TiVo Butler
Oct 30 2009

LYLEHM  Finally figured this out on my own. When "Library" is selected, Tivo Butler only shows 128 items. Clicking in the empty space below the folder listing displays all of my 453 recordings. The balance of my shows turned out to be "hiding" in the "Deleted Shows" folder. On the Tivo, they are not in the Deleted repository.

PyMetaGetter
Oct 30 2009

LYLEHM  The installer stuck PyMetaGetter inside of another application!

From logs:

installd[4940]: Applications/PyMetaGetter.app relocated to Applications/AdManagerPro/AMPARReports.app

installd[4940]: ./postflight: execution error: Can’t make file "OCZSOLID60:Applications:PyMetaGetter.app" into type alias. (-1700)

installd[4940]: PackageKit: Registered bundle file://localhost/Applications/AdManagerPro/AMPARReports.app/

Scary!

I eliminated all the installed files and hope to try again some day if the app is ever updated.

DNS Enabler

LYLEHM  DNS Enabler looks more robust than Leopard Server's standard DNS. The developer's site doesn't mention if DNS Enabler is compatible/recommended for deployment on Leopard Server. Has anyone done this?

Thanks!

TiVo Butler

LYLEHM  TiVo Butler is only showing the last 3 months of recordings. Is there any way to get it to see all the recorded programs?

Thanks!

LYLEHM  Freeware that is well worth a donation. If you need to know what files are being accessed on your system (helpful for so many things) in an easy to use, attractive interface, this is the best I've seen.

Please consider the value you receive and take the time to donate. Developers of such useful apps must be enticed to continue their efforts to all our benefit.

To the fellow that was confused by the toolbar buttons...

Hover your mouse over the button for a popup. You can also right-click and select "Customize Toolbar." There you can either identify all the buttons, customize their arrangement, or permanently add text labels.

MBBench
Jul 11 2009
*****

LYLEHM  Sometimes the best way to verify that a storage device or network connection is working properly is to just copy something and observe.

MBBench provides valuable feedback in a clean and easy to read graph. It's amazing that this is free. The author accepts donations. Fabio, If you still have time to develop this, please chime in to encourage donations - it has been a few years since an update. I know I should be sending you a couple of bucks for the value I've received from this.

Some suggestions: Devices list is limited to 9 items. With my internal flash reader, BD drive, and USB media, I only have a spot for one of 5 SATA hard drives. Instead of a pull down list, perhaps a checkbox list that can display all media. An option to hide mechanisms that do not have media wouldn't hurt.

Actual drive benching tools would be a cool addition as well (like AJA System Test or XBench).

VLC Media Player

LYLEHM  When Quicktime fails you, VLC almost always comes to the rescue. A must have. More options than most people ever think of...

S/PDIF support, Dolby Surround, headphone surround simulation, subtitle support, user definable hotkeys, a wizard for streaming and transcoding (of streamed data), and much more.

Software update feature of 1.0RC3 didn't alert of 1.0 release (could have been intentional). Add another vote to bid a fond farewell to the traffic cone.

Adobe Reader
Jun 24 2009

LYLEHM  Recent versions of Safari have removed "Page Setup" from the "File" menu. Options like "Paper Size" are now incorporated into the main page of the "Print" dialog box.

When a PDF opens in Safari using the Adobe plug-in, the Safari print dialog is superseded by the Adobe Reader dialog. This eliminates the ability to change paper size!

If you want to be able to use other paper sizes, and still want to have your PDFs open in Adobe Reader vs. Preview (and it's Safari plug-in), just take the following steps:

1. Remove the file /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/AdobePDFViewer.plugin

(this can also be done in Adobe Reader: File:Preferences:Internet:Display PDF in browser OFF)

2. In Terminal.app (as the correct user): defaults write -app Safari WebKitOmitPDFSupport -bool Yes

3. In the Finder, select any PDF file and "Get Info" from the "File" menu.

4. Under "Open with" select Adobe Reader.app and click "Change All.."

PDFs will now download to your default download folder and automatically open (depending on security settings) in Adobe Reader.

EV Nova
Jun 22 2009

LYLEHM  Version 1.1 is on their website:

http://www.ambrosiasw.com/games/evn/

It's a universal binary .app package. Note that the "Nova Files" folder is now embedded within the app.

It's amazing to see someone at Ambrosia put some time into EV Nova so many years after its release. Thanks for the effort, guys. If you ever change your minds about reviving the EV "franchise," I have little doubt there will be a following.

Retrospect
Mar 25 2009

LYLEHM  I've only just recently installed 8.0.594. Ultimately, I'll test this will multiple Mac and Win servers backing up to a 9TB FC-RAID. I'm just so impressed by the new GUI, I wanted to mention it now instead of waiting for the test results.

EMC waited quite a while do anything with Retrospect Mac after it was purchased from Dantz. However, once the public beta started, the speed of bug fix releases was spritely. From that pace, and the lively interactions on the EMC beta forum, it's apparent they are taking this product seriously. I'm cautiously optimistic and look forward to posting some real world results.

TwonkyMedia Server
Feb 19 2008
****.

LYLEHM  Twonky allows my OS X Mac to stream a variety of media types to both my Playstation3 and my Denon AVR-3808ci. I can specify any media directory, including my iTunes library. A web client allows for streaming to other computers and now, web enabled portable devices. Download the fully functional 30 day trial and see for yourself. Well worth the price.

Installation and configuration is relatively easy. Knowing that that default port is 9000 can help with that.

The previous version, 4.4.2 installed in /Library/StartupItems/MediaServer and /usr/local/mediaserver. Version 4.4.4 changes this and installs in /Applications (show package contents on the app to see the guts and .ini file). However, the current package installer warns of a newer version on my system and then fails the installation. Dragging the installer to unpkg (also available on MacUpdate), easily extracts the application for a manual install. Make sure you terminate any previous version and remove it before running the new app. Save your old ini file so you can copy settings and your registration number.

Parallels Desktop
Dec 29 2006
*****

LYLEHM  I've been impressed with Parallels from its early release. But, with these most recent betas I can say I'm actually thrilled over a piece of software. The reason for my excitement is Coherence Mode. With integration on par with Apple's fading "Classic Compatibility Environment," Coherence gives you your Windows apps while maintaining most of the beauty of your Aqua world.

From a performance standpoint, I played a 720p Quicktime movie in Windows XP on my MacBook Pro 1.83 with no dropped frames. Perhaps, I might even play a game some day.

The development pace at Parallels must be feverish as this product rapidly evolves with fixes and new features. My original purchase price continues to grow in value as there has been no 'upgrade' cost to date.

If you need to run Windows, *NIX, or any other supported OS on your Intel Mac, Parallels is an excellent value. Of course, you should download the demo first to make sure it does everything you want - it likely will.
