LUKE_ARMSTRONG  I didn't realise how much I hated the tabs on top until I installed Safari 4 and was reminded how much more convenient and logical it was to have them below the tool bar (no more inadvertent tab closing by clicking the wrong end, no more problems dragging windows, etc.).

Glims works beautifully and is indispensable in enabling Safari to compete with Firefox by offering selectable search engines and other benefits.

The only thing I miss is the Safari 3 progress bar... it must be possible to reinstate it - you can even download a plug-in for Firefox that emulates it!

LUKE_ARMSTRONG  Thanks Graham,

I appreciate your comments, but there really can be no excuse for the Safari developers not implementing a multiple search engine option. If a student in Chicago can do it in his spare time (acidsearch) why can't they? The answer, I believe, is that they can, but they are working in a control freak culture and have a cosy deal with Google.

I have tried the webkit engine as you have suggested, while it feels super fast, it, too, is also 'undeveloped' (i.e. in a state of daily development) and might, itself, not be truly secure? Not sure about having to update every few days either...

I am going to have to re-load Safari 3.2 now because several websites will no longer interact with 3.1 (PayPal for instance). But, unless I can find a way around the multiple search engine handicap I might have to defect to Firefox.

LUKE_ARMSTRONG  I cannot overstate the impact of this little program on Safari. With AcidSearch Safari becomes the best browser by far. I then had to remove it to prevent 3.2 from crashing continually and, without it, the crippling inconvenience caused by Apples greedy exclusivity deal with Google, renders Safari a hobbled parady of what it ought to be.

Come on Steve Jobs! How about putting the user before profits and incorporating multiple search engine options. It's how it should have been from the start.

I, for one, have reinstalled 3.1 with AcidSearch again. If this ever fails, I'll be switching to Firefox before resorting to Safari 3.2 or its emasculated successors.

HOLYPOLY  Version 0.70b4 does crash Safari 3.2, indeed. However, the older beta 3 does not.

Safari 3.2.1 as well as the WebKit nightlies run fine with 0.70b3 under both Tiger and Leopard, I found.

A downgrade of well-developed Safari, for compatibility with an un-developed product, is not a recommended approach. Are you confident that your persistence with a downgraded product combination will allow you to receive all critical security updates?

You can use another product that places multiple user-configurable engines in the search menu. I do so.

WebKit is open source

http://webkit.org/ and there's nothing to prevent us from contributing or improving code. The 'greedy exclusivity' description does not fairly reflect the open nature of the software.
