LUMPO  Agree with all the sentiments above (I spend time coding elsewhere and I didn't want to do it for the web). Very nice designs possible

LUMPO  Does the Mac version now allow building standalones for Mac AND windows or do you still have to buy /upgrade both versions to do that?

We stopped using it because it became a monster of money grabbing over function (now use Revolution), but I have to convert some old files from v9 to a newer version of win and Mac.

Any insights here appreciated (needless to say the local rep didn't have a clue).

DAVE_MAC_BOY  Yes, you can build standalone Mac and PC projectors with Director 11.5 (from Director 10+ as well!!)

I haven't used this version (apart from a small 15 trial), but believe there is a future for this app. The integrated video playback is real much needed. It's also a great when used in combination with flash.

LUMPO  I was sitting in a clinic today using my iphone to calculate each patient's BMI with the calculator. slow.... I thought $2.50 is a cup of coffee and will be easier. It works quickly as one might expect and is great for the hybrid culture that knows their weight in Kg but for some reason still does their height in inches.

Good little medical doo dad

Nisus Writer Express

LUMPO  I had a meltdown with M$ Word on a Macbook and I just can't get it to run (bound to be font corruption, but alas can't fix it). I have Mellel which is quite nice but it doesn't work smoothly in terms of importing the lingua frnca (M$ word files). Nisus however, opens word files as though they were native, and saves them out the same way without complicated exporting.

The only reason I ever need M$ word is when I am receiving or am required to track changes. For those occasions I open Word in windoze under parallels (runs 1000% faster than word in OSX ever did). Shuddering with relief when that's done, I return to Nisus and it does most of what i want easily.

For bibliographic databases, I use Bookends. You can set it to drop references into the Nisus doc and as the default format is rtf, Bookends can scan it quickly to make a formatted doc and bibliography; this is a 2 step process whereas Mellel is 1-step.

Still if Word compatability is needed, Nisus has it over Mellel ++; otherwise they both have something to offer.
