue there. But it's a great app, worth believing in. All the other commands seem to work, so it's a matter of tracking that bug. Don't despair, Alaska. We need you and we're with you. (Version 4.0.10)

MACGURL I just ran Onyx through the paces for several days and it seems stable and solid on my system running 10.5.2. No hangs or moments of panic. It's a power tool, no doubt about it. And the documentation is coming along great. The help files really are helpful. If you need help with the English, send me the text and I'll clean it up for you when I get time. Applause! MACGURL LCC has matured over the past year, but the Leopard OS obviously threw a few curves to developers of system maintenance utilities. LCC 4.0.4 has met the challenges and runs cleaner, faster, and with more stability than ever. This is one case where you should read the extensive manual, because there's a larger feature-set than meets the eye at first. Thanks, Alaska! (Version 4.0.4)

MACGURL It doesn't seem to me that "repair permissions" is working in 4.0.2. It hung for 45 minutes, barber pole spinning all the while. I know I should never do this, but I force-quit LCC in the middle of the hang. I repaired permissions in Apple's Disk Utility and, fortunately, permission repair was fine and took about 3 or 4 minutes. I used Clix too -I'm scared of Clix, and the guy that compiled it scares me too- but it seemed to help, and everything is fine again. I'm on Leopard, 10.5.1. My Mac is a G5 dual 2 GHz w/ 1.5 GB of DDR SDRAM. I like LLC because of the added features but would like to see the app give more info to the user, like MainMenu (did) and Onyx does. I'm waiting for Onyx and appreciate Joel taking his time with it. LLC is a good app and can be great. It has some GUI problems and seems pretty slow. Is that just me? (Version 4.0.2)

MACGURL This app can't get much better. It does its job and has never let me down, from cleaning caches to optimizing system performance, all safely. Unlike TCC, I can walk away for a few minutes and the app will restart for me, and I'll hear the start-up chime...that beautiful F major chord...it IS F major, isn't it? And I wonder how many Onyx users customize their version. When I'm done with my customization, which includes changing the app's icon to #4 and deleting all of the others, plus deleting all the unused .lproj files, plus deleting the 3 variations of control icons, the app goes from weighing in at 17.9 Mb down to a mere 1.5 Mb. What a great app. It should ship with every Mac, and Joel should be working for Apple if he isn't already. Thank you, Joel. You are gifted and generous. Five stars as usual. (Version 1.8.3)

PERSON1229 I can't believe how dumb some people really are. Reading other reviews from versions PRIOR TO 1.0! and then writing their own WITHOUT trying the software? You can't even download the versions that did that anymore! And it's not /Library/Receipts for the last time, it _was_ ~/Library/Receipts which is in fact, perfectly safe to remove. I can almost guarantee I've been using Mac longer than you, MacGurl so please don't question my knowledge of how things work. (Version 1.41)

DNELSON "I can't believe how dumb some people really are. Reading other reviews from versions PRIOR TO 1.0! and then writing their own WITHOUT trying the software?" Yeah, really. Who could be so inconsiderate to not even try the application, see someone else's review, and say it's bad yourself, when you haven't even used it. Even though we had a few disagreements early, I do not doubt that person1229 has more experience than you, and I'm sure he wouldn't write something that would destroy your computer. MACGURL Joel really should be working for Apple, and Onyx should be THE app of choice for the maintenance scripts. No other app does such a good job with such stability and user configurability. Another (paid) app asks for my admin password at least 5 times every time I use it. Still another cleans some files out, but not completely. Ask it to delete browser caches and history and it ... doesn't. Only Onyx has been a consistent winner on all fronts. The support is great, the interface polished, the functionality superior, and the interface intuitive and customizable. FIVE STARS for Joel Barierre, Titanium Software, and Onyx. (Version 1.8.1)

Your work is so much appreciated by so many of us. I hope this is just an issue for me alone, but the beta 3 version breaks on 10.4.10 (G5, PPC) - it just freezes at startup, as does Maintenance. Good luck getting the code straight. When your app gets listed on apple.com, even if it's a beta, you know you're doing something right. We all wish you the best! (Version 1.8.1b3)
