LONDONSKATER  Hmm, nice to know it hasn't been neglected, interface only mildly improved. Versions still way ahead but nice to have the free GUI here.

Scrivener

LONDONSKATER  This is a swiss army knife for serious writing. But, this isn't an application to try out for an afternoon and then discard. You'll be doing both the app and yourself a disservice.

I use Scrivener for two things: contributing write-ups for a online magazine, and writing academic papers for my MA.

The write-ups are short, but require lots of info and shuffling around, while the academic essays are obviously longer, require references and the like. All these papers are output through LaTEX, anyhow, so I require a program that works well with LaTEX.

Scrivener does compile the draft out to LaTEX, but I've not found it particularly good, and as I keep my references in Scrivener as actual BibTEX/LaTEX markup, the compile tends to mess these up. Scrivener does open BibDesk up so I copy references straight in, so that's fantastic.

If I had any time to spend with the LaTEX templates in Scrivener, I could probably figure out how to make it all work. I'll bet it can be done.

The whole process of writing is different to what one might expect from Microsoft Word or the like, and one should follow the tutorial videos to understand how the folder/editor/notes system works, and then how best to make it all work for you.

The developer and the community are excellent, the app has never once crashed on me and it's a veritable bargain.

LONDONSKATER  An excellent product, meant for serious use. I bought Delicious Library years ago and never touch it. It's a toy application. I love the long list of search libraries, the Z39.50 servers and the export to Bibtex!

I can actually use this application for bibliographies with a very high level of accuracy. Brilliant!

LONDONSKATER  The best of all the main Subversion GUIs out there, so far.

SVNx is handy but the interface is retarded.

Cornerstone is beautiful but has a massive overhead of clicks and actions to get where you need to.

LONDONSKATER  This is a pretty good product. My biggest issue is that I am unable to configure it to output with xetex, which is essential on OS X to use the OS X fonts. It would be great to have as an option in the prefs. Currently I edit with TeXMaker and output with TeXShop.

MKLJUN  XeTeX and TexMaker DO work together.

Texmaker -> Preferences

Under Commands use:

Latex: /usr/texbin/xelatex -output-driver=/usr/texbin/xdv2pdf %.tex

Under Quick Build use:

User: /usr/texbin/xelatex -output-driver=/usr/texbin/xdv2pdf %.tex|open %.pdf

LONDONSKATER  I've used this for a few years now, and it just isn't stable. On any computer. When it works, the output is excellent, very pretty and the features in the HTML are great. But throw a large number of classes at it, and it crashes.

Just try documenting a large library, to get prettier docs, and it crashes. Try it again, it crashes. This has been for every version I've used.

The interface is slightly clunky with quirks galore. I would much prefer this to be a wrapper around ASDOC or AS2API with the pretty HTML.

LONDONSKATER  This is a pretty good product, especially compared to the alternatives.

The interface is steadfastly drag-and-drop, so that importing, exporting and checking out are all slick.

My only gripe lies in with the working copy browser, listing which files are in need of updating, or have changed, etc.

This area of the GUI is fairly arcane and slightly annoying to use - could be better designed, although I appreciate that it must be a difficult concept to turn into a GUI anyway.
